This is actually pretty easy to do.. After the council berate you and all that she comes to console you if she likes you enough.. When that happens just pick all the renegade options.. I've done it and it works.. That way the whole game you can talk with her if you want..

-She's annoying? 
-She's exceedingly intense, especially about her opinions?
-She's got the appearance of a cross eyed-hamster?
-She's specist?

I can think of more.

What makes me feel weird is that in ME2 Liara always treats Shepard as a lost lover, she's so bereft and emotional, even when Shepard is female and has no intimate relations with her whatsoever.

Can't you say that you are just friends with Ashley (or Kaiden) when talking to Liara? I heard a couple times that people accidentally terminated the Ash/Kaiden Romance in a conversation with Liara.

Cause she's a whinner ?  Too bad we could'nt romance Tali on ME 1, Liara was my 2nd choice, ASShley can go to hell, i always sacrifce her on Virmire.

After you get Liara, don't talk to her, go talk to Ashley and choose the renegade responses, then go talk to Liara and tell her you're not interested in her

Easiest option would be to not talk to her. If you do want to talk to her, then yes, you want to go Renegade when speaking to her. Either that, or you sacrifice her on Virmire.

And in all honest, Ash may have lost a bit of respect from me, I still understand her side of it.  It's just how she is; it's part of the character she is.  I may not look at her as a romance option ever again, but she'll always have a spot on the Crew at least for me.

Completely wrong. My canon male Shepard is an open atheist and he romances Ashley. He simply tells her she has a right to her beliefs and it's not his place to judge them (not the exact words, but that's the gist). She doesn't have a problem with non-religious people, simply those who judge her for being religious.

Well I compare Ashley to Kaiden. They are your squadmembers, should be the most loyal to you, Ashley doesn't act this way, she brings too much to the table, questions your judgement. This shouldn't happen between a common soldier and their CO, so Ash doesn't seem like a realistic character to me. Kaiden doesn't haul his baggage onto the Normandy like religion, poetry, distrust of aliens. I understand at one point Shepard can say "please, be informal" but the whole situation seems more professional with Kaiden. That's JMHO though so don't go spreading that around.

On-topic, I'm about to replay ME1 and was wondering about this, I wanted to be nice to Ashley and Liara without romancing them, I wonder what's worse; being renegade from the beginning, or leading them on and then turning them down at the love scene.

The first ME romance sucked, the script for them felt like they were forced and carried little emotion

ME2 is many times better than the first, i acctually like shepard in ME2, in the first he was just annoying

I just did a speedrun without talking to any of the crew for the entire game, and she still wanted to romance me. She is too easy.
