While wondering why Legion wasn't made available to recruit earlier, I stumbled across this:

I seem to remember that there was originally a full fledged mission in between the SR1 biting the dust and Shepard reawakening, in case anyone has wondered where the extra voice acting comes from. I'm not spoilering anything here since none of it made it into the game and it doesn't actually delve into any late game plot.

You started off as Legion, unfolding from a cargo box that you had sneaked into aboard the Shadowthrone, the Shadow Broker courier frigate with your
body on board. After a few minutes of sneaking, you start hearing gunshots and reports of an intruder over the intercom. Eventually you met Liara, who was on her own mission to steal the corpse. After a heated mexican stand, Liara and Legion teamed up to steal the corpse on agreement that she got to take it where she wanted(Cerberus). Over the course of the mission, you played as Legion and inquired about Shepard's decisions based on your investigations. In this manner, it was originally set up to allow you to customize an ME1 game's choices through your dialogs with Liara.

After a few short gunfights, they were to finally get to Liara's small infiltration ship, but not before having to take of Shepard's armor off order to get him/her into Liara's containment field to keep the body from falling apart. On his way into the ship, Legion was to be shot and disabled as well as given his iconic wound. It was then to shift into first person and you see Liara close the door and launch her small ship from the airlock. A -NO FEED- was to come up on the screen in red and then fade from view, followed by Shepard fading in and out and seeing Miranda. The game then continued as normal until you got to the first missions.

On your way to Omega for the first recruitment, you picked up a distress signal from the Shadowthrone. Miranda was to recognize it as the ship that your corpse had been stolen off of. It's beacon suggested that it had been adrift for nearly two years. Knowing that agent that had bought you from had left the ship functional and suspecting that it had something to do with the disappearances, she suggests boarding the ship to investigate. Once on board, you discover that Legion had reactivated and repaired himself with the armor that had been pulled off of you. He had then hunted down and killed the entire crew but had accidentally caused irreparable damage to its drives. To save energy in the powerless ship, he went into a hibernation mode. You find the hibernating Legion in the engine room and remove him, leaving you with the choice of whether or not to activate him.

In the end it was scrapped because it was seen as too confusing for players new to the series. It was also redundant to have Legion tell his unique story to Liara in the beginning and then to Shepard again less than two gameplay hours later. Additionally, it was seen as too different from ME1 to have the player's first shooting battles be as a Geth against humans. The comics were given an OK instead to fill the gap and some friend for Liara was created to take the place of Legion.

A lot of assets, like Legion's Shepard Armor repair or much of the unused dialog, were left in game with little or no explanation. In the case of the former, it went from causing a long conversation about how he stalked the crew of the Shadowthrone to "No Data Found." Much of the lost dialog, like his lines before he can be acquired, were just left since he would never be there to trigger them. Other dialogs, for instance he had a long dialog with Liara if you brought him to Illium, never even made it off the paper. Most of the assets were retooled though, like the SR2 Cargo bay that was originally Legion's starting point in the mission. The Crashing Ship mission is almost a direct usage of most of the Shadowthrone's assets, complete with the engine room where you were supposed to find him in up where you now turn the engines on.

Additionally, Veetor was a relatively late addition to the game. Originally you met Tali on Freedom's progress and she joined you from there, but that was scrapped for reasons I don't know. Similarly though, many of her lost dialogs were just left in since she would never be there to trigger them without hacking the game.

I don't know where this originated from (probably around here), but from the sounds of it, I really like this opening better. Looks like ME2 may have gotten the KOTOR 2 treatment...

While it sounds nice, this would have caused a ****storm because alot of people would be confuse because all of a suuden we are notp laying Shepard and this is at the start. Many ME fans did not follow ME2 news so they would not be spoiled.

Ah! But Geth do not intentionally infiltrate!

Your thread has been ruined.

We played as joker, which was boring as hell and immersion breaking >_<

honestly a scene for that could have been done instead

Again, the way it was handled was bad, but the scene was needed because through out the whole game you are this big badass while all of a sudden you are playing a man who is sick and all around him his friends are getting captured and killed. As I said, Bioare should have handled it better. Also that part was very short, where this part was going to be alot longer.

Man, this makes me really want to buy ME2 from steam and hack it to have tali and legion with me. Thanks for this op, now I have to decide between ME2 and a new pair of headphones for my brother. *Sharp intake of breath*...Deliberations.

This is very interesting, but if you don't know where this originated from then where did you find it?

This has been the subject of much debate in the Liara thread. It appears to be a comment from a former BW employee, and there is a lot of corraborating evidence that its authentic (inlcuding a lot of cut dialogue that is still available on the PC version of the game), Can't say for sure, though.

I also support this as DLC. Replay value on adding something like this would make ME2 totally awesome.

Yeah, like everything else that was cut. <_< That beginning sounds more like the game that ME 2 should have been.

He linked to his source on the word "body" towards the beginning.

None of that was actually planned, the reason Legion has dialogue in almost every mission is because his acquisition was originally planned to be separate and possible very early in the game. They eventually folded Legion and the IFF mission together in order to use those resources more efficiently.

So they did cut down missions by merging those two into one, but they never had a massively different beginning of the game planned.

Not actually cut, but changed.

And I like the changes. Tali's recruitment mission in Haestrom is INCREDIBLE.

The only thing i found confusing was legions energy source, i know that in ME1 on noveria the geth went into a hibernation mode to hide theyre heat signatures but to save energy? Assumed it was some type of oxidization thing dealing with lolscience and synthetic blood. And as for the early legion and tali my game im paying right now i actually edited legion in at the begining didnt know about tali having the same thing. As far as i can tell with his dialogue he gets maybe 20 extra tid bit lines around the planets, some have nothing at all (Mordins loyalty mission) and his last set of dialogue ive seen (dealing with when the geth became sentient) cant be done till i guess after the IFF, been building a consensus for 7 hours now.

Its true. As much as I like Liara, I don't think playing as her in the beginning of the game after the first scene where shep dies before going back to shep would have worked well. Its not good narrative storytelling, it would have broken flow, it might have been confusing, and it would have hurt immersion.

I like it. Very interesting read, and if it were possible to turn it into DLC, I'd fork over the cash for it. But then, I never had a problem with Joker's mission, either. In fact, I really liked it. Had a whole different "horror" feel to it.

It IS rather reminiscent of KoTOR 2, and I heart that game. <3

I think it's wise that BioWare cut this. It might not seem to confusing to most of us, but think if we had just played the game for the first time. Playing as a Geth we know nothing about would be very odd way to start the game.

Just wish Legion didn't have to be shoved to the end of the game as a result.

The thing is, this must have been very early because the comic book was announced along time ago, so I think they thought of this idea first but then decided it would be too confusing and it would be. You play Shepard, and then boom you die. All of a sudden you are playing Liara and Legion. It would do alot of harm then good.

I didn't go back and re read the liara thread but last checked neither I or any of the members in said thread has actually found any of the dialogue pertaining to said canned opening unlike the other content that was "cut" ( eg FFA recruitment of team members are pretty evident by the amount of unused dialogue in the afc containers )

Im going to have to say I would have preferred this. That's not to say the stock opening was bad, but honestly I just wish I had a little more Legion time (free of consequences) .

It's what Chris L'Etoile said. He wrote Legion, so he should know.
