This question just popped into my head today. Videogames/Movies hardly ever seem to use another branch of the military for this genre.

It's because space ships are often related to navy ships in Science Fiction... It's just something everyone picked up on. Little odd considering you need aerospace engineering to get there in the first place... Hence I would really prefer it if they went for a more 'air force' themed branch in SciFi... but hey.

Americans, I'd suspect.

Seems to be a very "American" thing to me.

Because "Space Marine" sounds cooler than "Space Trooper".

Americans make a lot of science fiction stuff. Marines are a branch of the American Navy. Navies have ships. Spaceship has the word "ship" in it, which means it must be a naval vessel. Therefore, Space Marines.

That is almost flawless logic...

Because the modern day role of amphibious assault is a pretty good parallel to the ship based warfare depicted in many sci-fi games/films.

That and depending on the country they can be viewed as something of an elite group (Royal Marines have a commando brigade).

It's because after how badass the space marines were from Aliens, they've kind of set a standard.

1. Because American Marines are ****ing awesome.

2. Because the act of transitioning from space to a planetary invasion is very similar to that of an amphibious attack. Same goes to the act of defending a ship from another ship.

Because it makes sense.

Also just about any military with a navy has marines.

It's because of Starship Trooper popularized the idea. It also popularized the idea of power armor.

Most sci-fi is really based on ideas popularized by a few series in the past like Dune, Starship Trooper, Star Trek, Star Wars, and pretty much everything by H.G. Wells, H.P. Lovecraft, John Campbell, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clark.

marines are the first in and last out, they are the front lines where the protagonist always is, space does not change that fact

I'm sure once any US marine reads they will immediately take offense to it.  The USMC is a branch of the US armed forces.  It is it's own entity as the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Navy are.

I would say that although spaceships do fly through the air and in space they are set up more like naval vessels in the way that they are set up to accommodate troops for long periods of time and serve as mobile bases of operations. If you look at how the Marine Corp operates you will see that they are responsible for force projection from the sea which if you look at the way Shepard and his crew operate it is very similar except they do it from space.

The fact of the matter is the closest thing we have to the way we think a crew on on a spaceship should operate is the Marine Corp and thus we call them Marines.

Hardly. The novel "Starship Troopers" was released in 1959, so was 27 years before Aliens was released and 20 years before Alien was released.
And Lovecraft probably, from what I've read and understood, was more inspirational in the themes of Sci-Fi novels and other creatures than he was in any "futuristic military" way. I just can't see him writing about a corps of troops in space.

I think it's because the Marines seem to combine attributes of all three of the other services (Army, Navy, Air Force) into a single service which makes them more flexible so they can more easily handle any situation that they may face.
