Companions never stop switching weapons

Yesterday was a day full of annoyances. Why ? Well, I was trying to kill the Asari sleeper and commando at Peak 15. I found myself a nice spot for singularity, which would draw enemies asunder for a very short time, allowing me to target them individually with warp and stasis, before they are drawn together. But here's the thing - it's impossible to use your AI controlled companions, because they never stop switching weapons and the power menu always says "switching", so they will never cast, wasting valuable milliseconds.

This weapon switching is all the more annoying, because I never use weapons in RPGs, I rely on spells only, be it real spells like in NWN2 or spell like abilities like in Kotor2 and ME. I wanted to know what the hell was going on with the companions so I turned around and looked at them. First, they draw the sniper rifles, the standard weapons I set for all companions to prevent them from doing any damage, since I don't want them to kill enemies by the use of weapons. Now something weird happened - happens every time companions draw weapons after conversations - they actually holstered the sniper rifles again and switched to pistols! Great! Don't you get it, you morons? You are wasting valuable time! But that's not all! After switching to pistols, Leira actually holstered the pistol again and switched to the shotgun, wasting even more time! They never stop switching weapons, they can do it for hours!

I actually made an experiment and was just standing there, waiting for my companions to finish switching weapons. Just wanted to know how long it would take for them to become ready for casting spells. The enemies killed me BEFORE they finished switching their stupid weapons! Stupid AI!

I did some testing and found out that the AI will decide in favour of the best weapon available (either shotgun or pistol), so I gave my companions Kessler IV pistols and a Storm I shortguns, forcing them to select pistols right away. I also selected pistols as their primary weapons prior to the fight, even though I don't like it, since they do too much damage with pistols, even on hardcore difficulty. So now they drew pistols right away, but the power menu still showed "Switching" for hours. What the hell? I turn around and look at my companions and what do I behold? The idiots actually re-holster the pistols after drawing them! Then they draw them again and holster them again! They do it at least 3 times before they are finally ready for spell casting, wasting at least 3 seconds of valuable time! What the hell is going on with this game?!

I think we can all agree that the overall AI in ME1 is inconsistent at best. That being said, if you manage their weapon switching yourself, that should minimize the problem.

That's bizarre... My companions will never switch weapons except when they get hit with Sabotage. Apparently this makes them switch weapons because they're programmed not to stand there clicking a useless gun. I actually hate this because they typically have no ranks in any other weapon (not to mention I never bother modding their weapons except for their primary weapon) and would be FAR more useful using their other talents instead.

I can't manage their weapon switching, because the power menu says "Switching" and clicking a weapon does nothing, the companions ignore all directives by the player until they finish switching. This nonsense only occurs after conversations (Asari sleeper, Benezia etc.), very annoying, this spoilt the entire fun of the fight with Benezia, it's actually the best fight in the game and I also got the perfect strategy, but the companion AI is so stupid that nothing works, cause they never follow your orders, just stand their holstering and unholstering the same weapons, while being killed by enemies.

Well, quite frankly, I don't really care about what or how they use their weapons. Once I gain control of the Normandy, I typically go to each squad mate's locker and supply them with the necessary equipment as well as mod their weapons if needed. After that, they're completely on their own. I generally set their AI to Active so that they use all available powers. I swear, if your character's level is high enough (58-60) and you do that, you will reach a point where you don't even have to actually participate in firefights. Just watch your teammates slaughter the enemies while laughing. Obviously, this doesn't work when playing on higher difficulties. But you get the idea.

I guess you'll just have to live with it, though. I've played ME1 to an unhealthy degree and despite that, I can very well admit the game has a very (below average) AI.

I have recently noticed this and I believe it has to do with how many points in a certain weapon specialization that determines this..

For ex wrex will by default go with AR unless you subside the points and put them into shotguns, it would be nice if there was some fix to this..:pinched:
