Well, to be honest, my main reason for thinking that he isn't Fiona's son is because he isn't a mage and I don't like the idea of Maric killing the pregnant servant and her baby (like Freckles said).

?!!  Why would Maric have to kill a servant girl and her baby?!  The way I picture it is that he asks around and Eamon knows of a servant woman who recently died in childbirth, and this is how they pass Alistair off as that woman's child.

As for being child of a mage, Alistair is a templar, and they use limited magic.  Mage talents are genetic but not all descendants of mages become mages themselves, as evidenced by Isolde.

I'm definitely on Team Fiona.  Going to be quite disappointed if she's not the babymama!

That doesn't really make a lot of sense. Why would Goldanna not immediantly know that her mother died in childbirth, along with the baby. As far as I know, she was at Redcliffe. The biggest thing is that Goldanna knew BEFORE he mother died that the baby was Maric's, and then the people lied and said the baby died. What you are saying implies that Eamon asked around for a servant who had recently died (no more than a day at the VERY most) and then found that woman's daughter and told her that her mother and the baby died. And where would have Goldanna gotten the idea that the baby was Maric's?

Goldanna speaks about this incident as though it was told to her by others. Either she was very young and not aware of what's going on, or else she wasn't at Redcliffe.

A less heinous possibility - Eamon has a maidservant who has had a little...."accident". Maric contacts Eamon about hiding Fiona's child. Eamon offers to pay the maid handsomely if she will lie about the father of her child, and offers to set the child up to be raised elsewhere in return. Maid accepts knowing that she didn't want the child and can't afford to care for another anyways. Maid dies unexpectedly in childbirth, her baby either dies too or is sent off to be raised elsewhere. Alistair taken in as maid's "son", Goldanna sent off because she's a harpy. :-P The last part is my favorite, of course.

What I don't understand is why they would ask her to lie about the child being Maric's at all? Why not give the baby to the chantry and call it a day? It just seems like Alistair would be far more likely to find out that the Maid was not his mother and this his mother was a Grey Warden.

I've suspected for some time that it's been Eamon's plan to raise a potentially weak heir to the throne that he could use to his advantage in the future, should the ocassion ever arise.  It actually makes a lot of sense, IF Rowan were already dead and Cailan was the only heir.  Why not keep the bastard child around just in case?  Raise him to know of his heritage but disillusion him to any place he might have so that when the time comes, he will turn to the only man he trusts enough to help him to rule - the man who helped raise him.

Maric said he wanted to raise the child close to the court, and Eamon is a trusted friend. Honestly how this works out is murky in my mind, but I could see Goldanna getting the idea that the baby was the king's if it was found out that Maric was visiting and asking about the maid.

You know what? You guys suck. You make too much sense.

Fiona is Alistair's mother. I'm gonna go cry in a corner, because I've been wrong all this time. It would be very odd if Fiona wasn't his mother.

Excuse me while I cry in the corner:crying:

That is the only thing that makes me happy about this situation. I actually got a lump in my throat thinking about when he will (hopefully) meet his mommy.

Dammit Bioware, if you make us speculate on all of this, then reveal that she is his mother and then she dies before he can meet here, I will...I will...

Probably just cry. Bah.

edit: Hey! Us Alistair fan-girls get a mother-in-law!

im going to throw a wrench in the theory

Loghain talks as if Rowan was still alive when Alistair was born when you ask him about it

and no "maric lied to him" doesnt cut it as an excuse IMO since Rowan was long dead by the time Fionas child was born and im pretty sure Loghain can tell the difference between a baby and a young boy

but in the end I dont really care if hes Fionas child or not and im not going to argue about it

But that's assuming that Loghain ever met Alistair as a young boy, and there is no evidence to suggest that he ever did. Loghain proves that he doesn't know much about Alistair when he claims to see none of Maric in him, when I think any of us who have read the books immediately notes how much Alistair is like him.

I'm of the opinion that Maric never overtly lied about it - Loghain simply made assumptions about why Maric would keep a bastard child hidden.

We are a sentimental bunch in Team Fiona, 'tis true.  I am going to stick little pins in a David Gaider voodoo doll if Alistair is not Fiona's.

2 years dead, not really "long" dead.  Loghain probably didn't know about Fiona's baby, however, since he was in Gwaren and Maric talks about concealing it from him.  Other than Goldanna, the idea that Alistair was Maric's might not have gotten out until later.  My pet theory is that it got out widely when Isolde showed up on the scene.  She's the type to blab, you know, esp. to try to convince people that Alistair wasn't Eamon's child.

What Sandi said. It's been stated many times by the devs (DG in particular) that the codex is made up of hearsay and biased opinions, etc. There is very little actual clear unarguable TRUTH in this game. Which is marvellous, really.

In The Calling, Maric states, "Loghain isn't going to like this" then Fiona tells him she'd like the baby raised away from court. One could assume, based on Maric's presumption of how well Loghain was going to take the news, that he just never bothered to tell him. Loghain was in Gwaren, I believe, and with Maric taking more of an interest in ruling and there being somewhat of a rift between them, I doubt he would come to Denerim often. It would be easy enough to hide the baby and just not mention it. Then, if Loghain found out later (depending on how much later), he could be left to draw his own conclusions about Alistair's age and why he was hidden away.

Hm. Maybe, given Loghain and Rowan's history, it was easy for Loghain to believe that Maric would have cheated on Rowan. It's always easiest to believe the worst of the people we love the most (as odd as that sounds). Maybe he wanted to believe that Maric didn't truly end up loving Rowan or something. Who knows. Poor Loghain wasn't the most stable of individuals at any point.

...And I really need to stop posting at 3 a.m. because I ramble.
