I was just thinking about how ME flowed into ME2 with companions, I enjoyed the fact that we got Legion as an option as his character is very interesting. Especially considering I was destroying every Geth I saw in ME1. It made me actually have to consider whether I wanted to keep him or sell him.
Could it be possible that our squad will have a surviving "true" Protheon?
Similar to how the Geth had 2 factions, the original and the heretics. Its possible that the Protheons could have survived the destruction of their race(and modification to their current known state). They could be rebuilding in some far off area hidden from the rest of the galaxy. Waiting for their time to get revenge on the Reapers. When they see Shepard and his giant balls of steel(I dont know how the fit into his tight combat suit) they will totally help out.
Their knowledge on the Reapers could be the turning point in the war against them. Having prior information on Reaver tactics and movements could be invaluable.
Having some pissed off Protheons on your side for the final battle along with other possible allies would be epic, no one would hate the the Reapers more than them.
I was also thinking about Liara's role in ME3. She will become the new "Shadow Broker", which would make her an excellent ally as information is power. I think her recources on information could even out do TIM's, she practically knew everything about you when you see her on Illium.
Wrex as far as I can see will unite the Krogan to help with the assault. A Krogan army would be awesome...
Ashley has that stick too far up her ass to be of any use in ME3. Same goes for Kaiden.
Tali will help convince the Quarians to help, she is a princess and a hero of her people. The only dilemma I can see is the Geth/Quarian conflict. It might be possible you need to pick one or the other.
We have not encountered any Turian warships/crew/soldiers yet so I wonder what will happen with them, considering they are part of the Citadel races I think they will be in the war by default. Well, thats if you can convince that ****** Turian councellor that Reapers actually do exist.
Mordin has ties with Salarian special forces, maybe he can get them to help. Maybe a new Genophage(Or Virus) but for Reapers? I really can't see us beating them with "Who has bigger guns" tactics.
Anyway, thats just some ideas I had. Feel free to disprove or make up your own speculations.

I agree with you 100% that Legion was an awesome character who really made you step back and ponder your stance on the Geth. Call me naive, but I was clueless going in that you would end up with a geth squadmate lol.
Ah yes, "Protheans"... the species that ruled a pan-galactic empire 50,000 years ago and were destroyed by the Reapers. We have dismissed that claim. Haha I'm sure we'll hear more about them in ME3, but rest assured the Protheans are no more. Vigil's monologue on Ilos makes it quite clear that only a dozen or so survived in the research station, and that all other Protheans in the galaxy bit it, and hard.
Definitely need to disagree with you about Ashley/Kaiden. Its been said that 'cheating' in ME2 will have serious consequences, so I feel like they have to have a pretty major part in the story for any consequences to be serious.
As far as Wrex, turians, Quarians, Liara, etc... I'm pretty sure ME3 will be at least in part a 'gathering of allies' type thing. All the groundwork is in place, with former teammates in positions of power and the amount of background we've been given on different factions (and the conflicts therein). Its too bad we need to wait a few more years to get all the answers haha.
