                                                                Part 1: Origin and reproduction
As concluded to before on many posts in this forum, the reapers were probably once an organic sentient species. This species kept improving themselves via genetic engineering and technological assimilation.  The reapers are the result of that advancement, the pinnacle if evolution as sovereign states.  An organic/synthetic construct free of the weaknesses of normal organic and synthetic constructs.  Omnipotent beings achieved from the perfect melding process of biology and machinery.  Each reaper containing the memories and thought processes of millions of individuals as well as millions of advanced A.I. programs.  Linked to perhaps millions of other reapers, all sharing data at FTL speed.  Add to that the indoctrination capabilities and the advanced technology and weaponry and you have most fiercesome and prolific force the galaxy has ever witnessed.  To say their intimidating would be a monumental understatement.
                                                                Part 2: The extinction cycle

The reapers plan stems from their conclusion that continued self preservation can only be attained through conservation of natural resources.  It all has to do with Newton's first law of thermodynamics, energy cannot be created nor destroyed only change forms.  In other words all constructs whether organic or synthetic need energy in order to function.  The reapers themselves would not be able to exist without the finite resources (eezo, metals, conductors, organic materials, etc.) they use for construction, repair, movement, and every other activity.  The reapers come to the realization that the only way to live for eternity is to run in some kind of low functioning mode while periodically returning to normal function in order to gather the necessary resources to continue their existence.  The only remaining obstacle is in dealing with other organic species that rise to sentience and consume resources that the reapers are dependent on.  The logical conclusion is to eliminate all future sentient species.  This lead the reapers to devise the most ingenious and diabolical plan ever conceived.  They would implement a type of control on organic evolution, as sovereign said, the mass relays ensure that you develop along the path we desire.  So the reapers build the citadel and mass relays to make the elimination process less difficult.  Then head out to dark space to wait for the entrusted sleeper agent to signal the keepers to activate the citadel relay.  As an added bonus they consume all the sentient species, creating more reapers and gaining the collective data of that species.  The final result is Eons worth of knowledge and millions of unique reapers.

While it may be a very complex and elaborate plan, it was formed using simple machine like logic.

Personally I am hoping for something more fantastical, but I guess I'll have to wait and find out.

Opinions?

This does seem to be the case. But there are plenty of other mysteries to be solved in ME3. Looking forward.

edit: oh cr*p, didn't see the date there. Well, here's a link to the other thread. Perhaps better to continue the discussion there?

I could offer another try: Reapers lack the creative spark to come up with new technology.

So they employ the chaotic minds of organic life to come up with new innovative uses and development leaps. They seeded the galaxy with mass portals in order for the Tech that gets created during the cycle will be compatible to their systems, but they keep a watch that makes sure the Organics don't just grow to powerful to be wiped out so the next cycle can start.

This galaxy is the chalkboard that all organic life scribbles its ideas on. The Reapers watch, take notes, then wipe it clean and call in the next class.
