Guess I'll be picking up that revenant.. I was undecided between that or a sniper, but I guess this makes my mind up.

What about snipers and shotguns?
All the weapons I tested now can be effectively used in the same way, as shown in the videos. But shotguns are not efficient at that range, you'd have to be at point blank range. Neither are sniper rifles: you don't look down a scope at a target 3 meters in front of you. So I think there's not much to be gained by doing the same tests for those weapons as for the others.
On the other hand, if I did a new series of tests at near point blank range, I'd expect to see a similar hierarchy to the one that was found in these tests, but I could include shotguns as well. However, it would be difficult to make any reliable judgments about the comparisons of shotguns with other weapons, since shotguns don't fire continuously.
Also, a long-range damage test to compare sniper rifles to other weapons wouldn't be very useful, since the other weapons are not efficient at long range. You miss alot. It makes more sense to get up close with the other weapons (if possible), whereas it doesn't make any sense to get up close with sniper rifles.
I suppose that instead of comparing shotguns or sniper rifles to other weapons, it might be worth it to compare them against other shotguns or other sniper rifles. However, this thread is about this particular experiment, and this experiment doesn't really apply to shotguns or sniper rifles.

nice work on the videos, thanks. i assume further differentiation becomes apparent with upgrades to damage/accuracy though?
Thanks. Yes, pure damage upgrades would have some effect, considering that some of the weapons tested might benefit from not having to reload as often. For instance, where you previously had to reload once before the shields are down, now you only have to reload after the shields are down. Maybe I'll do a test with max damage upgrades just to see what happens.
The SMG Shield piercing upgrade (+50% damage) would make Tempest the champion of taking down shields at that range, when the Assault rifles had their Penetration upgrade (+25% damage) as well.
Tempest's 500 shield damage in 2.7 sec should go down to 2.7/1.50 = about 1.8 sec.
Vindicator's 500 shield damage in 2.4 sec should go down to 2.4/1.25 = about 1.9 sec.
So Tempest would win that. But the Vindicator would still do faster health damage.
The effect of the Heavy Pistol Critical upgrade would be a bit unpredictable, since the effect is a chance of critical per shot and you'd have to have a large sample size (of shots) to accurately compare its effect to not having the upgrade.

I made a new video comparing the anti-armor capabilities of Carnifex and Tempest against Harbringer at close range. Probably only confirms what most people already know - but if you think the Tempest is a good gun against armor, you're wrong:

Also, the Collector Rifle has better strategic options. At long distances, it's better than the Avenger, due to it's consistent accuracy. I'd say, at the least, start with it over the Avenger, then when you get the Vindicator, you are free to decide.
SMGs. Never used SMGs much. I only used them once--on my first Hardcore playthrough as an Adept. Bad call. Biotics are useless, so I quit before I even got to Horizon and started another, more successful run as a soldier.

When you research the Accuracy Improvement upgrade for Assault Rifles, when you shoot around/over cover, the Collector Assault rifle has pinpoint accuracy. As in, the accuracy of a sniper. I wouldn't recommend it for Hardcore/Insanity, however. It's accuracy superiority does not compensate for its little potency.
