As much fun as it is to use it kinda sucks when you are too close to a target and the bullets go through them instead of killing them. When I'm using a slower shotun it sucks more since by the time I can fire again I'm taking damage, the assult shotgun you pick up during game play tends to be better for use when this happens.
This has happened a few times to me but not often.

Well, it never happened to me.
To make sure you don't get shafted when it fails, never done for me. Use the Claymore and hold down the firebutton. Melee quickly when you here a reload sound so that you automatically fire another barrage at the opponent in a rather fast way. Combine that with Biotic cooldowns and you will be an amazing monstuuur.
