I try to load my auto save on my character but all I get is a message saying "The save file appears to be damaged and cannot be loaded." can anyone help me or am I going to have to start from another save? (The most recent save is VERY old.)

Unfortunately you can't do anything about it. Apparently its a common game-breaking issue they tend to ignore.
