IGN only gave it a 8.3 while gamespot gave it an 8.5.

Those scores are pretty terrible for a game that is supposed to be the RPG of the year.

No doubt it will still sell relatively well in the USA but sales numbers in Japan are not nearly as high as past Final Fantasy titles.

With Final Fantasy XIII's failure, the franchise is no doubt going to become increasingly less lucrative.  Perhaps it's time Square/Enix outsource development to another company.  Can anyone say Bioware?!  Yes please!

The game is what all of the detractors feared it would be.  Just a sixty hour long, linear interactive movie where 30 hours is spent grinding, and the rest is spent watching cheesy, pretentious, JRPG melodrama that takes place in the same sci-fi/high fantasy like environment that every final fantasy game has been in since Final Fantasy VII.  It's gotten very stale.

I for one am pleased that the Final Fantasy franchise is one step closer to it's demise or rebirth as something worthwhile.

Lets hear it for Mass Effect 2, the RPG of the year!  Final Fantasy XIII will slip under the radar just like Final Fantasy XII did.

Do you have sales figures?

In the USA, no.  Not yet.  In Japan it sold about one and a half million copies it's first week.  That is a lot but not nearly as much as previous Final Fantasy games.  Final Fantasy VII for example sold 2.3 million copies in just 3 days.

While 8.5 is a decent score, it seems odd for a Final Fantasy to score less then 9.5.  I guess I should have seen it coming with all the subpar games Square has been putting out since Final Fantasy 12.  (Was Dragon Quest 8 the last half decent game the company made?)

Hopefully now Square-Enix will focus on making new IPs that are good, or cave in to demand, and give us the proper Chrono Trigger sequel we deserved for the last 15 years.Image IPB

The problem is that a lot of the old talent responsible for Squaresoft's past masterpieces are long gone.  Square does not have the talent or imagination that they used to and it shows.

Dragon Quest VIII was good in my opinion.  The thing I like about Dragon Quest is that it doesn't take itself too seriously.  Unlike later Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest knows it's silly and it doesn't try to be anything more than an enjoyable RPG.

Dragon Quest 8 was developed by Level 5, and published by Squeenix.

Oh yeah, forgot about that.  It seems these days Square/Enix are at their best when they outsource development which is why I would love to see a Bioware/Square collaboration(NOT a merger though).

Dragon Quest VII(then known as Dragon Warrior VII) was also great.  One of the last Enix games before the Square/Enix merger.

A suggestion then: Look for the games by  "Mistwalker Studios". This company was founded by Hironobu Sakaguchi (Creator of Final Fantasy series), and many other Squaresoft employees who weren't happy with the Square-Enix merge. Right now they are developing for the 360 and Nintendo, but it seems in the future they intend to work with Sony too (No PC yet... :pinched:)

Wait, what?

Since when is an 8+ a score that warrants an "only" before it... And since when isn't a Final Fantasy game overhyped? I'm planning to pick it up, I'll just pretend it's not called Final Fantasy. I believe it's going to be quite good if you take it in as any other JRPG. But Square is trying too hard to innovate a genre which hasn't seen any major change for at least a decade. Lost Odyssey used the same ancient formula that most every JRPG has since the NES era, and it was one of the best games I've ever played.

I've played Lost Odyssey and I really wanted to like it.  Unfortunately I thought that the gameplay was just so derivative and boring that I lost interest by the second disc.
The storyline seemed pretty decent and I liked the characters but the gameplay was just so dull and unoriginal.

I haven't tried Blue Dragon yet although I have heard it's pretty good.  I might try that.

that was such a troll of a topic start...

nothing is official until people actually play the damn game, word of mouth will show the truth, opening sales are 1000% hype sales, they have no idea whether it will actually be good because they only have biased reviews and trailers to go off of

i don't even see what is so bad about these new FFs, ive been playing 12 for the past six hours and yeah its grindy with some bull**** (****ing cactuar cheated and killed 2 hours of game play), but there is nothing wrong with the battle system and while the main character is FLAMING the story seems fine (minus the tomato), FF's are known for their great stories and there is no possible way to deliver such a story in any other format

honestly there has been enough hate about FF's and JRPGs, if you don't like them you don't need to go to these lengths, all of these threads should be LOCKED IMMEDIATELY (screw the rules damnit)

Julie: "Mom, Dad ... I'm failing Math."

Mom: "Oh, no! What happened?"

Julie: "The last test, there were a couple problems I didn't know how to do. I studied too much on one kind of algorithm and forgot to even look at how to do this other equation."

Mom: "You did really bad on the last test then? Oh, honey... what'd you get?"

Julie: "85%."

Dad: "Wait, did you say 85%?"

Julie: "I'm so sorry, Dad."

Dad: "Isn't an 85% like a B- grade?"

Julie: "It's a B."

Mom: "Honey, getting an F would be a failing grade. Scoring less than 60%, I think."

Julie: "Yeah, but..."

Dad: "Wait, you got a B on your last test - what was your class grade before the test? Was the B not enough to pull your grades up?"

Julie: "No, no, my grade was an A/A+ until this test. That's why the B is so bad - it's not as good as I've done before."

Dad: "Honey, you still aren't failing."

Julie: "But ... but a B isn't as good as an A! Since it's less, it means I'm failing!"

Mom: "No, no... darling, if you screwed up one kind of problem by focusing too much on another kind of problem, fix that for the next test. Learn from your mistakes, since you are right in thinking you could do better and have done better in the past, but your grades overall are great and even the B is very good."

Julie: "I don't understand - my friends were telling me that since I was getting basically an A+ that getting a B was like failing the whole class."

Dad: "What kind of grades are your friends getting?"

Julie: "I think B's. Shelly used to get C's but she got a B- on the last test so she's doing GREAT!"

Mom: "Shelly improved, honey, but your B is still better than her B-."

Julie: "But it's not as good as my A's!"

Dad: "You aren't always going to get A's. Sometimes B's are good enough. One above average test amidst all exceptionals does stand out, but it's still very good."

Mom: "Julie, you're "friends" are just trying to drag you down because even your worst is better than their best."

Julie: "Really? Thanks Mom. Thanks Dad."

While I agree that the Final Fantasy series sucks balls I would hardly call it a failure. While it is good that FF XIII has gotten a lower score (nowhere near as low as it deserves) as long as the braindead idiots who brought the 12 games that came before plus their spin offs and sequels or whatever, this game will still sell like hotcakes.

It sounds like every other FF.

An 8 point score isn't a failure, btw. That's stupid to say that.

I like Lost Odyssey. The story and characters maybe aren't amazing, but I enjoyed them more than any other JRPG I've played in a good while. The gameplay doesn't really do the game any favors, but I found the combat system to be just serviceable enough to not drag the whole thing down.

Being honest, I don't care much how Final Fantasy XIII does one way or the other. I'm just not a fan of the series. I have nothing against it, but I lost track of which Final Fantasy game was which at least three or four games ago.

For a main Final Fantasy.  An 8 is a new low.

The only way I'll ever even consider playing a Final Fantasy game is if the developers do the following.

1.They actually make a main protagonist who is not an adolescent.(99 percent of all JRPGs are sinfully guilty of this)

2.They stop using the same tired old futuristic/high fantasy setting that has gotten really old

3.No more random encounters

4.No excessive micro management(I don't want to be scrolling through menus for half the game)

5.They bring back a world map and exploration.

Final Fantasy is a FAILURE, every one of there games is a failure! Every guy in their game ends up looking like a woman! It's so sterotypically japanese and really puts me off. Square Enix also ruined Supreme Commander 2.
