Just installed the end user runtimes. In a first test I repeatedly cast the glyph combo (since that spell from time to time produced the crash). So far so good, everything went smooth. I'll let you know the result after having played some more.

Surango identified and then fixed the stealing bug with a mod?!?!?!  And helping people crashing to desktop.
Props Surango!

Maybe bioware should offer u a job as a bug squasher. This game has made 200M dollars, surely they can scrape together 100k or so for a good bug squasher....

I wouldn't mind the 100k, but I'd kill everyone on the planet if I had to sit at a desk all day. :innocent:

Curiosity has me do some strange things. I picked up DA:A yesterday and have begun to play through origins with her. I restarted because somehow I didn't notice the mage had bright purple eyebrows. (I know, I know, how vain) Anyway, I had gotten all the way up to the warden's chest in thje wilds in one sitting with no crashes or lag before I noticed her eyes. My mods: Interesting boss drops, more things (hair, tints, eyes), and stealing fix. All previously mentioned DLC as well. Using a retail version of the game.

Have just got back into this game after getting distracted playing so many other games( 2 many 2 name ), was happily playing through game no problem this morning, no crashes, thinking I might end up getting expansion DA:A, when I decided to quit game and watch a bit of TV, when I loaded game back up noticed banner for new patch, thought to myself I better download new patch. Wish I read the forums first on patch issues, trying boss battle but keeps crashing half way through, so my choice is now to wait for EA/Bioware to get off there backsides and fix the patch, or unistall game and reinstall all DLC and patch up to 1.02 only, or go back to one of my other "2 many" games. So well done EA/Bioware on a superb patch and I feel sorry for all those ppl who went out and bought DA:A and cant even play it.

Does the patch notes really reflect the entire contents of the patch?

....

As one of the people who have to constantly quicksave after every battle and before every dialogue just in case of a random crash and then load and play a different character for a while when I do encounter a crash (as they always reproduce at the same moments) I am somewhat disappointed :(

@ Surango

Just played through RtO without any single crash! It seems the DirectX end user runtimes are really making the difference here, many thanks for pointing me in that direction!

Good. Out of curiosity is your game a retail version or a digital version?

Retail version, patched up to 1.03 but didn't install DA:A yet (waiting until after my current playthrough)

I waited to install DA:A instead of installing the 1.03 patch and I have not noticed any differance in game play than before except the stealing bug......NO LAG, NO CRASHES.......... Seems to me Surango may be on to something here concerning Direct X being the culprit not the patch itself. Just MHO.

Well through all the people posting in so many threads it's hard to get a handle on what is causing the issues specifically. But from what I'm seeing so far the ones having the most problems are Steam users. Most of them are claiming nothing works for them. I'm on a retail version as well.

To this end, I'm wondering if some files got corrupted on Steam's servers. Since the retail versions of the game are working, this seems pretty likely. How about you D2D users? I'm not really sure what companies do this outside the states, so if a nonUS digital version is still crashing after trying them please also post what country you're from and who the provider is. If you know whether they are a subsidiary of a US company or not, even better.

I do find it odd how the game's website doesn't have a link to the runtimes in the troubleshooting/FAQ section. Never seen a game with a link to them on their website, ever. Casual computer users don't know about things like this. To be perfectly honest, I forgot to install them myself until someone mentioned them in another thread. (new computer)

So, to BW/EA: If you want to save yourselves a lot of grief and angry customers, post a link to the DirectX 9c end user runtimes manual installer (not the web installer) on your website under random crash troubleshooting or something similar. Post clear instructions on how to install it as there are none on Microsoft's website. Instructions are already on this thread- copy and paste them if it pleases you.

Surango,

Using a digital version of DA:O from Gamersgate. The game was solid through my first playthrough. I loaded the patch on my second playthrough (about 2/3 complete). When I tried to load from a pre-patch quicksave it ctd immediately and every time. I then loaded from a pre-patch autosave and the game proceeded fairly stable. After quicksaving and autosaving post-patch I was not able to repeat the ctd during loading a save. I did experience two more ctd and one hangup during a "loading" screen, but that was over about another 20 hours of play. I observed on one ctd that it was during a quick succession of spell castings from my mage.

While not as stable as 1.02, the game is playable with only the occasional ctd. I am using WindowsXP with current service packs and DirectX 9c.

Hope this helps with the troubleshooting!

That answers that too, even XP users are having issues. Does DX update automatically or do you have to find the new versions yourself? The last update for the runtimes was in February so I'm guessing the full version got one too.

On a side note: the dog item find scripts have been posted on my project. social.bioware.com/project/2335/

Looking at my DirectX files I see that "Direct3d.dll" thru "DirectX.dll" have been updated on 2/22/2010. All my other files in the DirectX diagnostic tool show 2008 or older. I also noted that on 2/22/2010 was the same day I installed Mass Effect 2, so I am thinking that ME2 updated my DirectX files.

I am curious as to what race/class folks are having issues with. I personally played with a Dwarf rogue at first with 1.03 and the game CTD'd an insane amount of times (both with DAO and DAA) F5 was my saviour having to literally save at the start of each scene for CTD's :S Since completeing the game I started a new character, a Elven Mage and haven't crashed once and I am on the final quest. I wonder if certain character combinations are just borked!

I have the retail version of the game, but I also have all the official mods.

Hmmm... I'm no admin, but you might want to beat Ortan Thaig before being able to reach the Dead Trenches. Defeat the Corrupted Spider Queen, find Branka's journal and head to the northern exit.

@ Edge

Those would most likely be your end user runtimes. Out of curiosity, have you tried a clean install then patch to 1.03?

Someone was saying stopping DA from sending a lot of information (profile updates and screen shots) was helping them. I usually keep those off anyway, so I don't know if it'll work.

The only other problem I have experienced besides the "stealing bug" is that the chest mod I have installed is not showing up in camp. Can you tell me what to do to fix this Surango?

Lots of mods are "breaking" in 1.03.  Only ones that do not appear affected are ones that do not alter core code such as lock bash. You'll just have to wait for the author to update the mod. You should disable it for the time being. You may lose some loot, but it's better than losing the whole game.

If folks that use the mod Advanced Tactics haven't noticed, it can put you in a position where you cannot advance (this is one of the possible causes of the invisible wall bug).
