Still don't understand Paragon/Renegade points

I've also read that your paragon/renegade score is based on the number of possible points per mission (the maximum I heard was 2,500 but a full bar is 2,000 or 80%).
I have also heard people giving advice about delaying missions to gain higher paragon/renagade scores. I guess my question is: What does that Renegade/Paragon bar even mean. Obviously that bar is supposed to be there for my benefit, but what information does it give me.
I was a little frustrated on my first play-through since I played the game the way I wanted to play, but was denied access to several conversation options. Not only that but I missed on some fundimental game features (like being able to choose Mornith as a teammate)
On my next playthrough I made an attempt to go full Paragon making choices that were rediculous or "out of character" just to make sure I had enough of those stupid paragon points to be involved in the decision macking process later in the game.
I guess I just don't understand what is to be gained from railroading players into specific play styles to access the games content. It just seems odd that the only way to get anywhere in this game is to be a jackass or a saint, anything inbetween just gets you ignored.

No charm or intimidate any more. I guess that's makes the difference. In ME1 you could manage a nice mix of the two, but since they took it of us now we have to be either a goody goody or a total prat. It's not very fair I'll admit, but I play paragon so it doesn't bother me too much.
In the first game your charm/intimidate was based off your paragon or renegade score.
So you wouldn't be able to add points to it unless you had majority one or the other.
In ME1 I managed to get my paragon to 100% and my renegade to about 35%.
In ME2 I managed to get my paragon to 95% and my renegade to 25%/
Not that big of a difference.
Mass effect has always been a game of one side or the other, and it sucks. But eh, they aren't gunna change the entire system for ME3.

Renegade - you're a jerk.
In my opinion it's too rigid and not always clear. Sometimes I got Renegade points when I thought I was picking an "okay" option. For instance you get Renegade points if you ask Kelly to have dinner with you. I don't know if it's because she's a junior officer or what.

You get an equal amount of renegade and paragon points (5 each I think).

If you really want to min/max then check out this page:

It is possible to get 100% Paragon and about 50% Renegade without using a save-game editor. If anything, I think ME2 is a bit more forgiving than ME1 when it comes to playing a "balanced" character, but the key difference is the difficulty scaling as the game progresses, which confuses a lot of people. Also, there are a lot of non-obvious conversation options to gain "freebie" points.

Example with totally arbitrary numbers:
10 missions started, 1000 total Renegade points possible, 800 renegade points acquired, 80% renegade "check" requirement -- check passed.
20 missions started, 2000 total Renegade points possible, 1000 renegade points acquired, 80% renegade "check" requirement -- check failed.
[edit -- the bar, however, does not show you your percentage of the total possible to that point; I'm not sure WHAT it shows you, but more likely your 'balance' of some arbitrary number of points]
Importing an ME character grants a significant bonus for early game checks, less significant later on.

In-fact it was actually easier to unlock the options then in my full paragon run.

I want to see what happens if someone picks EVERY renegade response throughout the trilogy while transferring saves.
In the end, he would have been a jerk to every person, done no loyalty missions, gotten almost everyone killed, never romanced anyone.
All I can imagine is that at the end of ME3, while all his party members and allies are celebrating he will sit creepily in a dark corner while he sips from a can of beer.

He'd have gotten everyone killed, self included. Because if they're not loyal they can't catch you because they don't survive the fall.Fat Headed Wolf wrote...

You just answered your own question. Most players except the hardcore RPers use Shepard as an extension of themselves. This includes choices you would make if you were given a limited set.
If you do not make out of character choices, the ending is the one YOU as a person selected, without gaming the system and everything.
Sure you might end up with Tali or Legion dead or Miranda or Jack dead but thats them consequences.
Think of it as a simple form of psyche test with a result that some are unlikely to be too happy about (What? I'm a jerk?)
