You have been warned. The game will not start after installation patch 1.01 on Vista 64. You will be force to uninstall the game and play version 1.0 for the time being. I suspect it has something to do with the secure-rom proctection and the new daorigins.exe.

DA:O doesn't use SecureROM afaik. Also, I never had problems running it on Vista 64, before or after the patch.

The game runs fine if you have the updated VC++ files, but the shortcut icon in Games Explorer does not, and anyone trying to say it does is simply lying. I've installed on 3 different Windows 7 machines (all 64 bit) with the same shortcut error. Game runs fine, but the Games Explorer icon will not work anymore.

I also wanted to chime in and say that I had the problem on 32-bit SP2 Vista but just downloaded the Visual C++ and it worked for me.

Here's the link again:  http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

Fenna, update the Visual C++ files everyone is linking. They built the installer with a newer version that for some reason wasn't compatible with the files its installing now. After doing this, go to the actual install folder and use the shortcut there to start the game, as it won't matter what you do to the Games Explorer icon, they messed that up real good.

Does it kill the save games? Will I have to restart?

That's the usual with my other games, ... but I hope not here. This is a very, very involved story, lol

I just tested the DVD Play link and it does work, but as I said previously the Game Explorer link is the only thing not working with the patch. So really, don't listen to anyone else saying it broke their game totally. Its very small issues that will be fixed in the future, as the Games Explorer icon problem isn't even a registry issue its a simple GDF file issue.

You can fix the Games Explorer Shortcut by installing the older gdf file from the disk, I'm not sure if it changes anything though, as this file (the one on the disk) is larger in size compared to the old one (By about 20kb).

The poster means that the game wont start through the exe files that are shortcutted in the "games" section and pinned in the start menu. Any short cuts of those copied and placed on the desktop dont work either. This is due to a corrupt DLL file.

Which btw, you can easily replace with an older one. Just insert your disk, browse the content and open "apps_ship" with winrar, inside is a folder named "bin_ship" in that folder is a dll file named "daoriginsgdf.dll" just extract only that file into the following command path.

C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship

if it asks you to overwrite, select yes. And oila, you can play the game again through the old shortcuts in games and start/task bars.

A second easy way is to just make a new shortcut and insert the following in the target area.

"C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe"

Yep, that's what I mean. I'm just scared they changed something in that file (size difference is very very small though) So I made a backup of the 1.01 file before I replaced it.

I'm running Vista 64-bit Ultimate Edition. I downloaded the patch and broke my game. I tried running directly from my install folder. Still broken. I tried installing the C++ files. Still broken. I tried replacing the dll file. Still broken. I'm currently reinstalling the game.

I'm running Vista 64 Ultimate too, and it ran fine before *and* after the patch. I think the problem is you need to update your Visual C runtime packages. Most folks who game on Steam get these updates automatically whenever installing a game (I do).

Otherwise, you'll have to get them off of MS's site.
