I'd like to get a new laptop for playing DAO on and have been looking
at an Alienware M17x, however i have heard that there can be lagging on
some laptops and computers along with insane load times.

Does anyone of you guys play this game on the HIGHEST settings
(textures, graphics ect) which their machine runs perfectly?? or can
anyone recommend a laptop/computer that they know runs this game
without a flaw????

it just seems such a shame to have this awesome game and not be able to see the full extent of the graphics details :(

Thanks =]

On a laptop screen you probably wouldn't like the highest resolution anyway -- the interface will get kind of small.

I'm saving for an I7 and ATI 5970 setup. It's taking me blinking ages I'd like to see my games maxed out. All new hardware will be out by the time I can afford my upgrade. :D

your problem is "laptop" anyone can build a desktop that can run the game at max, and it won't cost you much either. finding a laptop that does it will be expensive, and inefficent. you can't build your own laptop so you suffer from the manufactors choices and you can rarely upgrade anything.

keep a laptop for work/travel related tasks (which allow it to be smaller and have longer battery time) but have a gaming rig at home.

QFT.

I have a desktop that a computer smart friend helped me put together--  it's primarily designed for 3D modeling and animation, but as a possibly dangerous side effect, it runs games terrifically.  6 gig RAM, dual core processor, NVIDIA GTX 285 video card (a bit of a compromise, I wanted a Quadros.  But the GTX was pricey enough).  All told, with a bit of shopping around and getting a couple of components used, it set me back about 1200, including dual monitors.  If you already have some parts (monitor, keyboard, case), you could probably do it for less than that.

I doubt you could have similar performance on a laptop for less than 3000.  And you'll still be looking at a bitty little screen.

CID-78, how much is "won't cost you much", by your calculations? curious, since that's what I'm looking into now.

I can max it out on an i5 and a 4870.

And Alienwares are overpriced.

I build my rig by following (more or less) an Alienware blue print -- I get their rig's specs, but I brought and build the unit myself -- That is one way to save same money, but still have a very nice system.

Well I have a laptop with a19 inch screen so I can run it at 1980 res and Medium settings (no AA). Acer Aspire 8930g T9400 Dual Core (2.53ghz). But I also have a Dell Gen 5 where I can run it a much higher settings - looks great on both.

i have friends that have killer laptops for parties and such, but i've always preferred the desktop, signle-player world (i can go "AFK" anytime)...
For the prices of a killer laptop, you can probably purchase 3 mid-range PCs that would blow your mind with their gaming prowess.  Go here for suggestions and build info
www.tomshardware.com/reviews/system-Builder-Gaming-PC,2509.html
Toms hardware built a decent Gaming PC for 700 US  and a screamer for 1200 US back in December, which mean that for 1000 US you can get a PC that no "laptop" will be able to touch. (laptops have severe cooling problems, and thus cannot (and do not) run the same processors or video graphics)...
But still... for $2500 - 3000 US you can still get a new laptop that is about as good as my current 2 yeard old $1000PC... but i think i'll still have a larger monitor...

Alienware is the only known reliable source of laptop gaming(that is totally customizeable), they got an m11x ranging in the 600-800$ range, unless you want the m15x with i7(I think they bot have i7's, you need to check the site), ranging in the 1000-1500?$

Depend on where you live and what you already got. if you can reuse component from your old desktop things becomes cheaper. and you only need to focus on motherboard, CPU, RAM, Power supply and graphiccard.

And don't by the latest stuff it will be expensive and it will drop in price fast, look for last years best, they will be good enough and be price worthy. it better to upgrade a extra time then buying latest stuff. because new stuff cost 2-3 times the amount, so you get several computers for that in the long run,

make sure you buy a good motherboard with plenty of room for future upgrades. that usually means that you should go Tower. if you keep doing this your average computer expenses each year will be somewhere between 100-200$ for keeping your gaming rig at maximum on the latest games.

when pick CPU check the cache size, it's more important then GHz

My Sager 9260 runs it flawlessly at the highest settings. This is with only one of the Nvidia 9800M video cards running. But I cannot call this 14 pound boat anchor a laptop. More a Destop Replacement. And it's cost was quite high.

Sagers are reliable, usually cheaper than Alienware {The M15X is actually a good buy price-wise}.

The thing about laptops is, they don't handle heat very well. I've never met anyone who had a laptop that survived past 1-2 years. even the ones that pretend to be 'gaming' laptops can't handle it. A tech-savvy friend of mine told me that it's the way all the components are crammed together to make it more laptop-y and small. Desktops'll last forever, though, and you can swap out the bits when they fail or become redundant. Plus, they're cheaper.

get desktop, laptops overheat easily, and sometimes, could damage the laptop, if you're not careful, you better get a good cooling pad for the laptop, if thats the route you taking, anyway I have 4 gb of ram and a Nvida 8600 graphics card, I usually play in medium for graphics, and it still looks amazing, that said, I think the game is well designed for PC, or maybe its the graphics card lol

I should say that mine is a £500 Medion PC purchased from Aldi. :OD

Quad Core, 4Gb ram, nice decent graphics card, good disk access.

Bargain.

Mark you; my Tosh Satellite laptop - won't run it AT ALL not even on the lowest possible setting. However it's more than happy with the W40K DOW games...

Yup, I do and it's pretty great. Characters have such nice pores and everything. :P Runs without problems, too.

As many people above me adviced already, don't buy a laptop, buy a desktop. You'll come out cheaper and with a better machine. I bought mine by parts and a friend assembled them afterwards, so unless you are looking for specific numbers, I can't help you with a recommandation.

If a laptop fits your lifestyle, then go for it. Laptop gaming is something I've looked into myself, as my current situation makes it awkward to get a full-sized rig.

I have the LG R580U, which plays DA well enough. Cost about $1000CAD in late 2009.
http://www.lge.com/c...0-U.APC3BA9.jsp

The numbers:
Core2 Duo P8700 2.53 GHz
4 GB RAM
GeForce 130M 1 GB
3DMark06 score: 5840
DAO on max settings at 1366x768, 4x AA: 13-20fps in outdoor areas, 20-30fps in indoor areas. Interestingly, cutscenes jump to over 120fps even though they seem to be rendered in real time.

Matrix of Nvidia notebook GPUs:

Notebook GPUs tend to be covered rather minimally by the big PC hardware sites. One place that is quite comprehensive in rating them is notebookcheck.net.

Ranked GPUs:

How well different GPUs play various popular games (DA not on the list):

Thanks =]

it really comes down to the graphics card. i play the game maxed out, and it's completely due to my graphics card. when i first got the game i had no graphics card except the crappy one it comes with. i had to play on low settings then. my slightly above average laptop played on all medium settings. i think any desktop computer you buy new these days can run da on all high if you get at least a decent graphics card. with everything maxed i'm in the 35-45 fps range.

If you have the momney to buy a dell...sorry I mean an alienware machine...

Then follow my advice carefully...

Either build something yourself for half the money and rent an escort for the night....or buy a car....or go on a bender....or buy anything really with the cash you will have left over :)
