So I was replaying the game for the n-th time the other day ('cause - you know - I hate it that much ;)
and a couple of things I'd been hearing over and over fell into a new place.

Harbringer keeps insisting that the Reapers are '[humanity's] salvation through destruction';
Sovereign says they are 'each of them a nation' (implying, in my mind, every Reaper being made
up of the individuals that they, uh, blendered during construction). And then Garrus says something
to the extent of implying that - hey - there might be something worse in store than Collectors or Reapers...

So my theory for ME3 is that (drumroll) Reapers aren't evil! Nope - they just (forcefully) preserve
civilizations within themselves to save them from a greater threat. I mean - if you stop to think about it -
they don't kill anyone to make a new Reaper- Just, uh, change their consistency, really =)

...

I'm willing to bet that the reason for this weird cycle will be the main antagonist of the final part of the
trilogy, though what's worse than a fleet of genocidal robot-ships is beyond me (right now I'm betting
on an armada of Space Hamsters bent on freeing Boo from his aquarium-prison ;)

My two cents.

Cheers,

Pete

OP is not far fetched in his speculation for there will or should be a major plot twist in the thrid installment of a trilogy makes something we belive now, invalide. Wether this is worthy of being the plot twist is another issue.

They could rescue cultur and knowlegde of civilisations before they destroy themselves in war.
This is the only possibility for them to be good.

Some whales in the ocean feed off of tons of small fish on an annual basis.  That doesn't make them evil, just their method of survival.  Organics have a right to survive also though.  So we will see who wins.

I never said that the Reapers were justified in what they did: only that what they did may be - from

their perspective - necessary to preserve civilizations from extinction...

Yeah - maybe my post title was a bit misleading, but I'm not arguing morality here =) Reapers - bad.

As for what they're 'saving' civilizations from, I'm thinking it has to do with all that 'dark energy /

stars dying prematurely' stuff that you hear from Parassini and Tali...

It may be from THEIR perspective necessary for THEIR survival.

Johnny$- You keep coming back to the good/bad aspect; I'm thinking more along the lines of
the Reapers not being at the top of the food-chain.

And in terms of your whale analogy (very nice, by the by): whales act on instinct - not reason;
I mean - far be it for me to speculate just how smart they are - but I'm fairly sure they just go
'hungry; kril; NOM' =)

If you have the mental capacity to differentiate between good (oh look - another life-form) and
bad (oh look - blender-fodder) and do the bad thing ANYWAY- Well - that's evil in my book.

...

But getting back on track - what do you guys think COULD be worse than Reapers?

Barring natural disaster (such as, um, galaxy-wide supernova re-write, 'cause then the
relays and the citadel would cease to exist).

Well, if the reapers think they are the pinacle of "life" "evolution" they might think using creatures to creat more reapers is the ultimate sacrifice another being can do... But then, Hitler tought killing jews was for the greater good. Only cos they think that dont make it so.

The universe is a huge place... while I can't say that there is a more powerful and nefarious force than the Reapers, the universe is a huge huge place. Less than 1% of the Milky Way has been explored by the species of the current cycle! To say that there is no force greater than the Reapers is not logical. Whether they are nefarious or even interested in the Milky Way is another story.

Now I want to analyze a few ideas that would be supportive of an external force. Sovereign mentions how Reapers are the pinnacle of evolution. Let's think for a second... what is evolution? It is adaptation to conditions such that survival improves and the genes are passed on. Evolution as we understand it does not normally occur in steady environments... IE without selection pressures there is little to no adaptation.

If the Reapers have no greater threat and are not intelligent enough to foresee future threats, then there is no need for their evolution. What I'm saying is that I would be very surprised if there was not some greater reason that the Reapers continually seek to farm the Milky Way for greater resources.

Miqti- I know that saying this doesn't promote dialogue, but - ditto =)
Well thought out argument you got there...

But - again - what (aside from natural decay and recurring disasters) would
threaten flying city-states like the Reapers? Oh - and I got dibs on the impending
arrival of the Space Hamster armada...

Imagine an intergalactic empire more nefarious than the Reapers... huge ships that block the views of whole star fields from a starship window. Black ships with red markings. The Reapers are benign in comparison, being clean and methodical. The goal of this entity is to spread among all stars and dominate all aspects of life.

The Reapers provide technology for what becomes a giant garden. This new species is far more sinister, turning worlds into burning chasms and enslaving people to do their bidding and build their ships. The Reapers were relatively nice... for example forming the Protheans into mindless husks.

Imagine if we defeat the Reapers, that EDI gains more information from them... informing the crew about data that the Reapers have collected on other galaxies... and they were aware of more powerful species. Maybe we have their attention, maybe not... but as dangerous as the Reapers are, there is much worse awaiting us in the universe.
