The story also feels far more disjointed than it did in the first game. You no longer have the sense of urgency that Saren and his Geth presented, instead you have an enemy that you rarely see or get to interact with.
I have to call you out here. Saren and the geth created ZERO sense of urgency. There were no penalties or reprocussions for taking your sweet ass time. ME2 creates that. ME1 simply didn't even come close.
I agree the Collectors are rarely seen but that's sort of the whole schtick with them anyways.
True there were no game penalties for taking your sweet time in 1 but then again neither are there in 2 as you can leave the trigger mission for as long as you want.
Also its the implied sense of urgency you get from the first game, for me at any rate, there is always the thought that Saren and the Geth are up to something and scheming in the background. Then of course there are those times you get to interact with Saren which give you a real insight into his thoughts and motivations.
Slip into game 2 and the Collectors might as well have been sitting down and having a cup of tea for all the urgency they presented. I never once had the concern that they might be up to something behind the scenes which is meant to be what they are best at.
Mass Effect 2 has great story elements but, again for me, they just don't blend well into an exciting whole.
I know I'm making Mass Effect 2 sound much worse than I actually think it is but so many, with a few exceptions, are saying that the game is great and better than the first without spending any effort to say why they hold that opinion.
