Who out there play the game as "purists" i.e. no bonus powers, i tend to prefer this playthrough because i feel like it's more 'true' to the class.
Plus i dont feel like you need any of the bonus powers really.

The only time I use bonus powers is to experiment with them for guides such as my Engineer and Infiltrator guides. Aside from that, I stick to my class powers.

I do.

Certain classes can use bonus powers effectively, but for others, it gets in the way of their strengths.

Yep, I play that way as well. 1 step further even, if I'm playing a non combat class (sentinel/engineer/adept) I try to avoid using the advanced weapon training.

Idk how i feel about that, i feel like even if im a Sentinel or an Adept or Engineer if im shooting my Tempest or Canon enough id get better at it so i feel it flows with the RP status of the class.

Just realized you meant Shotgun/AR/Sniper, nvm haha.

Oh I use those weapons, heck, if you've seen my Sentinel Videos, you'll see I spray the hell outta targets with the smg :).  I'm referring to the advanced weapon training you receive on the collector ship.

Yeah i caught on to that after i posted it.

I took a Sniper on my Sent so that really is like way off the RP of it, i think an AR is more inline if you had to take one of the weapons.

Not using any bonus powers is a bit too extreme. I recommend just avoiding biotic bonus powers if you're not biotic and avoiding advanced tech powers if you have no tech skills. You should also probably avoid Dominate unless you're an Ardat-Yakshi.

If you want to keep it even more 'pure' then don't do any skill resets the entire game as well.

Actually I do the same thing, I take the Viper to make a few of the more distant fights easier, but I generally only use it for those few situations (namely praetorians and Mr. Terminator)

I stopped ever since Christina posted her video requirements. After that I got to thinking how much it takes away from a class

How is it extreme, its not an ability you started with and on yoru first play through you dont get access to them until like 2/3 of the way through. Plus its not really part of your class, its just playing true to your characters idea.

Not to nock anyone who uses them, i just prefer to not use them, i just wish i had an option to not take a bonus power haha.

If any of the bonus powers were spectacular and I didn't have more important class skills to spend points on, I'd use them more often. Reave doesn't count since it's broken and you could crush the game on insanity using literally nothing but reave. The barrier skills have obscene cooldowns and aren't really that great anyway. You're better off using medi-gel as your "OH S$%T" button once you get the upgrades for it. Energy Drain is actually pretty nice, but again suffers from a long cooldown. Ammo powers can be good on classes that don't have access to them, but you'll most likely be using squad mates that have them so you can put those 10 points to much better use.

Conclusion, bonus powers are a lot of fun to mess around with but are not really practical or necessary.

I did a no bonus power run through and found that I enjoyed the bonus power (reave) run through more. Both were fun though.

Hmm, me and you have very different views of the Vanguard and you're a heavy proponent of Reave and it seams to be a corner stone of your build. I just feel like above all Reave is the cheapest talent.

I agree. I hate Reave

Some bonuses just fit the class, like Barrier on a Vangaurd, Or nueral shock on an infiltrator.

Never, ever, dominate.

They fit because of ME1, and i try to stick true to Developers vision and they saw it wasn't fitting to use Barrier, and im telling you as a tried and true Vanguard, Barrier is not needed, heavy charge = full barrier.

It's a concept a lot of people have trouble getting, but when you're a vanguard and you're about to die you actually charge some more at enemies to save your life.

I always use that charge trick, but why would a vangaurd not have a barrier? A soldier? definatelt not, an engineer? definately not, a sentinal? maybe.

Besides you HAVE to pick one, might as well make it the best fit for your class (lore wise)

How does one go about taking no Bonus Power on the 360? As far as I'm aware, you are required to take a Bonus Power in order to move on with Character Creation.

I am on the PC so I am not sure how it works on the Xbox 360 but I suppose you can always retrain your powers and redistribute the bonus point to another power.

Personally, I use the bonus power but I always keep it within the lore of the class, i.e. as an adept I would only choose a biotic power, as an engineer I would only choose a tech power etc.

I did select a bonus power, but made sure it was in keeping with my infiltrator class. I simply selected another weapon - the battle rifle, to give me some control over enemies at medium range.

That's how I see it as well.

I pick AP Ammo almost every time because it's at the top of the list. Don't use it, then retrain out of it as soon as I get back on the ship from Horizon. I want that extra point!
