It is irrelevant that the alien-eating was not *that* important to the plot, it is still relevant as the gang plays a role in the mini-economy of the district and in giving weapons to the protegonist. The point is that the gang could have been any other nationality or color, which means it is rather silly to take it as an attack on Nigerians or blacks. As I said earlier, it would have been just as believable had they been Chinese, Brazilian or Samoan (if the setting for the film had been in one of those countries). Reality is al of this cultures have, at some point or other, thought that eating/using certain animals in rituals or medicine can make you stronger (tiger balls anyone?). Does that not mean that if you portray that in a movie then the entirety of that culture is summarized by that, nor that it is a prevalent aspect of its modern culture. But if it happened in the past, it is equally likely that were Aliens to appear on earth the supersticious of every race and nationality would come up with their own ideas.
@Panderfringe: What? A film set in S. Africa is automatically racist regardless of what it is trying to say about an issue? You might want to go back and look for your logic, it seems to have dropped off your trail of thought there.
Just watched District 9

No, that would be Moon and I'd rate Star Trek and Avatar as better Sci-fi than District 9.
I pretty much agreed with your opinion, but Avatar better sci-fi than District 9 ? it is pretty much the same. it is just a hippie environmentalist bullcrap disguised poorly in a movie format.

I do not see how it would not be racist, taking place in South. Africa.
You know, apartheid? Yeah? Yeah.
Explain how the movie taking place in SA is racist? I was under the impression we'd gotten over the apartheid thing, you sound like one of our politicians.

I saw it in a plane on my way from Spain to the US (or the other way; I cannot remember) and I enjoyed it a lot, truth be told.
It´s not a deep, enlightening film; if you want that you should go to Angelopoulos Eternity and a Day and stuff like that.
