My sound in Mass Effect has issues. During conversations, for instance, I will generally hear the backround noises overpowering people's voices and it is very hard to hear. During battles, the guns' noises will be incredibly loud, too. I will post my specs but I dont know how, can anyone tell me a way to figure it out? Thanks!
Sound problems?

Delete BioEngine.ini in \\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Config. Launch Mass Effect via masseffect.exe, don't touch configuration utility anymore! That should fix it.
If not - after above open BioEngine.ini and find the line "[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]", change "MaxChannels" to 64 and "TotalAvailableChannels" to 62, if they aren't already.
Still no luck ? You should change your sound card then.

I had exactly the same problem and for me it was enough to change the sound setting from hardware to software, but not in game, but by entering "configuration" through the launcher.

His sound card may properly support hardware sound(changing from software to hardware sound in-game or in configuration utility doesn't work, they're broken), by deleting BioEngine.ini and launching the game via masseffect.exe he'll know for sure. If his card doesn't support hardware audio, software mode will be activated anyway.

I have the exact same issue. The ambient sound is way too loud and very annoying sounding. I guess I'll try the first solution. Hope it doesn't screw anything else up lol.

I didn't see a BioEngine.ini file, but saw a text file called bioengine. I deleted that and tried, still had the prob. I then went to restore the file, and it acted as if the file was still in the folder, so not sure what's up with that.
Any other solutions? Sound is too annoying. Damn, wish they'd just give me a ambient volume control.

You probably have a realtek audio chipset on your motherboard. The following helps a lot.
1. Set sound to Software
2. Open up "bioengine.ini". Should be located at "C:\\Documents and Settings\\<user>\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Config"
(note to previous poster -- every time you launch ME, a new bioengine.ini file is created if one is not found, e.g. if you delete it before launching ME. Also, it sounds like your windows folder options are set to hide file extensions (.ini) for known file types, which is why you didn't find bioengine.ini in the first place, only "bioengine". When you deleted bioengine and restarted ME, a new bioengine.ini was created, which is why windows said the file already existed. If you knew this already, my apologies
3. Locate the tag "[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]" and change these values:
MaxChannels=64 (default for my system was 28)
TotalAvailableChannels=62 (default was also 28)
4. Save ini file and play game.
Cheers!

Haha, yeah, i had lots of problems with the sound. It even kept disappearing, especially in Flux in Citadel.

Thanks, that helps a little, now it takes about a hour before the sound goes wacky, instead of 30 minutes

I had the same problem for the 360. I have a feeling that my sound system was the culprit.

I only started getting the sound problems, after I installed the ME1 patch 1.02 version. Now my Background noise is much louder than the voices, especially the gun noises. Tried the solution above, now the sound plays around, between fine and loud. :-(
