I think you may have missed an exclamation point.

WoT was off to a great start, got majorly bogged down in plodding divergent storylines, then started to pick up again before he died. Hopefully the final set will finish it off in style.

He died before he finished the series because he was milking fans of bad fantasy literature for all they were worth.

'Least he wasn't as bad as one Terry Goodkind....horrible author....

And Tolkien technically didn't finish - Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales etc.

I read them all once, but honestly, I wasn't terribly fond of them. There were some interesting things about them, and some parts I genuinely liked, but I think the whole series got stretched out quite a bit too long. I suppose a good deal of my problem was likely that there were only one or two characters I thought were at all sympathetic, and it tended to deal with the ones who weren't.

Still, having read the rest of it, I am at least a little curious to see how it ends.

Ehh, I've heard that a lot, but I think you're being harsh.  I actually blame his editor.  When an author is new, I've noticed their writing is a lot tighter and focused, but once they get established, they tend to get free reign to just write stuff.  'Cause they're experienced, so they should be allowed to write what they want, right?  The first three or four books were good, and moved the plot along well.  Five and six were slower, though six ended well.  Then it just gets steadily worse until book eleven, where it picks up some, but in there I remember reading the beginning of one, and, over a hundred pages in I realized all I had read was descriptions of women sitting in a room nervously smoothing their dresses.

Jordan had a gift for storywriting and world building that I think is nearly unmatched in recent years, but his writing tends to sprawl and his characterization is weak.

The divergent story lines is why it was so intense. I read and re-read them and they just keep getting better. Think of the time the stories span, and the years it took Jordan to write them.

There is no other series of books out there that has 12 consecutive novels plotting the same story line. Obviously becuase the main characters split up, you would have to explore each path.

Also the books chronicle the age progression of the characters, as the boys become Men, and the girls become Women.

Obviously the main character Rand (the Dragon) could not be sympathetic because sympathy would get him killed, and the same goes for his friends. Thats what made this series SO GOOD, the truth of it. Put yourself in his shoes, or any character of any book, what would you do. I would have done exactly the same thing. You must be strong, because only the strong survive.

Thats also whats is gonna be so great about DA. They dont cut corners and let it all play out. So if you are nice or mean there are repercussions and they might not all happen right away. This only increases the sense of awarness you have to use to play this game. This isnt your daddies rpg. So you have to up your game if you want to maximize the expierence. Obviously, it defeats the purpose of any game if you play on "easy"
