I skimmed the forums and I didn't see another post like this so I hope it isn't a repeat...anyways, this post is concerning character interactions in ME2 compared to ME1. Everything else about the game aside (which was still amazing), was anyone else severely disappointed with how the interactions with your squad members was handled? Yes, the side stories were deep and well written, but on a much simpler level than that I felt ME2 was lacking. There was hardly any build up to the side stories to begin with (Tali talked about her pilgrimage a lot in ME1 before you found data that could help her, but in ME2 sidequests just sorta came up randomly and they wanted you to deal with it NOW), and I didn't understand why Jack and Miranda had that explosive fight out of the blue and then because I'm not charismatic enough I have to choose who to loose loyalty with over a stupid argument even though my character had done so much for them (Miranda decided not to talk to me for the rest of the game, despite my going out of my way to save her sister) If a character is going to be that angry, I want a better reason.

I was really upset with how little you could interact with characters in this game in general, it all felt very rigid and set. In ME1 it felt like every time I talked to a character I learned something new about them and they always had interesting things to say...or at the very least the conversation could branch off in any number of unique directions, and there were many more missions and interesting main quests for them to have opinions about, to boot. But in ME2 they hardly talk AT ALL (ex. "I'm busy right now, can it wait?") and I felt a real disconnect from the characters for that reason. If the only time they have anything to say to me is 3-5 times throughout the entire game when they need something...I'm not feeling it. I understand that a lot of the character comes through in the side missions, but part of what makes them "alive" to me is getting to talk to them in the downtime, not just interacting with them when the mood suits them.

Just as another example, the romance with Kaidan in ME1 had such a nice, well-paced build up and conclusion (was that 'almost kiss' towards the end cute or what!?), whereas in ME2 I think I talked to Thane all of 4 times and we did little more than hold hands before he came in and slept with my character in a very anti-climatic sex scene (come on if you're gonna make it hot in the first game, don't wuss out for the second!!)....anyway just my humble opinion, thanks for reading :D

I agree completely, you barely got to talk to them outside of their loyalty missions, was pretty dissappointing.

I also really missed being able to constantly talk to your squadmates when you were on planets like in ME1 and not just at 1 specific place per planet..

You can thank the right wing, bible thumping morons for the toned down sex scenes. There was apparently a huge outcry over half a second of bare Asari ass and side-boob in the first ME so Bioware had to go PG with this one as far as sexuality is concerned. Oh, but don't worry about your poor yeoman or some random colonist being graphically melted alive by nano robots. Violence is cool kids, sex is naughty and will make you go blind.

I apologize for the rant, that just really gets my blood boiling. I agree with you that the squad member dialogue seemed a bit lazy at times. It made me miss just shootin' the breeze with Wrex on the old Normandy.

Agreed. I have seen it suggested elsewhere that it would be cool if in ME3 the characters move around the ship and are not ALWAYS in the exact same places doing the exact same thing. I mean, how cool would it be to walk onto the crew deck in ME2 and see Garrus and Tali having a conversation about Saren, then being able to go over and have a conversation with both of them? I would love things like that in ME3. It would make it all feel so much more real.

Didn't that incident just boost sales and make the right wingers look stupid, though? classy sex scene PLUS attention is totally a double win. Something like this discouraging Bioware doesn't make sense.

I'd like to respond to this thread but...

Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations.

On another note, I agree for the most part.

Personally, i didn't find this to be an issue. I generally went around the ship talking to team members after every third mission or so.

I'm sure it did, but there was also a negative backlash even if the reports of "Scenes that are pornographic in nature" were totally false and completely blown out of proportion.  People are sheep and will listen to whatever Glenn Beck and the rest of the terrorists at FUX News tell them and take it as gospel.  Bioware certainly doesn't need sex to sell a great game.  It's just frustrating that their creativity has to be stifled by idiots that are completely out of touch with reality.:(

Oh, and right wingers don't need any help looking stupid.

I agree that the conversation options can be limiting, especially with side characters such as Dr.Chakwas(sp?). Seems that once I shared a serrice ice brandy with her she has little else to do but look incredibly creepy as she robotically turns back to her desk. Another gripe I had with dialogue options concerns their strange tendency to take a romantic turn. I had no intention of having my female Shepard pursue a relationship in this game and yet when I simply wanted to learn more about a squad mate, things got awkward. This is especially true with Jacob Taylor.

...I gotta go.

Joking aside, yes, I too was expecting more build up to the loyalty quests along with more dialogue with the squad, especially post-suicide mission.

I don't particularly care that the sex scenes are 'toned down' or whatever. They're immaterial. What I've found to be the problem is Shepard's inability to speak with someone he/she is not romancing. This is especially true with MaleShep/Garrus and FemShep/Tali, which is ridiculous because they had a fair bit to say in ME. Plus, I much prefer FemShep's Tali because she seems to be the one from ME rather than MaleShep's fan service in-love-with-Shep Tali.

Wouldn't it be great if the mature elements could just be a user setting? The game would then be even more customizable and would then adjust to everybody's liking. If the parents want to set everything to Disney's setting, fine. If I want to play as an adult in an adult game, fine, too. This would help with ME2's identity crisis about whether or not it's for kids or adults.

And, yes, realistic sex scenes are evil while burning people alive is totally fine.

That is such an awesome idea. Brilliant! It would be so easy to implement, as well. Why not do it? And while they're at it, I'd like to be able to use EDI to locate crew members if they're not at their stations. I'm always looking for more reasons to talk to EDI since she is my favorite ME2 character.

The idea that BigBody brought up reminds me of Oblivion. In that game NPCs would move around in and out of buildings and perform certain actions according to the time of day. They would even sleep at night. *gasp*

They did do Mordin right, every time you go to talk to him he's busy doing a different thing.

Would have been much better if they did that for all of the characters.

ME2 still has a mature rating, regardless of the toned down sex scenes.

And you should apologize for you rant, because it's doubtful you even watched the Fox News segment about it. They weren't criticizing the game as much as they were giving parents a heads up to the content that is in a lot of these new games, because a lot of them don't have a clue. And obviously ME1 was a prime example.

Blame the American right wing all you want, it was other countries that tried to ban the game due to a lesbian sex scene that really forced Biowares hand in the sequel. They want as many countries to buy their game as possible.

I hope someone from BioWare will see what we want so it doesn't happen in ME3 haha
