Anyhow, he turned out to be a pretty good build. At the start of the game I pumped up DEX a little more than strength, and he wore medium armor for a good while until I got his DEX up to 36 where he could max out the DW trees. After he got 36 DEX I started pumping up strength, and the whole game I'd drop the occasional points into CON and WIL for endurance and stamina, etc. As his strength increased he eventually moved into massive armor. Talent wise I would award him two or three DW talents for every sword and board talent, but I kept them both going instead of concentrating solely on one.
In combat, I would choose the abilities which best suited the situation. For large mobs of enemies he would go DW and wreak havoc with momentum, sweep, etc. When something like an ogre would show up he would unsling his shield, turn on shield wall, and be immune from knockdowns.
Sometimes I'd have him rush an emmisary or mage with his shield for the quick knockdown or stun, then switch to DW and momentum to carve him up fast with sword and axe.
The hardest thing was to resist the impulse to just stick with DW (which I think is a more powerful mode) all the time.
Anyway, it was a really rewarding playthrough and out of all my characters this is one of the ones I'm most looking forward to importing to Awakenings and continuing with. In fact, he may be the first. Gear wise he got to use two or three good weapons AND a shield sporting that awesome Grey Warden griffon (or Cousland heraldry depending on which point in the game I was at, and whether he was trying to be 'covert' prior to the Landsmeet in Denerim...)
Ive done a partial playthrough with a dwarf fighter using 2H and sword and shield, but that one wasn't as much fun. It was easier though because both trees are STR dependent. I know some people like 2H but I've found it to be the weakest of all the combat styles.
Anyone else tried a build like this? How'd ya like it?
