So I'm gonna be at Virmire soon enough and I want Ashley to die. Even though I learned to like her somewhat after hating her from the first second I saw her, I still prefer all my other squad members. So... how do I need to make sure she's the one that dies? Do I choose her for the start of the mission or is there an option for it later?

There is an option for her to die near the end of the level.

it is an unavoidale event, so there is no chance that you will miss it.

There's an option for it later. Bassicly, both are attacked simultaniousl, and you get to choose between Ashley and Kaidan at that point. The first choice in the mission (Who should go with the salarians?) only determines where those two squadmates are when bad stuff happens.

Even though I learned to like her somewhat after hating her from the
first second I saw her, I still prefer all my other squad members.

I didn't really like her too, but eventually she became my favorite squad member. Save Virmire untill last, give her a shot ^_^.

Ok, so I just choose her at the start, I save the other and she dies, right?

Really, what I'm wondering is if I HAVE to take her at the start of the mission or not.

No, you don't have to take her along. It doesn't change anything.

No matter how you play Virmire, you will be forced to choose Kaiden or Ashley. There's nothing you have to do to make it happen, and nothing you can do to avoid it.

GhostMatter, if you do not take Ashley along and instead choose Kaiden, Ashley will be tasked with something else. As both parties are separated, you will have to choose to save either Ashley or stay and help Kaiden.

If you choose Ashley at the beginning, then Kaiden will go elsewhere and you have to then abandon Ashley to save him.

As mentioned earlier, this is an unavoidable and obvious choice. If you don't like her, she will die. Although if you're a male Shep, hers is the best paramour experience :)

Aaaah I see. Thanks. So at a certain point, even if I don't have them in my team, I choose Kaidan or Ashley.

Exactly. The initial choice you have to make as you're starting the mission only only determines where they each will be when the second, and vastly more important choice comes up.

Actually, when you have to make that choice, they both aren't in  your team. One person is making sure that the place you are gets blown to dust, while the other leads the diversion effort.

Actually, I think GhostMatter was asking whether or not it mattered if Ashley or Kaidan were selected as part of the team at the beginning of the Virmire mission. The answer to that is no. You could have selected Wrex and Liara for example and still had to choose between Ashley and Kaidan later on.

That was it. Thanks. I thought others like Wrex or Tali could also die like this.

Slightly off-topic, but when I replayed ME:1 in preparation for ME:2 I found a particularly nasty glitch - the game refused to let Kaiden survive. After choosing to leave Ashley behind, the door leading to Saren continually denied Shepard access to the next room (in fact, the door wasn't even turned on, as it didn't glow green like most doors would).

Suffice to say, I ended up having to replay the mission. Twice.

That does not matter.

There will be a critical point where you must decide and it is rather obvious.  Neither choice is bad.  Just pick the person  you want to SAVE and the other will die...Ashley/Kaiden.  It's obvious and easy.  Do not worry, unless you are making dinner at the same time as you are playing, you won't choose incorrectly.
