I definitely do not think that animals are anywhere near the level of people.  I think that Geth are far closer to people than animals are, and I still do not think Geth are people.

As much as I disagree with OP's opinion, he never professed his love for X deity or Y messiah. He merely stated that his benchmark was the presence of a soul.

As a necessary part to defend his view, he must present objective evidence that supports the idea of a soul.
