I haven't seen Avatar, but I thought the Hurt Locker was a good movie. Before anyone says I'm a war movie buff I'll note I dislike most films held as shining examples of the genre.

James Cameron probably doesn't care anyway. So his movie didn't win best picture. He's still laughing all the way to the bank. Let Kathryn Bigelow at least get a trophy for her achievement. :P Her movies are usually pretty good and get near zero mainstream recognition.

On a side note, I find it hilarious she was once married to Cameron. I can just picture her meeting him on the street and giving him a good ribbing over the loss.

Yes a coughed up script of Dances with Wolves(only with blue natives instead of American natives) deserves best picture.

I haven't seen the Hurt Locker, but I can say I would give best picture to many other movies before Avatar. Movies are about plot and creativity, not just pretty colors.

Avatar won 3 awards, all of which it absolutely deserved. It absolutely did not deserve any of the others. You don't win best picture for pretty visuals, you win best art direction and visual effects, which it did.

Riight. Batman: Arkham Asylum disproves that straight away, as does Dawn of War. Oh, and Company of Heroes.

Yes. Avatar will be remembered as the most colossal waste of money on a film. I seem to remember a lot of reviews panning Avatar or saying it's really not that good - professional reviews AND movie goer reviews, that is.
The only reason it'll be remembered is because it's one of the most expensive (or is it THE most expensive) films produced to date, and that it's probably helped popularise 3D more than previous films.

Let me guess. You wanted Avatar to win. Avatar is nothing special. Nice special effects but that's not what movies are about.

The only thing that I can agree with the OP about is that Hurt Locker was not a very good movie. The main character was so terribly unbelievable that no amount of good acting could rescue the film. Add to that a rather uninspired pot and setting, and this movie can be tossed onto the pile of 'generic war crud'. I'm not sure why it gt any awards at all. Easily the most overrated film of the year next to Avatar.

I wouldn't say Avatar revolutionized anything.

I suppose I could see some animation stuff.

It sure seems like CG has gotten worse, though. In the early days with big budget movies, the focus was making CG as realistic as possible, so you had a hard time telling when it was CG and when it wasn't. But in recent movies despite the improved technology it's like they don't try as hard.

Look at Wolverine's claws in the most recent movie for a perfect example.

In terms of animation it was an impressive entry, but I'm not sure about a revolution, we've seen realistic animated films going back to Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within back in 2001, at least that's the oldest one I can recall. Beowulf is also a notable film utilizing this sort of approach. Of course in terms of both reception and quality, the visuals in Avatar are an improvement, but far more of an evolution than a revolution.

This.

And Cameron's amazing technical achievements were just so much more impressive (to me) back with Abyss, T2 and Titanic.  Avatar was...

you know, I've wasted enough breath on this.

In any case I wasn't a fan of any of the Best Picture nominees - ok, not true.  Up and District 9 were amazing, and while I've not seen it, Up In The Air looks like it could be good.

But honestly none of those films had a chance.

I dont need awards to tell me what movies I like and will see over again. Sure it be nice to see some movies get the attention they deserve instead of some of the tripe that wins.

But in the end I know what movies are better and there will always be controversy in any decision made at that level.

I thought the camera that was built that let him see the actual scene and actors as they would appear in the film was neat.

District 9 stole a bit of Avatar's flair, IMO. The CGI in it was just as good and impressive. Avatar just had an abundance of it and lots of bright colors.

The Hurt Locker won best picture in a relatively weak year for movies. District 9, Inglourious Basterds, and The Hurt Locker were the only movies that would have been considered in most years, IMO.

Yes, District 9's CG was really well done.

I'm fine with hurt locker winning best picture over avatard. but QT should have got best original screenplay, that movie was sublime. his best in years.

If you are going to argue for a movie deserving to be a best picture and be sci-fi please pick District 9 as it had a much better script then Avatar and dealt with real social topics. Avatar was a good movie. However, it was HONKING derivative as hell. It should not have been nominated for best picture at all. I found myself liking it much more then I wanted to but I still realize it is not the end all be all.

Moon was pretty solid as well. Sam Rockwell is great.
