It's been awhile since I played Oblivion, but there are a lot of great mods out there depending on what you want to do with modding, some people want to vastly change the experience, some just want to make existing elements look and feel a bit nicer, in any case, it's never a bad start to pick up one of Qarl's texture packs:

Looks nice. I am on a pretty old rig. I've kept it upgraded but with a 7 year old mobo theres only so much you can do. So I'll check that texture pack out after I see how it handles.
For just starting I am looking for stuff that adds to whats there but not any major conversions. If that makes any sense.
I am looking thru Elder Scrolls Nexus also.

Another I would recomend is Midas Magic as it adds a heap of new spell effects and whatnot from encasing your enemies in ice to rideable magic carpets.
Damnit now youve made me want to pick up the game again
I would suggest you look up Oblivion Mods on Youtube and have a look for yourself, that is probably the best way to get an idea of what mods are out there and which ones are good.
I will post some more mods as I think of them, I have so many mods it is so hard to pick out just a few

I've had Oblivion sitting around collecting dust for a couple years (I am odd that way. It could be a movie/book/game/other I really want to check out but I am easily sidetracked) and I have heard a lot about mods and how they make it a much better experiance.
So I am asking for some recommendations.
I, personally, don't like adding mods to Oblivion. It's too easy to mess it all up and leave yourself with a buggier version of an already bugged game. A lot of armor/weapon mods you get can be damn powerful, too, so they could probably unbalance the game for you.

You need TONS of mods to make that game even remotely enjoyable and listing all of them would result in a Wall of Text unlike any you've seen before.
I have been playing vanilla since release and I still think it's an awesome game.

I've played mostly vanilla during all my time in Oblivion and there's enough to do without ruining the game with mods. There's probably some texture/graphics mods that are really worth getting (is it Oblivion Enhanced or something? One of those scenery mods is really worth it apparently) but generally they're something I'd recommend avoiding.
I don't even mod Fallout 3...

There are a lot better mods than the ones shown here but this should give you a good idea of what to expect.

That's only really true is you indiscriminately add random mods. I think you'd have a hard tiem finding a mod in the top 20 that was buggy or unbalanced and some of them can add a lot more variety and polish to the game. That's not to say that vanilla Oblivion is bad, but you still are really missing out on getting the best experience possible without mods.

I won't disagree that some of the ones out there are outstanding but when I was playing Oblivion the top mods either didn't appeal to me or broke the game further. Even the Unofficial Oblivion Patch (which is/was supposed to be great) caused issues for me.
Maybe I'll try again one day, but if you're doing your first Oblivion playthrough then mods should be forsaken.

Giving my female character a penis, anime hair style and then a cleavage revealing piece of armor really isn't what I'm after with mods.
And you don't have to do any of that stuff with mods. Ren's hair mods can be a bit much sometimes, but they also offer a lot more choices in terms of conservative styles as well. He also released some for DA and now my male characters can have sensible looking but longer than neck length hair. I'd count that as an improvement. You can also get the buildings to light up, which adds more ambience, more spell effects for greater visual variety, a larger selection of arms and armor (properly balanced too, depending on which pack you choose) a whole slew of graphical improvements, the list goes on.

For the most part that's fair, though if I could have, I would have loaded up some texture packs the first time through, they really make the game look better. As for problems with the mods, these can happen with less tested mods, and I could even see them happening in the Unofficial Patch, as that changes many things, and the more things you change, the more problems can arise, Oblivion itself is not bug-free, but I think the patch for most people fixes more than it breaks. You may have had an installation issue, there are more managers out there that will allow you to simply drag and drop archives into them for proper installation into the game, or simply open certain files to have them automatically installed, might be worth looking into.
Bethsoft titles are great because they're huge and allow for lots of exploration, but they can be buggy, empty, and occasionally lacking in polish. I see the modders as a necessary element to the enjoyment of the game, they complete what Bethsoft left unfinished because they had to create such a huge world.

I suspect the problems with the mods are mostly my fault, yes, but it still doesn't change my viewpoint that really Oblivion is fine without them (for the first play at least). Unless you've had a lot of experience with mods, it can be hard to tell which are good and which are bad, and then work out (if you get a problem) what the problem is.
I actually had Ren's hair mods, or at least a selection of them, and I think some of his DA ones are in "More Hairstyles" (or, at least, they look like them) and truth be told I don't like them. As you probably worked out I dislike mods that don't fit with the theme of the game - Anime characters for Fallout 3, Oriental-inspired hairstyles for Dragon Age and so forth - and maybe if they were in what I perceive to be the correct setting then I'd like them more, but as they stand? Nah.
Will probably give using mods another go one day, I suspect.

You know, decent armor that makes sense (Dalish Armor FTL) and all that. It'd keep me busy.
