Where's the promotion?

Seriously, shouldn't we have gotten a promotion after the battle of the citadel? We were still a part of the Alliance command structure, even if just as a formality. Why weren't we promoted to Captain or something?  And what about the post-mortem promotion everyone gets when they die?  Where'd that go?

PS: If anyone is familiar with the US naval ranking system an outline would be appreciated, Wiki wasn't giving me a good answer.

Well, Shep was a Lt Commander in ME1, so it's likely he'd been promoted to Commander. As for a posthumous, remember there was already an anti-Shepard sentiment starting in places of power, so the Brass probably took the opportunity to subtly slap him in the face after he died.

Shepard didn't exactly hide his/her feelings and suspicions about the Reapers, while the council decided that the Geth had been the real threat all along. I don't know if they promoted him/her after the battle or not, but as for the posthumous promotion, I can see them not doing it, because they don't want people to think they condone Shepard's beliefs. It doesn't look very good for them to keep promoting someone who, sure, was helpful, but also apparently crazy. Besides, the Council has shown itself to be unreasonable and foolish, so why would they do something that makes sense? hah. =|

Shepard is technically no longer part of the Alliance and Spectres don't have ranks. People will call him "Commander" forever, like they call retired officers by their rank at retirement.

This has been discussed before.

Well, I don't think the Reaper story ever went public, so nobody would think he was crazy.

Yes, it is quite disappointing. But I'm still counting on the title of "Emperor of the Galaxy" in the end of ME3. But I doubt Bioware's "sophisticated" writers will grant me this very reasonable request!

This seems to be a rather minor issue at best.

Exactly. Once Shepard joined the Spectres, he was no longer an officer in the Alliance Military. Admiral Hackett even says something to this effect during one of the mission briefings in ME1.

If Shepard had still been part of the Alliance during the Battle of the Citadel, and had he been promoted afterward, he would have been promoted to the rank of Staff Commander.

All moot point though. Shepard for all intents and purposes died - for the alliance - and I don't think the alliance would take kindly to him working with a terrorist organization anyway.

Maybe Shepard had been promoter right before his assignment to the Normandy. Which means that he has to serve several yers befor the next promotion, no matter what his feats may be. Besides, when he was assigned to spectre duty, he technically left the Alliance Navy. Same story as with Anderson, if he becomes a councillor, he is not promoted to rear admiral.
