She goes from being the "damsel in distress" to a ruthless information broker who is willing to murder those that get in her way. Her assistant misleads her so she kills her. Nice. She goes from being an astute scholar, researcher and scientist to some kind of commando fighting her way to dead Shepard only to turn him over to Cerberus. At least I'm not that surprised by Ashely or Kaiden, they are consistant. Liara isn't.
The assistant she killed was hardly innocent. Liara's going up against some bad people and it's changed her. I think it could be rather interesting (if handled well).
I do still hope that the comic book series helps explain Liara's prediciment in ME2.
The fact is that there was nothing more to say about some maiden Asari who just romanced someone for the first time. The fact that she recovers Shepard's body gives her a new and a very interesting background. A necessary background to keep her interesting.
I at first though she just became like her filthy mother (maybe because of the horrific acted (IMO) "have you faced an asari comando before?" line), but when she "breaks" and talks about how she risked her life to take your body to Cerberus, that's rather sweet.
Then I found her more interesting than in ME1, and there was room to develop her character for ME3, so it's just better and better.
But anyway, I romanced her because I could and because Ash was an *ss for me. My canon shepard waits for Tali, and considers Liara a close friend.

Very creative and original....you get a cookie.
Ok, I lied, that was incredibly unoriginal and the creativity meter has tanked. Thanks for trying though.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing where the writers take Liara's character after all that's gone down with the SB and Cerberus. I'm just worried they won't give Liara's character development the attention it deserves, and Liara will get another craptastic cameo in ME3.

But, really, Why so surprised about how ME1 LI were written in ME2 and why so frightened about how they will develop her in ME3?
Devs said long before ME2 came out that ME1 LI would only have cameos to make sure they lived in ME3 so they could be there without any problem and taking some interesting role. Specially Liara: she clearly won't be "just a Cameo" on ME3. Almost sure squaddie (though I like Samara more, but I don't think we are forced to have only one Asari in there) and probably plot related with all SB theme in there.
Don't know how are Kaidan or Ashley be done, though.

Needs more Zotoh Zhaan, less wide-eyed-schoolgirl-turned-ruthless-crimeboss.
This post is full of truth. Although I must admit i've seen a bit of Zhaan in Samara (albeit a more violent Zhaan).
I don't mind Liara, but I'm not a big fan either. There is something about her character I just find so... bland? I can't quite explain it. I did love her recruitment mission if you go to pick her up quite late on and she thinks you are a hallucination however, she should do humour more often.

I wasn't surprised by the cameo in ME2 but was disappointed in how it was handled (from Shepard's end). Shepard's very passive during the whole thing.
About ME3: I know the devs said that they wanted to save Liara/Ash/Kaidan for ME3 in order to give them some important role, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Someone comes and makes a thread, bringing up many valid flaws a specific character has, and tries to voice the opinion that they feel that specific character doesn't feel very well done, and rather then try to debate productively, you troll his post, call him names, and insinuate he's gay?
Wooooow, this is a new low for maturity on the Bioware forums.
I have to agree somewhat with the OP, Liara as a character is lacking in many regards, in ME1, she has no solid purpose other then just to be there to help Shepard sift through memories, her actually character development was lacking in many regards, her only thing was that she was naive, but thats not enough to build a full character off of, really, her only special thing was that she is blue, and can romance both genders.
In ME2, they didn't just change her voice actor, they changed her entire personality, which didn't make me like her more, it made me think they realized they messed up in the first game while building her, and where now trying to change her to be more interesting, which is not what your supposed to do when a character is lacking depth, rather you should add more to the character.
We know almost nothing of Liara other then she is naive, and likes to research things, meanwhile we know almost every little thing about Kaiden and his past, we know all about Ashley, her love of god and poetry, and her shame over what happened to her family, we know more about JACOB then we do about Liara.
