And KOTOR vs KOTOR2 can't / shouldn't be used as comparisons. KOTOR2 wasn't made by Bioware, it was made by Obsidian Studios.

I think ME 2 can't match the epicness of ME 1's overall plot, but it's still fantastic. The level of writing for characters and individual missions is still pretty much the same (great).
However, ME 2's combat is more enjoyable than ME 1's, IMO. There may be some things to get used to, but you'll end up loving it, more likely than not.

Okay seriously I like both games for different reasons. Sadly tech and biotics need a revamp in ME3 as gunning down your enemy is the best way to kill regardless of class. Hardcore and insanity make this atrociously obvious.

I'd probably go with:
ME2 != ME1
Even though both are in the same ME trilogy.
ME2 != ME1

agreed.
If you lean towards liking shooters you won't be disappointed (well maybe) with ME2.

I seem to be the one person who prefers the combat system in 1. Lightly press against cover to enter, lightly pull away to exit and because of the crouch you didn't have to expose yourself to enemy fire the moment you exited low cover.
Compare that to a system where one button makes you run, enter cover and if not careful vault over it. Add in the fact that Shepard now stands up the minute cover it exited, makes a worse system to me. Also lightly brush against any flat surface while running and Shepard slams against it like a limpet, no matter who might be shooting at you.
The power and weapon wheels remain pretty much as they were.
Then of course there is the total removal of anything that could be described as an Inventory. Rather than fix the problem with the one in Mass Effect 1, which could have been solved with a 'Convert All to Omni-Gel' button, Bioware chose to replace it with a simple screen where you pick between weapons, which have no stats, and you needn't even bother with it as the game updates the guns for you.
Shepard now is far more customisable in the armour stakes, with new pieces able to be bought. Sadly these don't seem to make a great deal of difference beyond the cosmetic. You also don't get to give any armour to your squad, for them you get the wide choice of two, not that different, colour schemes.
The story also feels far more disjointed than it did in the first game. You no longer have the sense of urgency that Saren and his Geth presented, instead you have an enemy that you rarely see or get to interact with.
Also missing is the sense of freedom. locations now look far prettier but there is no scope for exploration as you are funneled from A to B in a series of set-piece battles.
As mentioned the game looks a lot better and the facial animation is much improved.
The crew is as interesting as in the first game but the loading times between decks of the Normandy and the all to often "can we talk later Shepard, I've things to do," will actually put you off visting them. This is a real shame as when they do talk the conversations are near perfect.
The interupts add an extra dimension to conversations and can actually leave you torn at time whether to pick them or not.
Now don't get me wrong Mass Effect 2 is by no means a bad game but I thought you'd appreciate an opinion from someone who doesn't find it a vast improvement over the first.

But if you liked ME1, You will like ME2. If you like it mostly for the story that is.

ME2 is still a great game, even if I prefer the original. ME2 does to a lot of stuff better, even if it does a lot of stuff worse (or simply doesn't do it at all) too.

If you like Mass Effect then you’ll probably like Mass Effect 2.
There are a lot of changes between the two games. Some good, some bad depending on who you ask. The big thing you’ll notice is a graphic upgrade so if you liked the ME graphics your jaw will hit the floor when you play ME2. I will warn you if you play on the X-Box 360 the controls are changed here and there especially in the mission menu. You have no idea how many times I’ve almost loaded up a game while trying to save it because of they are now on opposites sides of the menu in ME2.
Using your KOTOR comparison each game was made by a different company and I agree that both games were good you could go from KOTOR 1 into KOTOR 2 rather flawlessly with just a glance of the guide on how to play. However, Mass Effect 2 feels like it was made by another company because of all the changes.
Is it worth getting? If you love the story of the first game then yes getting Mass Effect 2 is a must and an experience you shouldn’t miss. If in doubt then see if you can rent it before you commit to buying it. Even with all my issues about the game it is still a good game one I will continue to play for a little bit more, its just not as good as it should have been.
By the way to avoid any and all spoilers you should avoid these fourums and other sites like the plague.

The inventory, ammo, armor, weapons and other loot lost in ME2 I couldn't care less about. Actually I wish Bioware would remake ME1 with ME2 features.
The combat was also better in ME2 IMO although it had some issues.
What I missed most about ME1 was the freedom and it's rebellious nature. ME2 forces me to serve Cerebus ..... all roleplay ends there. It was still fun but not as a RPG for me.
The best part of ME1 was getting to stick it to the Alliance and council and striking out on your own, master of your own destiny. I felt it and never wanted it to end.
ME2 didn't even come close, the ship ever felt like it was your ship and I never really felt like the real captain even though Bioware did put some effort to try to make me feel like one in ME2. It was Cerebus's ship with Cerebus's spyware and Cerebus's crew. I hated being the Elusive mans lackey even with the paltry renegade aspect related to him. Bioware could have saved the day if Shep had a direct conflict with the Elusive Man 1/2 way through the game and Shep was given the choice to eliminate him. I was his lackey right to the end.
Didn't want to roleplay this game
