I personally like this version better. That said, I understand why it was changed. Probably despite my preference, it is better the way it is now. Sometimes what looks cooler on paper is different in execution. This might be just be one such thing. So no regrets here.

This said, I believe this to be a drawing board scrapping. I think the story to be true, but this was probably changed when half the team were still in their underwear starting on the project (don't ask about the underwear reference.. old inside joke where I worked once). The reason why we have dialogue left in the junk code is because Legion and Tali were recruitable earlier.

As mentioned before, Legion was changed to join up with during the IFF mission. As for Tali she was pushed to after Horizan to mix up the pace ME1 returners came back at. I doubt they were scripting or even doing VA recordings when this version of the beginning was scrapped.

What everyone else said about 'wish this had been available' (especially for people importing an ME1 save), especially regarding having more time to play with Legion without damning the entire Normandy crew to primordial ooze deaths.

I don't know where this originated from (probably around here), but from the sounds of it, I really like this opening better. Looks like ME2 may have gotten the KOTOR 2 treatment...

Simply cutting or changing content isn't the KOTOR 2 treatment.  Every game does that.

The KOTOR 2 treatment is where the cut content is important to the storyline and the developers never bother to replace it, leaving massive plot craters that reduce the entire story to an incomprehensible mess.

Liara was by far the least interesting of the ME1 cast, and Legion demands too much explanation to be introduced to the audience separately from the main protagonist.  Shoehorning them into the beginning wasn't needed.  That's not to say we shouldn't have had more game time with Legion, but it didn't need to be that early.

I like the sound of this better too. Kind of annoyed that it was scrapped just for the sake of newbies to the series... like enough wasn't already seemingly sacrificed in fear if alienating newcomers as it is.

I like this version better, including the "decide what happened in ME1 via dialog choices" part. Much better than the "HERP DERP EVERYTHING RENEGADE AND EVERYONE WHO COULD DIE DID" we got...

Oh jesus christ. Until there's actual evidence, it's just propaganda to try and give the game the 'Fable' effect. Talk about what it was supposed to have so people are disappointed with what's there.

Again. Provide evidence that any of this is, in fact, true.

It is actually very cool but I think Bioware was right to cut it. Its not something the audience needs to see from the point of view of the narrative and at that point the game would have been simply throwing too much information at you at once.

That sounds like it would added a half hour or so to the game and given legion some more backstory so I'm kinda bummed they decided to scrap this if it's true.

I think I would have perfered this over the non skippable begin now. Maybe the Liara DLC is going to be this or something similar.

None of that was actually planned, the reason Legion has dialogue in almost every mission is because his acquisition was originally planned to be separate and possible very early in the game. They eventually folded Legion and the IFF mission together in order to use those resources more efficiently.

So they did cut down missions by merging those two into one, but they never had a massively different beginning of the game planned.

How do you know this?  I'm just curious.

If you have the PC version you can turn him on before you get IFF and take him places. He says something evey where you take him, or at least nearly every where. He never uttered a word on Horizon, Tali blabbed all the way through it though. His over-clocking comment on Samara's recruitment mission is my favourite so far.

You'll note that this was only one of the reasons they gave.
There are others, and they are legitimate.

Scrapping this as the opening seems like a good choice to me as well, it would be extremely cool if we could get this as a DLC or something though, where Legion/Liara explains what happened back there (flashback style)

And yes, I found the amount of time we get to spend with Legion without damning the crew pretty dissapointing as well. I used the save game editor on the PC to acquire him earlier on my current playthrough so I can see all his dialogue and hoping it won't influence the endgame.

I think it's right that they scrapped it. The games are so tied to Shepherd, that it's best the line between death by suffocation and reawakening at the Cerberus base are close together - Shepherd has initially no idea how he got there, and the intervening years are just a nothing to him/her: a mission centred on Liara and Legion would have somewhat spoiled the first scenes by diluting the intensity by breaking the Shepherd/player link.

I enjoyed Joker's mission, but it's very short and occurs at a place in the game that isn't as important to setting the scene and the tone.

Anything that would have replaced Legion's "no data" response for why he's still wearing the armor with some silly practical reason is actually a negative, not a positive.

*Sigh...*
If this will more or less confirmed then this will be very sad example of respect for series continuity... and i will say very harsh and clear TO HELL WHIT NEWBIES!!!... if they could be lost at the ME 2!!! beginning then this will be THIER OWN DAMN FAULT because of starting ME games from the middle of the series.

BUT NOOOO players who spend hours in ME 1 loosing sanity by driving Mako sometimes against law of Gravity, doing many side missions, develop relationship whit in game characters after imported thier characters to ME 2 recivied hard and painful punch in the face because for Bioware more important were newbies moneys..
Speaking the truth now i could do all major ME 1 missions and simply use cheat to maximize character statistics and even don't bother to create any Li and in ME 2 i will stand in EXACTLY THIS SAME ENTRY POINT as whit character who have 40 consecutive hours in ME 1... really GREAT FREAKING JOB BIOWARE...

Honestly... now i start to have very grave feelings about ME 3 because if they cut ME 2 in favor of series newbies then WHO gives us ANY GUARANTEE that ME 3 will not suffer similar fate???

I see that Bioware after all didn't learn anything from failures of Kotor 2 and NWN 2 which were plainly killed by Obsydian and to be honest for me Mass Effect 2 should have text add on STAND ALONE GAME - Mass Effect 1 experience NOT REQUIRED because Mass Effect 2 in current shape IS NOT continuation of Mass Effect 1... period.

And for ME 3... i will wait now for many different reviews before i will ever consider to buying that game because i don't plan to start another stand alone game where choices made in ME 2 won't matter at all because they will be sacrificed at the altar of availability for another waves of Mass effect newbies...<_<

Somehow I think this is fan fiction because there's absolutely no evidence since from the link it states that it came from wiki where they have removed it

Eurgh. This is absurd. Anything people wish were in the game is automatically considered to have been in there and then cut out.

And they usually blame EA along with it.

I don't buy it.

However, I do wish we could get a DLC where we could get Legion earlier in the game... they're too full of win to be acquired so late =(
