So I am one to not go for "standard" or "cookie-cutter" builds. I have played all the classes and I really had fun on Insanity with this unconventional build. Sure it's not the most damaging, but call me crazy...I like being tactical and using powers than just being ZOMG 733t sniper. Anyway here is the build then I'll go into my thinking and tactics.

Disruptor Ammo - 10 at set to Squad
Cryo Ammo - 0
Tactical Cloak  - 10 Set to Assassination Cloak
Incinerate - 10 - Set to Area version
AI Hacking - 10 - Set to Improved
Operative -10 set to Agent
Bonus Power - Neural Shock - 1

Squad Disruptor Ammo - I have this set because...to me this is a no-brainer. I cannot figure out why people do not use this more often. yes it does more damage to shield and synthetics but I dont use it soley for that. I use it for the 6 second overheat of weapons...if the enemy cant shoot then you dont get damage...simple I know but I am still surprised no one talks about this effect much. With 2 teammates using either tepest or vindicator I found that the chance of the overheat happening is fairly high.

Assassination Cloak - Again a no brainer since you will be using your sniper rifle all the time you need the extra bonus to get that one shot kill or at least get rid of the defenses and some health in one shot.

Incinerate - This is the bread and butter nuke. I keep it at the blast (area) version because I think its better for CC (if you hit people with just red bars) and for getting more targets down to lower armor.  It also damages shield and barriers though not by 2.4 but still does damage.

here is where it gets unconventional

Improved AI Hacking and 1 point in Neural Shock -

These may be situational but I dont play or think of them like that. Neural shock is a great one point wonder power. Its got a short cooldown so you are not going to be affecting your cloak and it stuns any organic by 5sec. this is just for one point. you combine this with the tech duraction upgrade and agent and you can get mroe than 6sec of stun. The best part is that they usually get stuned standing upright so you can get a quick kill with a sniper headshot or hand cannon headshot. Or you can do what I usually do...and keep them there and let the squad do their thing. AI hacking is not as useless as people say. You just need to max it. Again with the tech duration upgrade and Agent you can have a pretty strong geth ally for 16+ seconds.

-Ok I know that some of you guys will bash this build  because of no warp or AP ammo or say why not just be an engineer...but let me go further. With this build you just need a shift in ideas to make it dominate. You dont need warp ammo or AP ammo to be bad@##. You already get the widow that will do much damage. If they dont die and are in red bar...shock them and move to the next. With AI hacking I dont care that I can kill a geth pretty easy once its in the red...just dont think like that...get one in the red then hack it for an ally (I like to think of a really awesome combat drone) I didnt pick Engineer because I like the cloak and the widow and I dont like to spam a couple powers all day long

I usaully start a fight cloaked and shoot the toughest person. If its a tight group I hit with area incinerate first and clean up with shocks and widow fire. With the squad using disruptor ammo you will eat through sheilds but more importantly you will cause many enemies to have their weapons overheated...thats 6 seconds of them out of the fight.  What else is good with this builld is that the powers chosen dont ruin assassination cloak so this is still the best way to do damage.

-I really had a fun time with this build on insanity and thought I would share it. I welcome any opinions or thoughts... and sorry for any spelling.

What was your reason for Agent? I picked it too, just wanted to know why you did.

This isn't an unconventional build. This is pretty much what you should be retraining to on any synthetic heavy mission (i.e. Haestrom). It only costs 2500 eezo.

After doing Haestrom that way I've just respecced again for 7500 eezo to Reave (no Incinerate), Heavy Cryo and bringing Jack along with squad Warp ammo for the Collector Ship. And I plan on respeccing after that for the Illium missions.

But yeah Haestrom was made easy by shooting off shields/armour and hacking Geth Primes and Destroyers which then go on to draw literally *all* fire for 9 whole seconds. And the cherry on the cake is that you can hack again immediately afterwards. You can literally just stand out of cover with your wang dangling in the breeze, firing your SMG with total impunity.

I've tried maxed AI hacking before, and I prefer area hacking.
Miranda's Overload + a few sprays with the tempest, then bam .. you have a few new allies.

It's interesting to be sure, but I don't know how well it synergies with sniping.
I found myself just using the tempest (and incinerate) all the time vs. synthetics.

I don't really like the area version of AI Hacking because there were way too many times where I was hacking too many enemies at once. Your hacked mechs have nothing to fire at or too little to fire at so they just stand around for 9 seconds. Shooting down your own hacked mechs takes ages because you give them a tonne of free shields so I kind of want to avoid having to do that. I'd prefer to hack 1 mech at a time and have them get shot down or shoot something else down. Then hack another mech. etc. Its easy to go from mech to mech like that because your pet takes all the fire so you can shoot down more shields and prime another mech for hacking.

Well, the improved version isn't that much better than the area version targeting 1 foe.

Just don't bother stripping their defenses if you're hacking 1 target at a time.

Besetment- I agree, I tried Area hacking but didnt like it for that reason.

Also, I get the idea of respecing when not on synthetic heavy missions but I hate respecing...but that is just the roleplayer in me. I liked using reave instead of incinerate but I found myself spamming it instead of using my cloak and rifle. In fact I really dont use incinerate all too often...just when I start fighting if people are grouped or for those times for husks and krogan or low on widow ammo. I actually at first played through with only 1 point in incinerate and maxed cryo ammo for the heavy version. I found it was fun with the tempest when I was done sniping for some oh crap moments. I changed to the build above since it just felt "awesome". The powers were more to compliment using the cloak and sniper rifle instead of overshadowing it.

Tlazolteotl - I like the improved because you only have to strip one mech...you go for the prime or destroyer right off. You can strip the defenses pretty fast if you focus on just one...then you get that mech on your side for about 16 seconds. By that time its taken out some of its pals and gotten killed in the process...like a super combat drone.

Well roleplay is roleplay. You know how it goes. You don't need to respec as much as I like to but its cheap and its there so you can try out different combinations of skills and see what works best in what situations.

I kind of like to approach the game a bit like a timed puzzle. Looking at levels in terms of the ideal places to stage attacks, waypoint squadmates etc. Working out skill combinations that work optimally on any given mission and then trying to do the whole thing in the fastest time. But thats just me.

I like this build albeit a little typical;

Heavy Disrupter Ammo

Squad Cryo Ammo

Assassination Cloak

Assassin

Heavy Warp Ammo
