You do realize that you have to be on line and connected to your Steam account to set off line mode so that the client program can record the license status of your games for use in off line mode.

It's too late to switch to off line mode and in fact you won't be able to if the service is unavailable.

I also use Steam and have had it for years, but after having the service unavailable for a week, I learned and now only use it for games that require it.

Ubisoft's problem is only affecting new activations of digitally distributed games, users whos games are already activated or who bought them as a physical product aren't affected.

See, I was under the distinct impression that Ubisofts DRM required that you be online at all times while playing despite it being a singleplayer game. I think you didn't research the DRM Ubisoft implemented with ACII. You have to be connected and online in order to play the game. Your internet goes out, you can't play. Ubi's servers go down, you can't play. Thats the problem everyone is having with this DRM. Your arguement is moot.

Since I have no interest in the Assassin's Creed series I didn't read very deeply into the problem so I stand corrected.

What you describe is exactly how Steam behaves in on line mode. Ubisoft is still using SecuROM they just tightened up the licensing checks severely from what they normally do and apparently without considering how much additional load on the activation or license servers that would cause and now find themselves without enough server power to handle the load.

As EA learned from the Spore incident, we can only hope that Ubisoft learns from this incident.

I hope they do.  I had intended to buy Assassin's Creed 2, but now I'll hold off on it.

Yeah, if I were interested in the gtame I'd hold off too until Ubisoft gets things sorted out. Maybe by then they'll have also lowered the price. I might have been willing to pay $50 for a good game but there is no way I'm paying $60 for one.

Besides all the other bad choices they've made with COD:MW2 there's another reason to not like Infinity Ward and Activision. They started this $60 for a standard game price trend we are seeing. I'd be willing to pay $60 for a collectors or deluxe edition of a game but not for a standard version.

Count your blessings, I pay twice as much.

Even though I am subject to that DRM (Assassin's Creed 2) , I don't mind it too much. Perhaps thats because I have'nt had anyproblems...so far LOL as that is likely to change.

Since Ubisoft is based out of Montreol and France, their Communist ideals justify the subjective use of DRM that simply punishes the honest people who purchase the game. Ubisoft=Communism of Gameing
