James Cameron probably doesn't care anyway. So his movie didn't win best picture. He's still laughing all the way to the bank. Let Kathryn Bigelow at least get a trophy for her achievement.
On a side note, I find it hilarious she was once married to Cameron. I can just picture her meeting him on the street and giving him a good ribbing over the loss.

I haven't seen the Hurt Locker, but I can say I would give best picture to many other movies before Avatar. Movies are about plot and creativity, not just pretty colors.

Riight. Batman: Arkham Asylum disproves that straight away, as does Dawn of War. Oh, and Company of Heroes.UBER GEEKZILLA wrote...

http://en.wikipedia....me_of_the_year List of a lot of Game of the Year winners.
Yes. Avatar will be remembered as the most colossal waste of money on a film. I seem to remember a lot of reviews panning Avatar or saying it's really not that good - professional reviews AND movie goer reviews, that is.hurt locker will be forgoten 5 years from now and avatar will be remebered forever
The only reason it'll be remembered is because it's one of the most expensive (or is it THE most expensive) films produced to date, and that it's probably helped popularise 3D more than previous films.

Let me guess. You wanted Avatar to win. Avatar is nothing special. Nice special effects but that's not what movies are about.

I wouldn't say Avatar revolutionized anything.
Maybe some animation related things? I coud see that.

It sure seems like CG has gotten worse, though. In the early days with big budget movies, the focus was making CG as realistic as possible, so you had a hard time telling when it was CG and when it wasn't. But in recent movies despite the improved technology it's like they don't try as hard.
Look at Wolverine's claws in the most recent movie for a perfect example.

In terms of animation it was an impressive entry, but I'm not sure about a revolution, we've seen realistic animated films going back to Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within back in 2001, at least that's the oldest one I can recall. Beowulf is also a notable film utilizing this sort of approach. Of course in terms of both reception and quality, the visuals in Avatar are an improvement, but far more of an evolution than a revolution.

This.
And Cameron's amazing technical achievements were just so much more impressive (to me) back with Abyss, T2 and Titanic. Avatar was...
you know, I've wasted enough breath on this.
In any case I wasn't a fan of any of the Best Picture nominees - ok, not true. Up and District 9 were amazing, and while I've not seen it, Up In The Air looks like it could be good.
But honestly none of those films had a chance.

But in the end I know what movies are better and there will always be controversy in any decision made at that level.

The Hurt Locker won best picture in a relatively weak year for movies. District 9, Inglourious Basterds, and The Hurt Locker were the only movies that would have been considered in most years, IMO.
