After a few playthroughs of ME2 I returned to do ME1 again. I must say that I find the improvments of ME2 to be very welcome and impressive. I did not fully realize how superior the combat system was, and how much better the graphics were, until I replayed ME1.
That being said, ME1 is still a great game, and I must say that I found myself enjoying my elevator rides (the ones on the normandy are excessive though as you are alone with no chatter), and enjoying the ambiance of the Citadel and the Normandy. ME1 is very good at setting a mood for the game visually... very crisp and beautiful... but never too much visually. I find ME2 to be more impressive in every way... but it is kind of like a Hollywood seqel: They have a bigger budget and go for more shoch and awe... brighter colors, more humor, bigger bangs. More impressive, but less realistic in some ways.
ME1 still holds a place in my heart... mainly because I find it has a darker overall feel to it atmospherically. More cold. Background conversations are more bland... but more realistic. The overall tone/mood of ME1 was very well done... even if ME2 is a better game in just about every respect.

me1 was 'darker' because of the lack of detail. so it was literaly a darker game.
me2 had alot more detail, made it feel more alive and bright. ironic that it was supposed to be the dark second act.

ME2 does have a lot of impressive use of lighting. The difference in the normandy lighting for example. I am not sure which ship I like more...
In regards to things being dark... I loved the humor of ME2... but it killed the dark mood.

I agree with you, Throw_this_away.
Another thing I noticed is that the streamlining of Mass Effect 2 really reinforces the notion that you are under someone else's control. In Mass Effect 1 you were your own boss with your own ship and full control over where you went. The ability to land on uncharted worlds and drive around on them greatly reinforced that notion. Now that is gone.
I love Mass Effect 2, but while playing it I do find myself nostalgic for its predecessor at times.

I agree. While ME2 is a superior game, there is something about ME that I just love.

I do like me1 better but get mucked up with the 'E" key vs spacebar, this was ridiculous but then this changing of keys is a trademark.
Other thing is you spend ages on choosing armor and weapons and then are forced to fight over half the game from the mako where all this becomes irrelevant. and so stupid

I think ME1 did deserve #1 in the top 25 Xbox 360 games for sure... back in November 09.

ME1 I liked a bit more, ME2 seemed like half a game to me setting the characters up for ME3, that and i miss the old system of acquired traits. DO something 150 times can bring over to a different character, now your just get your squads abillities, would of loved to have a vangaurd with the sentinels power armor

Meh, while ME was a good game I just can't get into it anymore. The clunky combat system, the crappy MAKO driving and the horrid inventory system just makes the game very hard to play after playing ME2. Is ME2 a perfect game? No, but I found it alot better and one of Biowares best.

Both had great ambiance, though I have to say I miss the barren uncharted worlds from the original game. ME1 also had some great ambient music that ME2 seems to lack in favour of more action and/or suspense themed music. I personally don't think there are many areas in ME2 that compare music wise to the tunes for Feros, Noveria and Ilos in the original game. But then music seemed more location-oriented in the original while ME2 has more situational and character music.
