wanted to play a total outcast, was gonna go city elf/reaver but then i got to thinking, does your class actually effect how people react to you in any way? I would hope so. I know elves get treated poorly, but what about the class you pick? specifically going blood mage or reaver. I heard they are hated, and suposedly certain things happen with party members if you pick one, but the important question is NPCS

do you actually get treated worse/differently by npcs if you go one of these routes?

Wynne will actually attack you if she finds out you are a blood mage (at least acording to the players guide) and being a complete jerk and getting the reaver special requires you to taint the sacred ashes which both wynne and lilianna disaprove of and they will both leave you (or attack you first if they are in your party during the sacred ashes quest

ya like i said im aware of what happens with your party members, i mean do the npcs in the game world treat you any differently. I.e. loath or fear you? I would think so especially with blood mages

Can SOMEONE please tell me how to taint the Sacred Ashes? There is no option to for me!

My character is a blood mage. Wynn loves me like a grandmother and never mentioned it once.

I even make a sport of stealing health from party members. While she's around.

You have to be willing to talk to the reaver leader. If you didnt talk to him and just killed him then you can not taint the ashes. You talk to him and he gives you a vial of blood to dump on there then you can choose what to do when you get to the ashes

No. And I even went to Redcliffe first, so I became a Blood Mage quite early in the game. No NPC mentioned it so far.

thanks a lot gacatar.. that answers taht i guess

thats VERY disapointing =( so people will treat a good goody templar the same as a horrible blood mage or reaver.. fantastic, how dymanic!

well i wouldn't like npcs to react for the class i chose, i'm planning to be a blood mage but more for "political reasons" (i.e. i want to be an apostate, kind of subversive, flirting with obscure powers), but not an "evil mage"

so i'd rather they react to my ACTIONS and appreciations instead of reacting to my class, so all this is actually good news for me

Wrong. She doesn't give a damn. My Mage's a Blood Mage and they're good friends.
Specializations itself have absolutely no impact, the way you gain them sometimes have though (Such as unlocking Reaver)

It's not like your forehead is stamped with "Blood Mage" once you decide to become a Blood Mage.

Also, very few people can tell tell what sort of magic a blood mage does as the minority of people in the world haven't even seen a mage in action.

However, I think that party members like Wynn should have huge problems with stuff like being/becoming a reaver/blood mage.

I don't know, I think it would be better for some NPC's to "psychically" know your class than for none of them to react at all even when you use blatantly obvious blood magic in front of them.

Ideally they would react only when you use blood magic in their presence, or in the presence of someone in that town/city/region, but that would probably be much harder to code.

Of course, if they did psychically know your class I'm sure some people, possibly even the same people, would be complaining about that. Still, I do wish they had either not allowed you to become a blood mage, or put in reasonable reactions if you use blood magic.

From a gameplay point of view it makes sense not to make Wynn leave you for just BEING one. However if Wynn is with you when you decide to become one...that's a different issue.

Specializations are only a problem for party members if you do the actual process of obtaining them while the said party members are in your group. For example if you taint the ashes while Liliana or Wynn are present they will attack you. Otherwise no one cares.

Unlocking Blood Mage happens in a situation where nobody else could possibly know about it, so no, that doesn't make sense there.  And if an NPC hates blood mages, they should leave or attack you as soon as they learn you are one, unless they respect the Wardens' neutrality and the fact that as you say in one dialogue, "Wardens don't forbid blood magic...anything it takes to win."  If that's the case, they should say it, and be clearly uncomfortable continuing to work with you if they choose to do so at all.

Overall I would say that if the writers/developers are not willing to put in the appropriate reactions/responses to being a character that is, story-wise, reviled or otherwise outcast in an RPG, they should simply never give the player the opportunity to become that class.  If they don't have the time/resources to include appropriate in-character reactions to me being a Blood Mage, then they shouldn't include it as a possibility in the first place.

None of the NPCs (including Wynne) have said a word about me being a Blood Mage. Just be be a jerk, I even gave Wynne the Blood Mage specialization when she got a new specialization point. Now she is what she hates. Tee hee.

I turned Wynne into a Blood Mage. That is the ultimate irony. She never said a word.

Perhaps the sad old cow will find a way to keep herself alive with the newfound forbidden knowledge, after all.

I agree with the being a Blood Mage not causing issues is a little strange, especially since the rest of the game is so well developed.

I'm sure someone already suggested on these forums that to make an NPC specialise it should be through dialogue, and not just sticking a point in a specialisation, it would make a whole lot more sense.

All in all I was pretty disappointed with the Blood Mage, after seeing what Jowan did I pretty much fell in love with the specialisation, thinking I'd be slashing myself up to fuel my magic in no time. Ahh well.

the guide lies.  And guess what, you can also give Wynne the Blood Mage spec, which is wonderfully ironic.

I am religious in the outside life,so I give this Fereldan religion a high value, even if it is not mine. For instance,I chose a Templar/Reaver path, which makes me somewhat a demon who uses his powers to help others and serve the Maker.Hell,Dante from DMC is a demon, but you dont see him destroying the world,do you?And as far as the usefulness of this mix goes,I am very pleased.
