Indeed. More bloodshed. Another game where everyone dies!

I really loved that story. Where else do you play a game where most of the characters don't survive.

But yeah, pretty good game. I got bored, but I'm bored of games in general lately.

If you haven't read it (and you care to) I think this is a pretty awesome review of the game:

http://www.gamesrada...715115627250082

It says some things that make me happy, namely:
Focused, streamlined action; no BS filler
&
The streamlined, focused structure eliminates potential tedium without
dumbing anything down, and the battle system strikes an elegant balance
between strategy and fast-paced action. Stunningly beautiful graphics
and a pervasively meticulous level of polish throughout only add to the
experience

I would welcome BS filler if they could recreate the greatness that was FF6.

Op, that's dumb. Play the game first, then recommend it or not. Don't go by ratings. Jesus, no one can think critically for themselves anymore.

So I just beat it.

Thoughts?

Most of the characters get really dumbed down later on, and lose alot of the things that made them interesting, it really feels like they just threw together a random ending, as many of the characters just completely break away from the established character that was built to do random things because it looks cool, and they end up failing at that to.

The combat gets a little better about halfway through, but shortly after it improves, they basically give you a button that lets you beat every encounter in the game with one shot, and you can use it every single fight, totally ruined the combat after that, and I really felt let down by it, I've never been a big fan of JRPG combat, but it helps pass the time, and after this it felt more like an interactive movie then a game.

Sazh is awesome, seriously, screw the other characters, Sazh should have been the main and only character, and it would have made the game so much better, he just goes from alright at the start, to great around the middle, to the best damn character in the game by the end, I would really like to see more of him.

The linearity was fairly bad at first, but around the middle it starts to open up again, sadly near the end they basically just decided to drop all pretenses and made every map an exact straight line where you can see the exit from the start, but its not something I exactly cared about because at that point I just wanted to finish the game, if you really cared about the story though, it would probably ****** you off.

The story overall was different, it really stops making sense at various points, and I get the feeling I was missing something, even though I made sure to keep up to date with it, I really think they dropped sections of the game and just forgot to re-add that section of the story. it gets really really bad near the end, and even I am not sure exactly what happened, besides the obvious stuff, it just, doesn't really make sense, and there is no real motivation behind anything other then HURR HURR PLOT MOVE FORWARD, which bothered me since it started out so well.

Honestly, if your a superfan of FF, have every game, and have awaited this title since it was announced, you'll like it, if you just kind of like JRPGs, you'll most likely be somewhat disappointed shortly after the halfway mark, and if you are thinking of starting out with a new JRPG, don't waste your cash.

The problem is that a lot of the old talent responsible for
Squaresoft's past masterpieces are long gone.  Square does not have the
talent or imagination that they used to and it shows.

The only way I'll ever even consider playing a Final Fantasy
game is if the developers do the following.

1.They actually make a main protagonist who is not an adolescent.(99 percent of
all JRPGs are sinfully guilty of this)

2.They stop using the same tired old futuristic/high fantasy setting that has
gotten really old

The above describes my personal feelings
Also make their games less feminine and I’ll start giving their products a
chance again

Or Vandal Hearts or Suikoden1-2 that not on a hand held
platform ie. psp

It would be nice, but then again it might be made an abomination based on what I’ve seen of their products so far.  I included Konami in there and although I am very cynical, I still hope for konami shutter…..square/enix to move ahead or turn around in a different direction.  I can only influence with my wallet by not buying their products and pretend to hope for the best.

The Final Fantasy XIII characters in a nutshell:

Lightning - Mopey no-nonsense marine type
Snow - Mopey head-strong hero type
Hope - King Mopes, king of Mopiness
Sazh - Mopey old man
Vanille - The happy one

Still like the game though, the battle system is frantic at times, but always manages to be deep and interesting, the summons are awesome, and the skill and weapon development systems are fun to use.

The characters, story, and acting are all terribly cliched, but they are pretty much what you'd expect them to be and they don't tend to get in the way too much.

Yes the characters are a thoroughly unlikeable bunch especially Hope and Snow.

But lets not forget that the black man is a horrible stereotype of the bumbling black slave worker you would likely see in an old black and white movie, I half expected him to start chewing on some watermelon.

However I must say that "Moms are tough" made me LOL hard.

I said further, in response to someone saying that "most gamers" play GTA with a sense of satire and sarcasm, as if playing the mobster is mocking the mobster, that I didn't know a single person who played the game like that personally.  I didn't say they didn't exist (I trust that this is how trueKieran plays the game as he brought it up) but that I didn't know anyone who played the game like that.

It's not in particular "mocking the mobster", as like I said, It's a rather big piece of sarcasm, making fun not in particular of the criminals but also the glorification and the way society deals with it (big piece of exaggerated sarcasm comming in: This poor man, Mr Bad A.. Seriel Killer can not be made responsible for brutally slaughtering 54 people! He had a very bad childhood, his father hit him at least once a year!) and not just the crime side, but also musical culture and commercials (if you turn the radio on). And yes, that's how I "play them" so to speak, at least until GTA San Andreas, haven't played GTA 4. I play those games to get a good laugh, and I don't get that by shooting at people or running them over with a car, but by watching the cutscenes, listening to the radion and so on.

In GTA games you usually don't get to go to the "next stage" because you're being "promoted" as a gangster, but because you get shot at if you try to go back to your old place, because the people you just did jobs for want you dead (GTA 3) or because of stupid gang wars, your home is now in "enemy terretory" (San Andreas). Seriously anyone who plays that game and say "hey cool, I want to live that kind of life" better spends his next vacation at a mental hospital.

In a way, it's similar to one of my favourite comedy series Black Adder. If you picture because someone is the protagonist, he has to be the "hero" of the show, then it's about glorifying a complete a......, if you take it for what it is, it's a comedy about a "not so nice guy" (being put politely) being permanently out of luck.

And by the way my first comment was not supposed to mean I look down on people who play games like FF, but simply explaining my complete inability to understand their preference. Tastes differ, that's life.

I think your character descriptions are pretty accurate but could be expanded on...

Lightning - Mopey no-nonsense marine type,
on her period.
Snow - Mopey head-strong hero type,
possibly retarded.
Hope - King Mopes, king of Mopiness,
nothing more needs to be said you nailed it.
Sazh - Mopey old man,
seems like he belongs in a different game.
Vanille - The happy one,
stoned off her ****ing head.

Since when are Final Fantasy Characters not archetypal and overacted? This is part of what I like about the series most of the time.

For an intelligent fellow, sometimes you are well..... slow. Even a beast knows to stay away from fire once it gets burned. This is the Bio boards, FPS games kill gaming and well you know the standard opinion about FF 13.

It's official, Final Fantasy XIII is a success.

"Square Enix sent word today that the RPG has sold more than a million units in North America, in the five days following its March 9 launch. This makes it set the record for the best first-week sales in Final Fantasy history"

I suppose Metacritic and reviews as means to divining the performance of a title has been debunked. :innocent:

I think FF13 can be summed up in the first seconds of this video:

Either your reaction is
"Wow that's cool".
Or it's
"....What the **** is that?"

And are metacritic's ratings really that bad?

There are far better rated games, sure. But 83 would make me happy if I were a game designer.

I think it has to do with how gamers have limited wallets or something and thus can only afford games that are above 90% rated.

Well, that's how it was back in the '90s anyway.

I don't think that's bad at all, especially given how Jrpgs are received by western reviewers in general (yes I know Im generalizing! lol)

I was just making fun at the title of this thread, which predicted the end of the series based on "the new low" of the review scores.
