All it was was just Dancing with Wolves in Space.  Seriously, I knew exactly how the movie was going to pan out during the first 5 minutes of it.

We've seen it all before.  Some guy is victimizing a group of people, he gets stuck with these people and then he fights to protect them...yawn.

The only reason this movie sold so well is because of the flashy special effects.  Morons don't care about plot substance and are easily amused by flashy light shows.

If you haven't seen this movie, consider yourself lucky and don't waste any money watching this turd.

I think Avatar's critical acclaim and box office records just prove that people will like any piece of crap on film so long as it has good special effects.

Take away the special effects and Avatar is basically just a rehash of The Last Samurai.

I think you should spend a little more time being positive. All your threads/posts have been about how much something sucked. It's like a complain-o-coaster.

IMO Dances With Wolves was a better movie, but you gotta admit that the special effects, 3D, and Sigourney Weaver were very cool. Was the plot predictable? Very. But, you can say that for the majority of movies that come out these days. I enjoyed it for what it was, a very entertaining and cool looking movie. I didn't go in thinking it was going to be some enlightening experience. You don't need a PhD to watch movies do you?

Avatar gets the same kind of pass that certain video games get. The story wasn't great, but the visuals were neat and the world building was cool enough to keep me interested. It was fun while it was on screen, but it didn't rock my world.

The story wasn't good, but the biology and effect were awesome

The whole point of the movie was to test the viability of 3D movies, not to tell a good story. It's like how Crysis was basically made to advance the boundaries of computer graphics and every reviewer gave it a 9 out of 10 despite the fact that the gameplay and story were pretty generic.

Yes I agree the special effects are good but a well polished turd is still a turd.

Well there is a fine line between unoriginal complete cop out, and old-school. Jim Cameron is just old school. No way around that. Avatar is still my second favorite movie of all time.

Yeah, I always wondered what the big deal was about Crysis too.  I guess I'm just not the kind of person who needs more than just good graphics to enjoy something.

Yes it did suck. What makes it worse, is hearing how great it is all the time.

Pushing the limits of graphics is kind of important since it helps future games create more immersive experiences.

It's the same thing with pushing special effects in movies. It certainly helps to have a good writing like in Cameron's previous movies, Aliens and Terminator for example, but if it wasn't for movies of questionable quality that helped push the boudaries of special effects like the Star Wars prequels, Independence Day, Armageddon, etc., we probably wouldn't have great movies like District 9.

They also happen to be the movies that say that "primitive" cultures can't beat the evil white guys without help from a white guy.

This.
And since it worked, we will see a flood of 3D movies of the same scale coming up for the next year. Then people will need something more advanced.

To be fair, that actually is how the resource industry operates. So yeah, the white man is kind of evil.

I disagree, at least with Twilight you can have fun with it's s***ty-ness.  Avatar is just meh.  Lore is uninspired and solely reliant on "ohh purdy colors."  Final battle is cool, but sitting through 2 hours of boring trash is bleh.

Fixed.
Now I must go and whip myself for commiting such a crime as forgetting pancakes on a list of things that suck.
