I believe in the old adage "Never give up. Never surrender." especially when on a galaxy quest for survival...
Please leave a post with your specifications, windows version, and what worked or didn't work for you.
The game crashes at these three location:

  • Freedom’s Hope colony, at boss fight
  • Rouge VI mission, when arranging the reflectors so you can escape
  • Reaper IFF mission, when at the core

Three possible theories about what triggers the crashes:

  • The game is conflicting with nVidia boards/drivers, probably due to incorrect coding or optimization.
  • nVidia drivers are probably buggy with latest features in UT 3.5 engine.
  • There is a conflict between the game, nVidia drivers, and Windows (Vista or 7). (Don’t think XP has an issue unless told otherwise.)

Recommended game settings in Mass Effect 2 Configuration Utility if having issues or wanting increased performance

Video

  • Windowed: Full Screen
  • Window Mode: Default
  • Aspect Ratio: (Normal)4:3 for CRT, other options for widescreen
  • Resolution: 1024x768 for CRT, next closest for widescreen
  • High Quality Bloom: Off
  • Film Grain: Off
  • Motion Blur: Off
  • Dynamic Shadows: Off
  • Light Environment Shadows: Off
  • Number of Cinematic Lights: Default or 1
  • Use Spherical Harmonic Lighting: Off
  • Anisotropic Filtering: Off

Updated Fix, right here folks. Thanks to the commenters for keeping this topic going.

Brightness

  • Adjust the in-game brightness setting down to -2.

Mandatory for any problems or if you want the game to run good:

  • Download and install the latest nVidia driver if yours does not match the latest ones listed on the site (even if you might have one later than shown):
  • Download and install latest Sound driver if yours does not match the latest ones listed from your manufacture’s site: (I gave links only for Creative Labs)
  • Download and install latest version of DirectX if yours does not match latest version on the site:
  • Empty Windows temp folders, even the internet one.
  • Restart Computer
  • Download and install or reinstall any downloadable content.
  • Empty Windows temp folders, even the internet one.
  • Download and install or reinstall latest Mass Effect 2 patch:
  • Empty Windows temp folders, even the internet one.
  • Play Mass Effect 2 (happily)

Try this if above didn't work:

  • Download and install latest version of Riva Tuner:
  • Run RivaTuner and do the following:
    • Looking at the main RivaTuner window you should see "Driver settings", below that is a box with "Customize..." and a triangle on the inner right side, click on the triangle.
    • Once clicked four buttons should appear right above it, click on the crude drawing of the DirectX logo and a new window should open up.
    • On the first tab there should be slider setting labeled "Mipmap LOD bias adjustment", slide it all the way right to "3.0".
    • Move on to the second tab and slide the slider to the right and ;"X" the boxes.
    • On the third tab make sure the first box is "X"’ed.
    • The fourth tab has the pixel shader settings, select both drop down boxes and select "disable shaders".
    • On the fifth tab, "X" the boxes once again.
    • The sixth tab is VSync and set the option to "Always on", and if you want you can set the prerender limit to 8.
    • The seventh tab is the texture tab and shows different options in the list with the boxes for each choice in the first drop-down box. "X" all the boxes in the list for each choice.
    • Still on tab seven, there is an area to enter a value for the amount of system memory to use for PCI textures, I entered 512(MB) but you don't have to if you don't want to.
    • Last drop down box on tab seven, set it to "force level 1..."
    • Now on to tab eight, deselect table fog emulation, as it’s not needed to be enabled.
    • The last and final tab, tab nine, select none for the first drop-down box and multisampling for the second drop-down, and make sure the boxes aren't selected.
    • Click apply, then ok and restart your computer if it asks you too.
  • Exit RivaTuner.
  • Empty Windows temp folders, even the internet one.
  • Play Mass Effect 2 (just to get pass troubled area)
  • Save game once passed trouble area and exit game.
  • Run RivaTuner and undo previous changes (unless you like how ugly the game is now)
  • Six was afraid of seven since seven, eight, nine; I left those tabs how I changed them.
  • Rinse, Repeat if necessary.

Additional notes:

Thus far no one with Windows XP has mentioned having the crash which I find to be very interesting and troublesome. If anyone with Windows 7 or Vista is dual booting or has access to run Windows XP at the same time, I would suggest they try Mass Effect 2 there and report back to us.
Look at the ground when those crashes normally are about to happen just in case it doesn't work for you. If in the core, get near the back door and look at it.
Looking at the ground prior to the "fix" still caused it to crash to the desktop about 75% for the first time the crashing effects happen and then by the second time the effects happened, it crashed anyway.
I would go back and refine the options but I made it pass those areas already. Due to me using only quick saves for parts of the game, I have no saves for any point exactly before those missions, nor do I wish to play from the beginning again. I have to finish Dragon Age.

My OLD computer's specs: (Its the one that had the problem)

  • Intel D915GEV-LK
  • Pentium 4 3.2GHz with 2MB cache (yes single cores work fine)
  • PNY DDR2 3.0GB (2x1GB, 2x512MB) in Dual Channel mode
  • PNY nVidia 8500GT
  • Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
  • Windows 7 Professional x86(32bit)

Thanks for the attempted fix. I can start the fight, but it cuts out on me after about 45 seconds, which is a lot better than when it crashed just walking into the room. At least you tried something, unlike BioWare which seems to not what to do anything about all these fixes. This is definitely the LAST game I will ever buy from them, its a shame, had good potental. Now I have to go uninstall this $50 piece of garbage. Thanks though for the try.

Thanks very much for the suggestion; like the above poster, the game ran for about 30 seconds longer than it usually does, but I still get a crash when the blue lightning pops up. Any diagnostic info I can pass along that would help?

Did you update everything? Also still try to face away from the source of the light to see if that helps.
My computer is a single core P4 3.2ghz, with 3gig DDR2, and an 8500GT, running Windows 7.
Put what your systems are so we can see similarities and differences.
Its possible that the "fix" only works for some nVida boards and systems.
By the way, I am runing the game at 1024x768 and in full screen mode.

I contacted EA support and they informed me to delete all the data in my temp folder (I had over a gigabyte of junk). After doing that everything ran perfectly.

Interesting, that doesn't seem like it should work unless the game uses the temp folder. If it does then their might be bad code collecting to a point where the game causes errors and crashes. Thus when after deleting the temp files, there is nothing to cause a problem.

If this works for other people I will be quite suprised, but how does it explain that it only happens for those with nVidia graphics cards? Do you have an nVidia card Varonine?

I believe you getting the errors rules out it being anything to do with intel and nvidia, so its just nvidia now. I do wonder if anyone getting the problem has xp, since if not then it might be a vista and windows 7 issue with nvidia.

I've got the exact same setup as you Leo, except I have windows 7 and only 2GB of RAM, and I have been getting the EXACT same issue with Blue Lightning Crashes. I will test your fix and hope that it works.

Would be nice if more people with the problem left a post here with their specs and which fixes worked for them. That way we can narrow down the issue and hopefully BioWare could address it in their next patch.

Same problem, crashes fighting Praetorians, at Jarrahe station, and at the Reaper IFF core. Having particular difficulty right now getting past the Praetorian near the end of the Collector Ship mission because it's hard to keep enough distance without having the blue beam making me crash.

Tried both fixes, they *appear* to slightly dampen the problem (It doesn't crash until the Praetorian is closer) but it still crashes when it is somewhat close. I've noticed it still crashes sometimes even if you look away from the beam.

Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 Ghz (Single core)

2GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB (Driver: 196.21)

Windows 7 Professional

I had almost nothing in my temp folder, deleted it, this time it crashed sooner.  This is the only problem I am having with the game,  I can run the rest of the game without any difficulty on the high settings with no problems.

Im running

AMD 64 3800 2.4 GHZ Single Core

4 GB RAM

NVIDIA 8500 GT

Windows VISTA 64K

I had this problem as well. This indeed seems to be a problem the game has with the Gxx GPU (like the G86), since people affected all have Graphics cards based on this architecture. This includes desktop and mobile versions of this Nvidia architecture and spans almost all of the 8xxx series and quite a few of the 9xxx series, with particular emphasis on the GT models.

I dabbled around with settings, drivers (official and non-official), underclocking, etc. with no avail. Sadly, my only alternative was to install a 250GTS to be able to play the game.

The issue is caused by extensive lighting depending on your specs, the only fix right now, apart from overhauling your system's graphics, is in-game in the form of controlling your power and fire output.

Things to avoid/fix:
Revenant Machine Gun (Use Vindicator until Geth, which has zero conflict issues.)
Shotguns (Rapid fire with ammo powers causes crashing, pace fire.)
Fortification (Causes issues when zooming and/or using AR, use Geth Shield Boost.)
Incendiary Rounds (Stop shooting when target is about to die, combined flames and bullets crash.)
Armor (Avoid reflective armor materials, use the duller ones.)

Basically the issue seems to be extensive lighting, as is, don't cause increases in lighting constantly, pace yourself. Shouldn't be a problem until you hit the Collectors in Hardcore and more so Insanity, at that point you will want to be defensive anyways. (Last boss on insanity will give you issues, knock him to 30% using Zaeed's Grenade and Samara's Reave then use your Cain Launcher. (If you do not have Zaeed I suggest Miranda's Warp.))

Just bear through is and pray that BioWare fixes this.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

The laser puzzle doesn't involve shooting. The Collector unit thingy crashes when it shoots you. The core's opening lightning animation causes the crash, not shooting it.

I never once had a problem shooting any of the weapons or using the powers.

It's not shooting specifically, I said specifically it is due to lighting, which comes from shooting as well as reflections. Whether or not it crashes because of shooting and others depends on your specs, the amounts of shooting/powers you use at once, and the reflectiveness of the environment.

I was simply giving a list of common things that cause crashing for you to avoid.

If shooting had anything to cause with the crashes then it would be happening more often which its not. There are plenty of fire fights at different parts of the game and I never had a hick-up and my computer is (mostly) 4 years old. These crashes happen only at those three areas and technically in none of them are you shooting.

At the core you can destroy the husks each time before you shoot the core, which triggers the lightning animation again and again till you destroy it, unless you one shot it.

I am pretty sure some people might be having crashes from using powers and firing guns, and those people probably should go and get new graphics cards.

Anyhow, you can't really avoid these 3 areas as 2 of them are mission critical.

Thanks for the tips, :)
but this thread is about those people who have crashing issues when there is blue light involved, like the attacks from Praetorians.
Just looking at the mass effect core of the derelict reaper (which is blue) causes a crash. We don't even get a chance to use weapons :crying:
I agree that it is a lighting issue and that it somehow relates with the UT engine and specific Nvidia cards of the Gxx series. Apparently, everybody who's getting this is either using Vista or W7, which are natively DirectX 10 and upwards, so DirectX could also be playing a role here. Chances are that it's some odd combination of these three that's causing this.

DirectX is mainly used by the game since I found a setting that more or less says: "use DX10=false"

So please make sure that everyone gets the newest DirectX which I put a link to in the first post.

I'm having the same troubles...

Windows 7 32-bit

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 8GB RAM

GeForce 9500GT and GeForce 6800GS

Tried running in a window, turning GFX settings down, updating all drivers etc.

I've been getting crashes throughout, apparently related to lighting, but have been able to get past them in two or three tries until the reaper core.

With the single core problems and now this, I'm REALLY wishing I bought the 360 version :/
