There is an interesting article at GameBanshee about the RPG genre state during this period:

Eh...I'm not so sure of this. I didn't see anything in DA's marketing that "downplayed" the RPG genre. Heck, their primary marketing tag was "The Spiritual Sucessor to Baldur's Gate." How much more "RPG"-tagged can you get? Mass Effect was always a cross-over game where the RP elements were stealthed into an otherwise Action Game, just like Jade Empire was.

Alpha Protocol is rather problematic to include, because Sega supposedly sent it back to get more RPG quality in it. And I don't recall Oblivion nerfing the RPG mentioned in their marketing either. It's not like they hid "Elder Scrolls IV" in the title (Even though I'd say in that instance, they hid the role-playing elements of the GAME). And not only that, but all the publications gushed over all the 'role-playing immersion' the physics system and new dialogue choices would give us.

So I'm not seeing this. Especially when you add in that *the* money genre is still the MMORPG, like em or hate em. Developers make the most money on them. So minimizing "RPG?" I don't see it.

I think it's more that more games are including the level of story and character customization that once was almost solely the purview of RPGs, so the line is blurrier than ever before.

I agree with you here; I honestly don't see any reduction in the RPG elements in DA.

It's all about opinions, but I have seen quite some traditional RPG players feeling this way, and if you want to see how a RPG can become a FPS, read the postmortem of Bioshock from the developers of that game (and ME2 has a similar story):

I think that this article is 100% backwards.

The RPG genre isn't fading, it's leeching into all the other genres. RPG fusions are all the rage right now. I mean, look at Borderlands, GTA, and so many more. They all incorporate many role playing elements into their gameplay.

I also don't really see how Dragon Age came up

This is very much true. ME (and even Jade Empire before it) were meant in part to tap cross-over markets because people have started buying action games with RPG elements. JE and ME simple did it the opposite way.

And as I said, there was nothing "minimizing" RPG in Dragon Age. That's simply nonsense. If anything, as we've talked about on other threads, the EA shareholders were panicky because they didn't get how a Single Player PC -based RPG could make money. Especially when it was being marketed as primarily for that platform. That article is off in never-never land. This isn't anything like the days before Fallout and Baldur's Gate, when people thought "RPG" was a dead genre.

But Enix tried to to MMORPG's as well. I'm not sure if it was successful but WoW is still the top MMORP today. Maybe that's why they are trying to make another MMO...

I don't think the RPG genre's dying at all.

It is just that MMO's are taking it over. And much as I enjoy them, I do play WoW, but I sure love being able to play a game and NOT be constantly challenged to PvP or duel every dweeb on my same server. Nor constantly invited to join somebody's guild, listen to endless gold-farmer spam, etc.

Of course the money's in MMO's. Game companies can collect a monthly fee from you. They've become like cable companies and electric utilities, now they can suck you dry every month.

This is so tempting & lucrative I was starting to get worried nobody was going to make anything OTHER than MMOs ... thank the Maker DA:O is here.

So true, i was also scared that the traditional single player RPG was gonna die to MMO. Hell i tried wow and got a bit hooked on it for 1 years which was enough to bore me to death after that i got back to playing baldur gate 1&2 fable or w/e singleplayer rpg i could find(and you never get tired of those game lol) for a while till DA/ME came along to sastify my craving. Then ME2 and now DA:Awakening. Bioware is reviving the RPG genre and i hope other company will follow them.

I truly hope the RPG genre is not going to be blended with the FPS, yes i think ME2 went too far in the wrong direction, if i wanted a FPS i could have picked from quite a few choices. I played WoW for 4 years, been clean for 2 now and i will never go back, there is really nothing in WoW i find attractive anymore. See in WoW in order to do some of the interesting content i must deal with 4 to 24 other people, and this interesting content is where the best gear (WoW is a gear dependant game) comes from, so in a PvP situation unless your one of the LUCKY, POPULAR, players you may never get the gear to be competetive in a PvP situation. No one says if you play as i did on a non PvP server that you have to PvP, but that leaves the only options grinding, doing daily quests, and pretty much standing around LFG to do X instance, all of this can be yours for 15 dollaras a month, ill pass. Like i said i am clean now for 2 years just got my new WoW Anon coin.

I surely hope that the single player RPG experience is not on its way out because that would mean if i wanted to play a good RPG i would have to go play with the LCD (lowest common denominator). I would not mind if DAO2 took a page from Saints Row 2 in that the coop mode allowed the players to do every mission together (literally start to finish). I would like to see maybe a coop version where you can form a group and do the Oz quests with up to 3 other people, but to require me to FIND 3 other people to do the Oz or any quest for that matter, i am done.
