I've restarted due to major fsckups with my research upgrades, and I'm wondering what Assault Rifle I should use. The Collector Assault Rifle is more accurate (there's no accuracy reduction when moving or during sustained fire), but the Avenger has a larger clip and more reserve ammo. Which weapon would serve me better until I get the Revenant?
Out of the two I'd probably say the Avenger is more flexible, my experience with th Collector rifle is that it shoots too slowly to justify it's relatively meager damage per shot.
That said, why don't you just switch to the Vindicator when you get it? It's easily powerful enough to tide you over until the Rev comes on the scene.

Total damage for ALL the ammo
Avenger - 4752
Collector - 5254.8
Total Damage per clip
Avenger - 432
Collector - 487.2
Total time it takes to empty a clip
Avenger - 2.82 seconds
Collector - 3.36 seconds
Total DPS to empty a clip only
Avenger - 153
Collector - 145
Total DPS to empty a clip + reload
Avenger - 100
Collector - 100
Note also that Collector is MUCH more consistent than Avenger; its second only to the Vindicator in terms of zoomed recoil and accuracy. You can full auto the Collector much better than any other AR other than the Vindicator.
For me, Collector edges out the Avenger because of its accuracy.
That said, if your twitch skills are halfway decent, then the Vindicator should be your weapon of choice.

I don't like the Vindicator. I may give it another try, but every time I've tried it on the Shutter portion of Garrus' recruitment mission, it runs out of ammo and I have to switch to my pistol or shotgun.

As far as I'm aware, the Collector gets the benefit of all the upgrades. However, I'm on the 360, so I have no way to check.
Check the name, does it change?
For example Claymore (I know, not an AR, but still good example) goes from M-300 to X-300e when fully upgraded.

I'm sure they still get full benefit from upgrades. Only those that has M- designations get a name change; the GPR and the Collector do not change names because it isn't M- class weapons.
ah, thanks for the info

Juggling back and forth between the Vindicator and Mantis is superior to both, though, and makes for a more varied experience.

I can't think of many situations where the Vindicator is a poorer choice then the Avanger or Collector. Any time that the Avenger's/Collector's rate of fire actually helps at short range is also a time when your Eviscerator is a better choice altogether. You've only gotta stick it out until the Collector Ship, which is exactly 11 missions from the start

Of course, the Assault Rifle Penetration upgrade I've got may also be working in my favor.

I just gave the Vindicator a serious try. I like it. It made the Archangel mission a lot easier.

To all intents an purposes, any kind of situation you use the hand cannon in, the Vindicator will do it better. It's extremely well suited for the Archangel mission, as the need for accuracy and stopping power is pretty damn high in the tunnels and the sniper roost.
But frankly I picked it up and didn't stop using it until I got my hands on the Revenant. It's a damn good rifle.

That's what I'm finding. It takes some getting used to after the full-auto Assault Rifles, but it's making things a lot easier.
Ironically it teaches you some good habits for using the Rev. After so long bursting fire, picking up the Rev you'll be pre-conditioned to use it effectively

I enjoy experiencing the different weapon styles in a given playthrough though, because once you pick up the Revenant, the experience kind of becomes "The Revenant Show".

I really think the one should give the Geth Pulse Rifle a twirl. Its doesn't stand out in any particular area save for ROF, but I think it just a fun rifle to use. It can fill the battlefield with rounds like the firestorm, has a respectable clip sizem and does give some flexibility for spray-n-pray. All around, it is a fun weapon to use.

However, I give my squad members with sniper rifles Collector Rifles, those with Subs/shotties the Vindicator. I personally use the Geth Pulse Rifle.
