I am working my way through my 8th gameplay now and I still love the game. I do have to wonder if the universal cool down timer makes sense logically, and gameplay wise.

Logically it seems that combat, tech, biotic abilitiles should have had their own timer at the very least. Why is it that using overload stops you from using biotic powers or a concussive blast?

Gameplay wise  in my opinion, it seems that it prevents the use of many of the other powers. For example - I hardly bothered with throw or shockwave or even pull because of the timer. There are piles of posts that suggest taking a none activated power as your bonus power for that very reason.

I'm thinking each of the abilities on the character at least should have had it's own cool down to prevent the above. You could have then charged at someone and used a few other abilities while charge powers up. This would make the barrier type abilities more valued too.

At the very least IMHO, each of the subsets should have had their own timer for the player ( and keep the global for npcs if needed).  So then you could use an overload and a warp for example on 2 seperate enemies.

I think tech powers and biotic powers should each have their own timers. I.e. two separate timers. Bionic powers should not be dependent on the tech powers, because each is using its own "power source".

You should take a look at Scarecrow's proposal thread - I rather liked his idea for replacing cooldowns.

I could see - maybe - biotic, tech, and combat being on seperate cooldown periods.

But biotics definitely need to stay on a global cooldown.

It's already a widely known that people prefer Tech & Biotic to be seperated. Doesn't make sense gameplay wise, in fact, some things never made sense when I stared to play ME1 again.

And... I also think ammo should not be a power at all. You switch ammo and that shouldn't drain any power, nor should it involve any skill. Why should there be ammo skills if weapon skills don't exist anymore in ME2. That always puzzled me. That would also take care of the prerequisition nonsense. Why should I learn to set my targets on fire before I can freeze them?

in ME any skill had its own cooldown and I think it should be this way again

on the global cooldown, no idea if it was introduced in warhammer online, but there is (or was) a global cooldown at it is the greatest crap (in early beta there was no cooldown at the game way more fun to play). whatever, there is no logical reason behind a global cooldown and gameplay-wise its all about balance. lets say all skills, or at least the 3 categries, would have its own timer, then the game would be even easier.

I personally hate that if I use push... that I have to wait for a total recharge before I can use warp. I the first game, each power had a cool down time and I could pretty much just throw out all my powers at once if I so desired... and I think that it made sense. In ME2... the universal cooldown really annoyed. Because as a vanguard, I would charge and then end up being in close combat and just waiting to load more powers, but gun I was using would run out of ammo before the recharge took place, thus I was open and trying to reload... stupid! It makes more sense for each power to have an individual recharge time.

The global cooldown time is a good thing. It means you're always in the action using abilities instead of spamming them all and then hiding behind cover till the cooldown finishes. So it makes combat more fun and active. It also makes balancing easier since it's difficult to balance encounters around a character that is absolute death incarnate for 5 seconds and then a puppy dog for the next however long their cooldowns are.

If Scarecrow's thread doesn't already discuss this topic, you can also post in the ME3 Wishlist Sticky thread at the top of the forum. Thank you.

End of line.
