I'm on my 4th playthrough of the game and just noticed something. I just rescued Riordan, and he mentions how he can't do the joining ritual because a drop of arch demon blood is needed. If that is the case, what did the first Grey Warden's use to become Grey Warden's? Since they were fighting Dumat, the very first archdemon, how did they get his blood for a joining? I apologize if this is explained elswhere, but i've not found any info on it.
Grey Warden plothole?

The First Blight lasted 90 years. I assume the archdemon was killed multiple times during the Blight, only to be reborn in another darkspawn, since there were no Grey Wardens. One can assume that, at some point, desperation prompted the warriors battling the archdemon and darkspawn to ingest some of the archdemon/darkspawn blood -- becoming "one with the enemy" as it were -- and the secret of the taint was discovered.

Riordan also mentions that the Archdemon will be reborn any time it's killed by a non-Grey Warden. Dumat was killed more than once.

That is most likely, and I like that explanation. I just wish it wasn't up to speculation. You'd think after the joining you'd bed given some schooling on Grey Warden's, or at least through out the game. In fact, I dare say it would have been a bit better if Alistair was a bit older and more experienced and good sort of "mentor" you throughout the game, and bit less snarky/whiny.
