The small text in ME2 on my 27" SD TV has made me realize
it is definitely time for me to invest in an HDTV. I just need some help from
you guys! I have little knowledge of the HDTV world all I know is my budget and
what I will be using this TV for. I am looking to spend about 600 bucks at the
most and also would like a 40-42” flat screen for my man cave. Now I don’t know
what type to get! I have a few questions:

1) LCD or Plasma?

2) Is burn in still an issue for newer plasma TVs?

3) 1080p or 720p? Does it make a difference for a TV of this
size?

4) Will lag be a problem?

5) any suggestions for specific TVs would be great!

Go with LCD, plasma TVs only work right for a few years. If you can, go with 1080p, makes a big difference even on a small PC monitor.

Also look for sales, a $1000 TV might be selling for $600.

On second thought, I think the 360 might not be able to do 1080p, so if your only getting it for gaming that's something to consider.

I got a 32 inch 720p for 400 from Newegg. It was a Refurbished, but it works better than even some brand new ones I've seen.

For the 360, if you go for a 1080p, you need a VGA cable to see that level (Or HDMI if yours is an Elite) otherwise, you can only go up to 720 I believe.

Right now, a lot of games don't really support 1080p, at least not the level they should. So it's up to you if you want to spend upwards of 50% more for a same-size TV, for the 720p-1080p difference. On the Flip side, any 360 game running at native 1080p is Always running that, so having lower resolution is essentially "Wasting" resources. Since unlike a PC game, there is no benefit in performance.

Well, as for HDTV's, I would definitely stick with LCD's, or maybe the newer LED's.

A few brand names I tend to stick with are

Vizio: Good quality for the price.

Samsung: Higher priced but great contrast ratio for the darker scened games and shows.

Philips: Close to par with Samsung.

Sony: Their higher end TV's are pretty good, but for the price you can usually find another brand comparable at less cost.

I would steer clear of RCA HDTV's though. I work in retail electronics and have seen a lot of issues and returns with their TV's.

1) price range dictates lcd but a good plasma will always be better than lcd. deeper blacks better colors.

2) not on a good plasma. unless you leave the same pic on for a long time. i've been selling tv's for around 10 years and playing games on my plasma for about 5 yrs no burn in here.

3) Have not had any probs with lag on my tv.

4) sony good but $$$. pioneer makes best plasma but again $$$. Just keep your eyes open for sales.

A couple clarifications:

An LED is merely a type of LCD tv with LED backlighting instead of fluorecent.

All Xbox consoles have HDMI (at least since 2007). If you have an older model, then bravo for avoiding red ring of death for that long!

For a tv smaller than 37-40 inches the difference between 720p and 1080p is inconsequencial unless you are sitting very close (4 feet or less).

Cheers from the tech fairy.:wizard:
