Disclaimer: I know this build is sub-optimal. I have smacked the crap out of this game several times already, I can handle myself, no need to try and educate me about how I'm supposed to be doing things. Thanks!
My next character is going to be a rogue (torn between HN and CE origin) and inspired by Riordian's example, will wield a longsword and nothing else. I plan to max out all of my Rogue talents and then fill out the Duelist and Assassin specs as I have the talent points. Anything left over will get funelled into Archery.
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it worked for them. I'm especially curious to see if the Duelist talents work with only one weapon equipped. They should, yeah?
Also, aside from weirdness/oversight, does anyone have any theories on why Riordian only used one sword? I definitely clocked him using Dirty Fighting during the Denerim Siege so it's a safe bet he's a rogue... does he may be have a top secret specialization that doesn't appear elsewhere in the game?

My own (city elf) rogue uses a single dagger--and a buckler, admittedly, which is only a slight defense bonus. I put no points in Strength and no points in Combat Training, and her single dagger damage is high enough between her Dexterity and Cunning (with Lethality) that it's actually higher than the sum of both damage values when equipping two daggers at once (then again, I'm not using an Edge in one hand and a Thorn in the other, which might have something to do with it), so I don't have her dual-wield. She actually does fine (and hits surprisingly hard), but that's considering I didn't intend to make her a combat monster to begin with. She's a bard/ranger--I know she'd be a great assassin due to her high Cunning, but it doesn't fit the character concept. As an example, during the Spoiler Sequence in Broken Circle (before she was even a ranger), she did all right on Normal mode--I had to reload a few times, and use my head through the whole thing (which I didn't mind), but I wasn't forced to dip into my grenade reserves or anything drastic like that.
The duelist abilities all look like they'd work just fine with a single weapon--they might be more effective with two, but nothing suggests that they're incompatible with one. Two of them are just attack/defense boosts, one is a debuff that doesn't look like it even gets the character's weapon involved, and one is just supercrit mode. Aside from the debuff, I'm not even sure they only work in melee.
So my assessment is that judging from my own experiences on normal mode, you'll do just fine. Probably better than fine, as I gimped my rogue harder than you're gimping yours.

I had originally planned on using longswords, but your post reminded me (unless I'm mistaken) the Lethality/Cunning bonus is only for daggers... I guess I could focus on Strength as well, but that gives me something to consider. Perhaps a buckler shield isn't a bad idea in either case, I've never actually equipped one. I'm just looking to get a kind of swashbuckler feel for the character.

Lethality works on all weapons that use a strength modifier.

I also tried this out for **** and giggles, it works ok, the animations are pretty weak though, at least imo. I got bored of it pretty fast. If you are looking for an unusual but effective rogue build, you could try a twohander wielding backstabber, I had fun with that one.

@ Caak7i, I had forgotten the exact mechanics of Lethality, thank you. One less thing to worry about.
@ Relhart, I figured the animations might look a little funny, I'll see if I can't put up with it though or perhaps equip a buckler shield. I might try your 2H idea if my Strength is good enough, sounds like it would be oddly satisfying!

Two-handed weapons can backstab? I never noticed that.
As Caak7i said, Lethality allows you to use Cunning instead of Strength with any weapon, not just daggers. How daggers differ is that they get half their attribute bonus to damage from Strength (or Cunning) and the other half from Dexterity, whereas other melee weapons get all of their attribute bonus to damage from Strength (or Cunning).
Also, as far as a swashbuckler feel goes, the full-sized sword and dagger combo in fencing has a historical basis and fits well within the archetype.

for the 2h, there are actually axes that raise up the crit/backstab damages, The main problem however with 2H rogue would be the atk rating, you will always have to put some point in str or dex (dex got the def, str got the weapon requierment) to raise your hit rate. a dagger should be more flexible, a backstab with the chasind great maul on a marked man (with mark of death), well... with luck you'll crush is head off.
for the duellist I made some tests and :
1. duelling and keen defense work with anything, melee or ranged.
2. pinpoint striking needs a melee weapon to be activated, but if you switch after activation, you can use it with anything.
Aside from the debuff, I'm not even sure they only work in melee.

Bangin'.
Incidentally, with a high Dexterity/Cunning rogue that has no Dual Wield talents, is it worth using two daggers instead of one even if the sum of the damage ratings for the twin daggers is less than the damage rating wielding a single dagger?

with no DW ? I would say no, I mean you don't attack that much faster with 2 daggers, and with no dw talents you are just crippling you char, better staying single style (which make sense, if you are no ambidextrous, your second dagger is not efficient as a weapon).

I am using one weapon for my rouge, and she does more damage than zevran does with 2. She has no skills outside rogue, duelist and assassin. Not a lot of fun things to do as most skills are passive. I don't have the top 2 tiers yet either. very weak on the lower levels also till I hit lethality as well.

Really all depends on how your playing your rogue. Just remember assassin damage bonus comes from your Cunning. May wanna try Duelest/Ranger, one of my favorite characters is this setup with a two hander.
