This was my Warden's original plan: have Anora and Alistair marry for the good of Fereldan, and spare Loghain so that he may redeem his honour by slaying the Archdemon; I would not undergo the Dark Ritual, since my Warden wants to stop the Blight for good and fears that sparing the Old God's soul would only cause an extra Blight.

I thought that I had hardened Alistair, but apparently I didn't and now Alistair refuses to marry Anora and spare Loghain as well. What do you think I should do? Go with the original plan, but have Alistair leave in a hissy-fit? Have them marry but undergo the Dark Ritual to spare us both, despite my reservations? Should I kill Loghain and let Alistair take the final blow?

If Alistair kills Loghain, Anora refuses to marry him.

I originally wanted Harden Alistair to marry Anora and spare Loghain as well as do the Ritual but then decided that I didn't want to have to put up with such a whiny, **** Alistair in Awakening. Loghain's expected to die at the Landsmeet so just do him in.

The thing is that I actually LIKE Alistair...

Well then if you spare Loghain, he annuls your friendship because he didn't get his way.

Personally, my PCs agree with Alistair and want Loghain dead. They also agree with him that Anora is too much like her father to be trusted. I think that might be in the hardened dialogue, so you may not have heard it....

Anyway, it's your game to play as you wish, but I'd go back and make sure Alistair is hardened, replay up to Landsmeet and make Alistair king by himself. He doesn't need Anora, and I like him too much to force that little match made in hell.... Of course, you'll have to kill Loghain. ;)

Do you have a save before the landsmeet? You may be able to harden Alistair if you speak to him at camp.

Dragon Age can be played multiple times so if you don't get the result you wanted this time, try for it next time. As for this playthrough, you can keep Anora on the throne, have Alistair executed (don't throw cabbages at me, rabid Alistair fans!) or spared (though he wanders off to be a drunk somewhere - not really a happy ending for him), or you can execute Loghain yourself and Alistair will marry Anora (just be prepared for a brutal cut-scene. I got that on my first playthrough and...never again).

Just a thought - did you speak to Riordan at Arl Eamon's estate, and have him give you the location of the Warden cache in the warehouse? Duncan's shield is there and gives Alistair a significant approval bump which may just help you get him, er, hard. *chortle*

you can only harded him after he has seen his sister right outside her house, but when you get back to camp and he talks to you about what you said becareful of your answer or you could make him a softy again.

Yes he's done that - he just hasn't had the follow-up convo where Alistair says he's going to start sticking up for himself.

can you do the follow-up at Eamons estate or only at your camp?

You can talk to your companions there, sure. But you can get the "thanks for toughening me up" speech anywhere. I got it really late in one game due to having annoyed Alistair at some point - I had to give him the shield to get the approval high enough to trigger it. So yes it's possible to have that conversation with him once you're in Denerim.

I'm pretty sure that I messed up the hardening overall, so I'm quite sure the original plan is completely out of order.

My character's overall ideals:
- holds to Duncan's "we must stop the Blight" / "In death, sacrifice" ideals
- is good friends with Alistair and likes him
- believes an Alistair/Anora union is best for Fereldan
- thinks Loghain's honour can still be salvaged

Based on those, what seems like the best course of action?
1) Spare Loghain, have a fallout with Alistair*, and have Loghain take the final blow.
2) Kill Loghain, have Alistair and Anora marry, and begrudgingly do the Dark Ritual.
3) Execute Loghain, let Anora rule alone, and have Alistair to take the final blow.

*Granted, this could make for a decent fic... a falling-out debate between my Warden and Alistair over who honours Duncan more: my Warden for holding to his ideals or Alistair for clinging to his honour. A "Part 2" could be a scene with Morrigan, also the Warden's friend, and their falling out over the Dark Ritual. Concluding all this could be an epilogue where Leliana, my love interest, tries to comfort me before the final battle; all the Warden can wonder, though, if even she will abandon him in time...

What happens to Alistar in Awakenings if you spared Loghain at the landsmeet, but had the redeemer ending (where Loghain takes the final blow)?

Is he still all pissy over it, or does he get over himself?

*headdesk* Crisis averted. I loaded up to right before the Landsmeet and spoke with Alistair. "You know, I've been thinking..." Problem solved.

Still, might go through with that fic idea...
