I just bought Mass Effect1 CD, and today I want to install to my PC. But I always got a error after I input my CD key. I have tried to use Windows XP compability and use admin account  to open setup.exe file. But Ithe install process was always canceled.

You have very strange issue because I have Win 7 as well and I didint encounter such problems like you. Have you tried disabling your firewall and antivirus for the installation time ?

Strangely I was able to install ME1 under Windows 7 as well but I am getting the same error when I try to install Bring Down the Sky DLC. Perhaps there is something that causes a glitch in the Windows 7 installs occassionally?

Funny. After installing ME1 on my Win 7 machine I can play it now with no DVD in the drive. How cool is that. There is no DRM check and no problems so far.

There is DRM, but if all goes smoothly you don't have to notice it phoning home the first time you play.

Be aware you do have limited activations with ME1. Should you be ready to uninstall it / ready to remove your whole OS at some point, you'll want to google up the EA Deauthentication software to get your activation back.

Okay, here's the details:

Mass Effect (PC version)
Processor: Intel i7 X980 CPU (6 core, 3.33GHz) 6 Gig of RAM
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 (1.5 Gig of VRAM, Driver version 8.17.12.6299)
Sound Adapter: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Driver version 6.10.0.209)
Operating System: Windows 7 (Using an Administrator account)
Direct X Version: DX 11 (DX 9.0c also loaded)
Program was downloaded from GameStop.  Attempting to install it results in a warning as soon as InstallShield starts. The window has the yellow warning symbol, but no text explaining the error.  Deleting and downloading again had no better result.   Attempting to use compatibility mode alterations (for Windows XP) or troubleshooting to fix compatibility issues has no results.
I have loaded other software which used InstallShield with no problems.

Hi, I'm running into problems installing Mass Effect from my DVD drive, windows 7 64 bit. I had an older laptop, also running windows 7 64 bit, and I got ME1 to install there, but now I can't seem to install on my new laptop. I've tried compatibility mode, run as administrator, but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

What is it saying/doing? and what is your specs? Simply saying it will not install still leaves a huge area to the imagination.

Standard disclaimer, no laptop is truly supported, but most new ones can run the game without cooking themselves if they are decent enough.

Sorry, should have gone into more details, was just too annoyed. Anyway, my original laptop which ran it fine, was a i5-460M, with a GT320M graphics card, win 7 pro. My new machine is a i5-2430M, with a GT520M card, win7 pro. When I install, it gets to the registration key, which I enter, then it flashes the EULA page, then it comes up with Setup has been cancelled. I've tried everything I can think of in terms of running it in compatibility mode. I've looked online, and some other people have had this same problem, but couldn't find any solutions. I hope there is a fix - want to run through ME1 and 2 before 3 comes out.

Are you running the installer in admin mode?

Yes, right clicked and set it to run in administrator mode. I saw a suggestion that it might be my antivirus program causing the problems. Could that be the case?

Its possible, but unlikely. Give it a try anyway.
At work at the moment, so once I get home, will post a manual insall procedure for you to try.

Much appreciated. Going to try removing antivirus and installing, see if that helps. Will let you know.

You will need:
1) access to the contents of the data directory (either off CD, download, temp files, etc)
2) WinRar or 7zip or any tool that can extract .rar files.

Steps:
1) Create a folder on your system somewhere. Default for the installer is "C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\" or a games folder.
2) Open each .rar file in the utility chosen (WinRar for e.g.)
3) Extract each .rar file into this folder. If you are using an English build, you won't need to extract any .rar file that has a different language code (_es, _fr, _de, _it, etc)
4) After extracting all files, your folder should look like this:
...\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\
...\\Mass Effect\\BioGame\\
...\\Mass Effect\\data\\
...\\Mass Effect\\docs\\
...\\Mass Effect\\Engine\\
...\\Mass Effect\\MassEffectLauncher.exe

5) Run the MassEffectLauncher.exe and quit immediately.
6) Run the "Mass Effect ™_code.exe" from the data folder. Enter your CD Key, click next, it will exit out.
7) Run the Launcher again, hit "Config". under the "Repair" tab, you can re-create your shortcuts if running XP. If running Vista, I'm sorry, you can't add the game to the Game Explorer in these instructions. (You may need to download and install the 1.02 patch at this point)
9) Quit back to the launcher.
10) Play! (everything should work nicely now)

Ok, I've tried to follow your commands twice, but no luck. I extract the files, run the launcher, enter the code. I then try run the config, but it crashes as soon as it starts. I've tried setting compatibility for the launcher and config program, with no luck. Any other ideas?

Edit: I installed the patch and the config program works. the game doesn't work though, it crashes just after getting to the opening "press any key" screen. Also, can I move the folder I created though, as it's on my desktop?

Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can get ME working? Need to play through it again before ME3 as I lost my save games.

Have you got the latest DirectX 9 drivers? Sometimes they install improperly, which causes a game to crash sooner or later. I had my game once crahs every twenty minutes or so, then clean installed the drivers completely and violá, worked like a charm.

OK, I give up. I've tried everything here with no avail. I just don't understand why it worked on my previous Win 7 laptop, but is not working on my new one. I'm half tempted to buy it again on Steam, just so I can get a working copy. Grrr.

That GT 320m isn't classed as an "Optimus", like the 325, is it?  A huge percentage of the Optimus solutions are showing up with faulty firmware that simply fails to properly over-ride the Intel video chips properly, and it doesn't seem that nVIDIA cares to fix the problem, or even admit it exists.

My new laptop has the GT520M, which has a big Optimus sticker. However, I'm playing a lot of other, more recent games with my laptop without hassle, so it must be handling the change from Intel onboard to the Gt520M without problem. Any other ideas?

1) Check to see if you have any DVD optimization programs running and if so disable them, then see if a reinstall of the game works if you had them.
2) It may not be switching, simply because it may run the other games off the Intel GS instead of switching and not have an issue with them. ME and ME2 both are real picky about Intel Graphic Solutions and which drivers are used by them, ie some people get some Intel GS to work with an older driver.
3) Move to a real computer designed to game??!!?? lol

No dvd optimisation programs. I've set the GT520M as my default display adapter. And still no luck - it loads the game, past the titles, and then crashes after showing "press any key" And as much as I'd like to get a proper gaming PC, I'm stuck with this for the moment. So do I give up, and just get it on Steam? There's the worry that even if I do that it, won't work.
