Okay so I have played through as a rogue (DW) and a mage (my favorite), and now I want to try a warrior. To me, the whole Sword and Shield thing is just archetypical, so I want to go that route.. however..

I have about zero interest in being a tank. I will have Shale along for that. I know that dual wielding (from what little snippets I have gathered) is considered a better damage option, but I am trying to go for a combination of form and function.

If I wanted to just maximize my damage with defense as a secondary concern (though definitely not lacking concern), how would I approach this?

I'm looking for which talents would be most useful, specializations, etcetra, as I find the warrior this pretty confusing.

Noting: I don't play on high difficulty levels or anything.

any replies and help would be appreciated :)

Basically just pump str, the more offensive shield talents all have str as a prerequisite, add enough dex to pick up whatever defensive shield talents you want. dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Weapon_and_Shield_Talents should help.
26 dex to pick up shield mastery is an option for the damage boost, those extra 15 points in str will be more overall damage though, at least from personal exp.

For specs I would take Berserker since the bonus dmg applies to your special moves as well. Like relhart said about dex and strength.

My mine gripe with the S&B playstyle is the lack of good activated abilities. You only get 4 and none of them are that great. The other warrior classes get much better activated powers.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it :)

Anyone else wants to chime in, feel free, but this has been very helpful.

don't use the middle line if you go dps, it's the tank line (the first stance reduce atk, the second reduce dmg, not fun with a dps ^^). I would also say go for mace or axes if possible, cause the specials use only the shield, and shields are only str based, so for the normal strikes and final blow (if you pick berserker) you better use that big pool of str (axes have 1.10 str modifier, so if you have 70 in str, it's like having 77 when striking... and maces have 1.00 str mod but the same armor penetration the daggers have, so you'll do good dmg vs enemy tanks).

Reaver in combo with berserker should be the specs, since blood frenzy + berserk are quite effective even with regular strikes.

I'm doing my 2nd total walkthrough (make alot of chars but always stop in the middle). And again a Shield warrior just cause I love them. Mine is for damage to, but also a little tanking, since I have the extra defence. So I'm just going for Dex of 26 (+ Key To the city + Dex of the Fade) = 30 dex, rest in str, little in const and a little in willpower. As armor I would recommend the Legion of The Dead armor, cause it gives you more damage + very high defence. Shield and Sword, well just choose, Im going for my Cousland shield and Sword just for the fun xD For specialisations, Beserker for the damage, and Reaver (personal choose) for the healing and for some cool extra damaging (can kill a group of enemies with only Taunt, Healing and a Reaver skill that gives spirit damage to every1 nearby)

While it can be argued that the middle tree reduces dps, it also increase survivability by a huge amount, and also the last talent gives shieldwall complete immunity to knockbacks. When fighting foes that really matter, not being knocked back will provide a huge dps gain compared to you flying all over the place

It'd be better if you have Awakening, since you can get additional offensive SnS talents like Juggernaut, and have access to Spirit Warrior for extra damage. That being said, I am just going to warn you that you are going to have tough times with SnS offensive build, because you are not contributing enough damage to the party, and you aren't tanking.

I've played through 3 S&B warriors. I always pick Champion. I've tried Reaver, Templar and Berserker - although I didn't like Reaver so I scrapped it. It depends on playstyle more than anything really. The only thing I recommend on any playthrough with a S&B isn't your choice but a mage buff choice: Haste is your friend.

For your concept: Berserker/Templar (Champion has good synergy with Shale tho')

If you go Templar - you're more likely to chase down mages or Smite them. As your level goes up mages become harder to CC. So Wynne/Morrigan can't CC them as effectively unless you build up the Mana Clash tree. Even then, they'll be lagging behind you when you travel so the opposing mage would likely have the first shot.

I highly recommend bringing any Warrior with Taunt as backup if you plan on running down the mage as a Templar. Since Shale is there, you've got that covered.

You'd still need to have taunt as a backup yourself. Apart from that? Activated abilities galore to knock down/kill/stun opponents. You probably will only have berserk and Blood Thirst from Warden's Keep as sustained. Rally if you go champion. You'll still have a lot of stamina to cycle through your Activated stuff.

Even then.... You'll have too many talent points running around depending on your end level. A lot of these will be "waste" until you get Awakenings and the other offense options there - including the skill reset.

Get Rally to maximize your damage, since it stacks. Also, bring a Bard Rogue to get Song of Courage and like the above poster said, Haste. Having a weapon sustainable is not bad either. Having the Mage throw Death Hexes around would also be a huge improvement.

If u have the points for it, go down 2 different styles, like, DW or 2h and the sword and board tree, just switch to the style u need for the current battle, it might not be the best method, but combined with mage support spells as well as the specs suggested in previous posts, u'll be able to do fine, at the very least, bring alot of healing pots!

As here are some fighters with shield, may I ask

... anyone here found a solution against the "grapping" from Dragons and the mother ?
Many times my char only survived because of my healers ...

even at the endfight in Awakening I needed once the help of one of my healers.

Do I have too few strength, so that Dragons or Mother could hold me too long or what is the reason ?
At the moment my char has everything at 85% protection (also spell) !
How to counter that attack ?

Second question:
Also that children always "knockback" my char, even I am using everytime "Shield Wall" ... okay that couldn't really hurt me, but it is shameful that this beasts are always sitting on me :-)

Here my stats (WHITOUT CHEATING) and only official Modules and DLC

social.bioware.com/playerprofile.php

Any ideas ?

Thank you !

And one tip for the OP : spend 6 talents for Archery ... I start, if possible, every fight with a critical crossbow hit for my opponent ... best until now around 1500 damage :-) fight over before it starts !

For the grabbing/overwhelm, there are only 2 solutions, stun(or knockback) and paralysis (or sleep, freeze), these effects make the mob release the guy. Shield bash, dirty fighting, paralysis (spell or poison), sleep, war cry, dog howl etc... are always handy when fighting big mobs. (by the way, this is a loading screen tip).

As for children knockback, it's the same category as grab, overwhelm or ogre charge, so you can't do anything about that.

Indeed, just any stun effect will release a grabbed/overwhelmed character, just watch out with CoC, since the grabbed char wll undoubly be hit also.

BTW, u had problems at the mother???? she's easy as hell! (then again i'm an mage AW/BM/Battlemage, so i'm way better then any warrior hehe.)
