That is because of your own preconceptions. Asari have a very different culture and (lack of puritan) morality to most humans.

Preconceptions or not... entering into combat with high heels on seems like a really bad idea.

While I don't like Jack's original outfit at all, I can at least understand the idea behind it, at least, if I'm right about what the idea behind it was. I think the strap-top look was intended as a way of displaying her tattoos, since she seemed to take such pride in them. After her "soul-cleansing" in her LM, she "put her past behind her" so to speak, and so she's more willing to cover up her "past," ie her tattoos. Thus, she gets a shirt as a new outfit.

I much prefer the loyal outfit, but I don't think the original looks trashy...just highly uncomfortable and stupid-looking.

I actually find Samara and Miranda's outfits more "offensive" in that regard. Samara, a highly respected, highly disciplined asari warrior-monk running around in high-heels, a skin tight jumpsuit with her breasts almost falling out? And Miranda wearing a suit that's so tight it could almost have been painted on, and also in high-heels? Come on, Bioware. I totally disagree with these design choices. I almost feel like Bioware (whether at EA's urging or not) tried to appeal to a relatively immature demographic, the whole "Heh heh heh...I like bewbs. BEWBS!" crowd. Frankly, I find it a bit insulting. I'd rather see women in armor that actuall protected them, and their casual outfit actually fit for being in public. Miranda and Samara's outfits are good for bedroom roleplay, but not for walking around in public in.

Good call, I thought the same thing when I saw Samara for the first time. I was like.. wow, this Justicar chick looks like a ****,... but I kept watching.

i much prefer Jack's LM shirted costume. Her tattoos really are beautiful, but the strap is just ridiculous. Beyond anything else, how bloody cold would she be in space? and on missions?

At least Samara's clothing covers the majority of her body. The split, and the flawlessly tailored to each boob top half makes perfect sense. Samara would be well aware that her body is as much a weapon as the rest of her arsenal. She is centuries old. Additionally, the Asari ARE superior in every way (as we are lead to believe by BioWare) so their armorers/tailors would be perfectly capable of crafting a set of armor for a Justicar that didn't result in wardrobe malfunctions.

The heels, well i love the fact that Miranda and Samara both wear heels... its VERY female superhero. A poster above mentioned Samara's likeness to a certain iconic Super... i hadn't noticed until you mentioned it, but it seems very true. Though considering the pattern on her costume, it could be drawing inspiration from that other "S" man. Spider-Man, and then add in the Black alternate costume...

Is massively better than her default costume.

Seriously, guys, I like boobs as much as the next person, but I am not attracted to the whole "Just covering the nipples" thing. I didn't like the annoying whatever-it-was sideboob costume with Morrigan in DA:O either.

I've heard people salivate and go "Huh huh huh, she's just wearing a belt over her nipples!"; that confuses me. I actually find that repulsive for some reason.

I would agree with the loyalty costume better than default, if the loyalty costume didn't seem like a hastily, and poorly done repaint of the default costume.

No argument here, but then again it would just take a fraction of biotic power to speed up movement to compensate. Speaking of which...would have loved it if Bioware added a branch of "martial biotics" (ie. biotic sprint, biotic melee) in ME3.

QFT. OTOH, that is rather in-character for her. She doesn't have any self-respect. It still looks retarded, though. Especially when she's in weird-ass environments like the Collector Ship.

Contrary to popular belief, heat does not transfer out of the body very rapidly in the absence of a  medium such as air or water, so freezing to death is not an immediate risk in outer space despite the extreme cold. Direct exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation would cause a severe sunburn to any unprotected skin (don't think the tats count as protection ;)) though.

Meh. Both Samara's and Jack's costumes seem fitting to me. While the designs can presumably be perceived as smexy eye candy, it also fits the character's personality, background and physique. I saw a mod where FemShep was wearing Samara's outfit, and it simply looked... wrong. Instead of getting that mystic, Amazon warrior vibe, you get the impression that FemShep bought an 'adult' Halloween costume three sizes too large for her body. (Not to mention those ultra large, non-frame complimenting cuts at the hip area. Ooof.)

The tattoos on Jack's body mostly acted as a good shirt substitute, IMO. When I first saw her in the trailers, it took me a few seconds to notice that she wasn't wearing a top. For some reason, putting a top on Jack takes away the spark of her personality -- I thought it was really interesting of the designers to display her history on her body, like a person who's unapologetic and bold about their identity, including the things they've done. So when Jack wears a shirt, it appears to hide that aspect, for me at least. Though I do I like her loyalty costume mainly because I enjoy all things shiny and black. :P (It's not hard to guess what color and material my Shep's armor is made of.)

For Miranda's costume, I always go with her loyalty set. The suit looks practical, appealing and professional. Seeing that Miranda belongs in the 'squishy' class of adepts, sentinels, etc., she doesn't need to wear heavy armor.

I think I understand now. After sparing the test subject, Jack gained a little bit of self-respect. No idea why she puts a shirt on after the renegade ending though.

It is true that space is an insulator, but when exposed to a vacuum sunburns are the least of your worries.  Apparently, explosive depressurization leads to rapid expansion of gases in the lungs, rupturing lung tissue.

Being raised in a Cerberus laboratory had likely isolated Jack from typical human ideals and standards of conduct. It's hard to say that she associates clothing (or lack thereof) with self-respect.

I'm willing to assume certain issues battles concearing female-toplessness have been won, an things are  much different in the future, especially on hubs like Omega and Illium which are in no way trammeled by human morals.

I prefer her default. I respect her-- and not once from now to back during her reveal did I find it odd, or unappealing. The shirt was clearly added just so they could air a trailer of her on tv, and so I rarely equip it.

Speaking as a male who's a huge fan of boobs, I'm fine if the gals want to lounge around the Normandy in sexy clothes, but when they're on a mission they better put some armor on and ditch the high heels. That was one of the things I liked about the first game and didn't like about the second.

You know, something else to keep in mind (and I feel kinda stupid because I didn't realize this until recently) but the outfit that Jack has on isn't really one she CHOSE.  If you look at it, it's basically a prison jumpsuit, unzipped all the way down to display her tattoos.  Yeah, she might have zipped it up, but it's not like they gave her a lot of fashion options on the prison space station, and that's the outfit she picked out because she felt it suited her the most. :)

That said... even as a fan of hers, I do prefer her with the shirt on.

I think I might like the shirt (the shirt itself, not the "decency" it grants) if it were golden or silver instead of red; it's just so incongrous with everyone else.

i don't mind her default Armour/attire. for me i saw it was not about the belt/boobs or the design as an 'attraction' of a half naked female. Its to show her tattoos, who she is. where shes coming from, her character. Tattoos 'act' as her clothing.

Morrigan's attire is designed to be attractive-sexy (and mage/witch-like etc). i like the concept of it, but it wasn't rendered well in 3D and so i find it a bit disturbing.

perhaps its the way i see the design? Morrigan's was designed to be alluring/sexy while jack was more about character. At least it makes sense- if bioware starting throwing half-clothed outfits everywhere i would get mad.

True, explosive decompression in vacuum is a killer unless you exhale oxygen from your lungs. Even so, you would become unconcious within approx 10-15 seconds. Still, exposure to the extreme cold and vacuum in outer space is survivable and measured in minutes, not seconds.

I wonder if the breather masks we see squad mates use would be sufficient in real life to counteract low pressure areas or even vacuum though...any thoughts on that?

Mass effect fields.  They're used to explain everything, including sustaining an atmosphere around derelict reapers, and holding the amosphere in on the Citadel that is otherwise completely exposed to space, amd so in that same vein, a breather mask just erects a field barrier around the wearer's skin, preventing decompression and exposure to radiation, and so on.

Yep, amply shown by her loyalty mission and conversations. Her self destructive behavior basically tones down after her loyalty mission so in a way Shepard is saving her from herself

Personaly i prefer all the characters in their original clothing, even Jack. As for Jack i never felt that her original get-up had anything to do with low self-respect nor do i think it had anything to do with showing off a half naked female. tennyochan said it well imo.

I do however have to say, that her loyalty outfit isnt just a colour-swap. Which is more then can be said about the other members. I mean, garrus loyalty suit i found redicules. Why change the suit but keep the destroyed part. -shrugs-

I don't like Jack's original outfit. But the loyalty one? Even worse. I am all for covering more skin, but that black vest looks like somebody spent the whole of, oh, maybe 15 minutes designing it.
