In order to even attempt to continually play this game I have to:
1. Find a stopping point
2. Save
3. Log completely out to desktop
4. Do a Rain Dance in my living room
5. Log back in
6. Pick up where I left off
7. Play for 2 more hours...rinse and repeat until I get frustrated enough to stop playing all together

I liked the rain dance part
:)

Anyone else have an Age of Conan flash back (forums & game)?

Maybe the patch is not compatible with current characters anymore? Did anyone try to start a brand new characters and test the new bugs?

I am baffled as to why Bioware is shooting themselves in the foot all the time with this game?
Did they not test this patch before putting it out? Is Quality assurrance that poor or non existent?
Who manages all of this mess anyways? If i was CEO of EA i would want to have serious words with this individual! Is the game code that convulated that it is beyond redemption...?

I work in low level IT and i know how complicated things can become sometimes but for us most of the time it is because of lack of resources and people which does not seem to be a problem at Bioware so why the poor performance on the technical side of things? Everything is there, but the fine tuning is a disaster, if this was a MMO they would have sunk already!

I could understand a few pages of complaints on tehcnical problems and not them getting back to people but having hundreds of pages on technical issues by posters and see the game still be a fan favorite is nothing short of being a miracle. Bioware can count their lucky stars so far, but one day a little game called Diablo 3 is gonna roll around and if dragon age is still in a poor state at that time and still trying to sell expansions or dlc's...guess what is going to happen! that is "IF" dragon age gets to that point...

BioWare- Go back to School

I have just started a Fundamentals of Programming class at nights to see what I can learn...

Today’s lecture had one particular slide that made me giggle and think of BioWare. Maybe THEY need to go back to school and learn the Fundamentals of Programming before they release more buggy patches!!!!

Here is the slide:

Debugging, Testing and Validating

-Ensure that the code performs as it is supposed to
            -Good selection of test data
-Test every part of the program

-Agile methodology sorts out test cases before the development even starts.

Here! Here!

I have performed a clean install and patched to v1.03 and can confirm that v1.03 introduces the pick pocketing glitch as well as performance loss. I have not however had any crashes.

I waited till i finished the playthrough I was on to download the patch 1.03 ... just in case... save games weren't compatible, then downloaded the patch and started new character. CTDs like crazy(15-30 mins or so) game basically unplayable even with a new character, for me anyways. Might work for you.

BTW:

No crashs or long load times ( i have an amd processor guess i am lucky) with 1.02a however.

Perhaps this is an OS-related problem . . . I've noticed that the people with these crashes have Vista/Windows 7 installed. Is the patch causing any problems with Windows XP?

I ask because my PC has Windows XP.

Yes. I'm on XP Home 32 bit SP3, and have the pick pocket glitch and I believe I've seen others with XP systems reporting some of the other more common issues (crashing and the stamina/mana bar glitch).

Thanks for the fast response.  I haven't installed the patch 1.03 yet and may hold off until Bioware comes up with an updated patch 1.04??  I've already pre-paid for Awakenings and will hold off installing it until the new patch comes out.

Hmmm . . . I'm wondering if installing Awakenings will also install patch 1.03?  Would this install be "cleaner" and less prone to the problems we've seen in Origins?

How can Bioware release an expansion before a patch has been distributed??  I mean, they must have packaged Awakenings months before the patch release in order to get it to store shelves by March 16.  Now, it's going to be a patching nightmare - I don't envy the programmers having to fix this mess.  Image IPB

Zy-El: I don't know if Awakenings contains the exact same 'patch' as 1.03, but I do kow that 1.03 was intended to ready people's systems for the expansion. As well, I did read a post by one of the devs (Chris Priestly, I think) that said that Awakenings will update your game to the latest patch (meaning 1.03). So if you really want to avoid this patch, I recommend holding off installing Awakenings until a new patch/fix is available.

Levi28001: I'm going to try a new character tonight. I'll post back later with results.

Everyone should list their specs and what problems they do and DONT have, so maybe can find a commonality between them. Believe it or not, people who post and dont have any problems aren't just spouting useless blather. Its why THEY have no problems that we should figure out.

My loading times are much better, only crashed twice in about 20 hours of playing time. Game lags horrifically over time and during big battles, and sometimes randomly. This was a problem present even before patch 1.03, but now its even worse. More often than not the character just stall, not following their tactics, and I haven't noticed this before the patch. Pickpocket is broken, naturally.

AMD Phenom 9550, Quad Core, 2.2ghz
6GB DDR2
Geforce 250 GTS

I haven't posted my specs because there's no need to. The crashing is horrendous after installing the new patch and is not when I roll back, it's as simple as that. The 1.02a patch has some issues that were corrected by 1.03 and still crashes the game on ocassion (can't be sure if this is code or driver related) but not on the scale of 1.03.

I feel the same way. I think it’s a total waste of time to
post our PC specs. This is such a wide spread problem that it highly doubtful
that it has anything to do with what are PC spec are. Just reading through all
of the posts and the specs that have been posted already should be enough info.
Everyone is having at lest one of the “bugs” 1.03 introduced.  And there’s no common link between what our
PC specs are. XP, Win 7, ATI, Nvidia, Intel, AMD, all are having the exact same
problems.

I’ve mentioned this before, but this is just like Gearbox
and their game Borderlands. They put out a patch so the game would run new DLC
and in that patch they messed up the graphics, the game was fine before the
patch, then after the patch the graphics where totally messed up for a LOT of
players. It was so simple to figure out. Something Gearbox did to the patch screwed
up the shadows and lighting. Yet it took them over 3 months to fix the problem.

The issue with DA:O and patch the 1.03 is exactly the same
situation. Code got messed up while coding the patch. It has nothing to do with
our PC’s. It’s Bioware’s problem. And they need to fix it.

6 days ... since original post and no reply from anyone from bioware or EA and the launcher still is telling me to download patch 1.03...

Glad to see that not only are responding, but are leaving the patch out and advertising it, pretending nothing is wrong.

Thanks Toyota ..cough Bioware sorry. Maybe you guys will release a floor mat fix.

Great post ! I also mentioned the launcher ad letting everyone know to go get 1.03! You would think that at lest Bioware would pull that until they fiure this out.
Guess they are hoping that enought owners will not notice all of the new "

Enhancements"
And go ahead and buy "

Awakening"  only to find out later there game is broken.

Oh BTW, maybe if EA/Bioware spent a little more money on R&D instead of spending god knows how much on the "Awakening" website (have you guys seen this?) I think our game would be fixed by now. Just a thought.

Funniest thing happened.  I downloaded 1.03 because I saw that they found some fixes for the various causes behind the loading time problem.  That was good.  I loaded up my game and my main save file and found everything to be just as promised, no loading nightmares and everything still ran smoothly.  Finally beat the game and put it down, not having experienced a single problem.

Then I decided to pick it up again to play through on my female mage healer and found that the enemies I encounter are completely bugged.  They neither deal nor receive damage and some follow me while others just sit there like jackasses.  Thinking that it was an issue with current characters I decided to remake my female mage since she was only level 2.  I went through the creation menus only to discover that all of the options were missing along with my character and her portrait never showing up on the screen.  I said screw it and clicked quick play.  I found myself in what I can only assume is a testing room with 4 chests as a male human with a female elf voice and portrait, commoner's clothes and no way in or out.  My stats won't change when I assign points and seeing as this room was obviously never meant to see the light of day I said screw it again and here I am.

Bottom line: This shouldn't ever happen with a video game and if a company like Blizzard, money mongers as they are with WoW and all, can respond to errors and bugs with the speed that they do, I'm sure Bioware and EA should not have issues at least informing the public that these are known issues or maybe even *gasp* fixing this crap.

Well I'm glad I looked here before installing the patch. It's a good idea to look up community reactions before installing any patches on any games. It's not unusual for patches to introduce new bugs. Hope they fix these soon for the rest of you guys!

Just tested a new character through the Dalish Elf origin. Made a Rogue and played through until Ostagar. Pick pocketed every character possible in the Dalish camp and got the same result as before: I only received money. There were tons of  'successful stealing' messages where I got nothing. So stealing is broken for new characters as well, not just current ones.

Just a thought here, but what does it hurt to post your system specs? For one thing, look at the guy just above this post that can't even make a new character. That's not happening to everyone. Same with the crashing issues. If this is a universal problem with the patch, it would be happening to everyone (like the pick pocket problem seems to be). But it isn't. So there must be something else along with the patch that's causing some of these issues. If people would post as much system info as they can, it may help to get these problems sorted out. It may not, but it certainly can't hurt.

It's really a choice between two evils. 1.03 does improve loading times, but then there's still a memory leak cause instead of after loading 5 areas the loading times go up after 10 times now, but loading times still get worse and worse over time.
Also still have a lot of lag and a few crashes too. If this patch is to prepare for the expansion, it's laughable. I really like the game as far as content is concerned, but I am definitely not spending anymore money on dlc or expansions as long as they don't fix the memory leak. Right now I play for about 45-60 minutes and then leave the game to restart it so I can play again because of the lag and loading times which will then reset. Of course when I quit the game and restart I still have to manually restart the content loader to fix the authentication issue.

Seriously, no matter how good this game is content-wise, the horribly poor coding of this game makes it a rough game to play. So after I have persisted and finished the story line with my mage I will put this game in a corner and forget about it....unless of course they really fix this game. But I refuse to spend money on such a poorly executed RPG.

what a sh**!! I got this patch and now all my DLC apears as unauthorized. It happened before once every 4 tries, but Now it happens every time, so my game got useless. I'm treated like a thief, and i´m sick of it. That´s it, i´m sorry i pre-ordered awakening. And all of this is a shame, coz DAO is a great game.

in the redcliffe castle, after you finished the task saving corner, you'll find the door of Eamon's treasure room now is closed,so I let L to unlock it and I get 50XP.Then I downstairs, but after a while I remenber that I've forgotten to pickpocket NPCs,so I go upstairs back to the 2nd floor. There I was surprised,I saw the door closed again! And you can unlock it once again. So ,I think it is a bug that can increase your XP,not very fast, one time unlock to get 50XP,it can be done limitless times unless you won't do it.1.03 hasn't fix it yet.

Ok ok, i know i´m a pain, but i´m here again. So, the damn patch can be uninstalled? Otherwise, could anyone redirect me to the answer about how to fix the authentication issue? coz even this site is crap and difficult to navigate.

Out of curiosity... all you people who are reporting significant crash-to-desktop encounters. When do they happen? In combat or out? Do you take a specific action just prior to the crash? Like, for example, casting a spell or performing an ability or opening certain panels? I've been experiencing crashes all along (every patch version that I've played... which didn't include a completely unpatched version), maybe these are just hitting more people now?

Always when attempting to open inventory. More often when opening inventory in combat... but also fairly often immediately following cutscenes or dialogues. Is that consistent with what others are experiencing... or are your crashes in pure random circumstances?

Game ran perfect for about 80-90 hours on 1.1 and 1.2 version.. then on 1.3 i get crashes every 10-30 misn it seems. Ran flawless before this last update.. and now its crash city.. none of my other 50 games do this either..

It happens at differnt times, sometiems combat, sometimes talk, sometimes walking around.. (though seems to happen more often in Demorium or what ever its called. Still sometimes in other places to.. just more often in Denrium).

The bugs I have so far encountered are:

1) Takes longer on startup to authenticate my DLC.

2) Pickpocketing broken

3) Shales Stone Barrage broken

4) CTD during fights when I use: Grenades, Holy Smite or when Casting certain mage spells.

5) Mabari Warhound fetching items is broken in some places, where it says he has found something but you recieve nothing.

My PC is running:

Vista Home Premium 64-bit

AMD Phenom X3 2.81 GHz

4 GB RAM

1GB GeForce 9800 GT

That's exactly why you should post your specs. If it has anything to do at all with some sort of system configuration, your information could be invaluable.

Quite right, I did re-think my position after posting. My specs, for what it's worth.

Core 2 Quad Q6600 at stock speeds

Nvidia GTX260, changed out for an 8800GT after the former broke and had to be shipped  off for repairs. The GTX 260 ran on 186 variant drivers and the 8800GT is running the new drivers, both combinations did nothing to remedy this issue. To my knowledge only one of these is factory overclocked.

Creative X-fi Gamer with the latest drivers

All motherboard chipset/RAID drivers up-to-date

500gb RAID 0 set up

I too have had crashes all along, but nothing on this scale. I can at least make a couple of hours before the game needs restarting anyway due to slow down issues. The problem may just have exagerrated them as you say.

I also ecountered some bugs:

1. Exterme slowdown during cutscenes
2. Pickpocketing broken
3. Game crashes sometimes during combat
4. When I kill the thugs before Lothering i can only tell the templar to drive them off.
4. Shale Texture Problem after Coronation (although i'm not sure it's related to the patch and that only happens with 1 Character)

I'm using:
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7 920
8 GB RAM
512 MB Radeon 4850

Edit:
Not sure if it's important but the bugs appear with characters I created before and after the patch.

I never had the crashing issue at all ever scenes I installed the patch, but I do have one problem and I dont know if anyone has the same problem like mine but here goes. After i installed the patch I was already playing a elf rouge so i continued that and I finished it today so I decided to make another character and the problem starts here I was able to go to the character creator screen(ingame one not the one that you dl) and I can't see my character at all i press all the possible thing you can be (mage, human, dalish, etc.) and nothing so I went to go to the next part where you decide what your pc would look like and it is not showing either not even when you go to the voices it wont play it. Before you ask yes my desktop is qualify to play DAO I mean i built it so that it would play it but this is the first time i had this problem so I dont know if this because of the patch or something else if it is the patch can anyone tell me a way to fix it if not then can anyone direct me to the right place where I can find a solution for it please. Thank you very much for any help you can give me.
