I'm on a new playthrough, and I'm as far as Lothering without any crashes. Still have the stuttering visuals during larger battles, though. :/

I'm beginning to think that the large magic battles have something to do with these crashes as there are no noteworthy clashes with mages involving powerful spells until you reach the Circle Tower. I will report my findings when I get deeper into it.

Well, to address a few posts, I am not sure what the deal is. I still feel, judging by other games with crashing problems that this is a memory leak caused by a rushed, untested patch, but I have talked to four reps at EA (2 via live chat, 2 via phone), each gave me a completely different answer, and none would say anything about the patch being the problem, and acted like I was the only person with an issue. I mean, granted I got a free in game item for a game I can't play, and a $15 coupon for any game on EA's store, it still isn't that reassuring. As far as going back to 1.02a, you won't be able to play DA: Awakening, as it needs 1.03 to run. Also, the last guy I talked to at EA Tech, stated that it could very well be the 64 bit version acting up, as the game isn't listed as compatible for the 64 bit version of any Windows system. He was the one that escalated me to "Tier 3". While I know they aren't yet saying what the cause is, and are treating it as isolated incidents, I would recommend to those who have just Origins, to try to play with 1.02a (if it runs stable for you), and for those who have both DA: Origins and Awakening, well, do what ever you want, I mean if you want Origins, go with the older patch, and if you want Awakening, go with the newer one.

As far as discussing potential lawsuits, Jallard, I would recommend contacting EA, to see what they want to do to try to make it right by you before hopping on board the "Let's Sue Somebody" train. I mean, this sucks, don't get me wrong, but suing isn't quite on my mind right yet, and if it was, I doubt I would take my cause to the forums of the developers that made the game. BioWare has made some stellar games in the past, and while I am a bit pissed that I can't play my game, I do have some sort of faith that it will get worked out in the end. If it isn't handled shortly, I will contact EA again with a request for my money back (as they are the publisher and are handling tech support).

And to Surango, I am running Dragon Age: Origins, with the 1.03 patch. It is a retail box that I picked up at WalMart. I am running:Windows 7 Home 64bit, with an AMD Athlon II X3 435 Rana (2.9GHz), 4 GB of DDR3 1600, and an XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB card. I have crashes to the desktop that present at the Ostagar Top Level boss battle at the beginning of the game, and after that crashes anywhere from 5 minutes of gameplay to 2-3 hrs, depending on how much the game likes me at the given moment. It crashes iwith a nice window stating that DA has stopped responding and microsoft is looking for a solution *which it doesn't find, obviously*. It tends to do this more so in battles than anywhere else, but has happened at other times such as right after a cut scene or while panning the camera.

What irks me is that both BioWare and EA are in complete denial about all of the problems with both the patch and with the Awakening. They keep pushing for people to download the patch and purchase the Awakening. They aren't concerned about the problems, just with the potential revenue. Quality Assurance and Quality customer service always takes a back seat to generated revenue. I have yet to see anyone from either Bioware or EA come on this forum and acknowlege that there are problems with the game and that they are fixing as we speak.

I dare them to prove me wrong!

Have just got back into this game after getting distracted playing so many other games( 2 many 2 name ), was happily playing through game no problem this morning, no crashes, thinking I might end up getting expansion DA:A, when I decided to quit game and watch a bit of TV, when I loaded game back up noticed banner for new patch, thought to myself I better download new patch. Wish I read the forums first on patch issues, trying boss battle but keeps crashing half way through, so my choice is now to wait for EA/Bioware to get off there backsides and fix the patch, or unistall game and reinstall all DLC and patch up to 1.02 only, or go back to one of my other "2 many" games. So well done EA/Bioware on a superb patch and I feel sorry for all those ppl who went out and bought DA:A and cant even play it.

I admit I've been wondering why Bioware have not posted in this thread, it does seem like that they are 'not allowed too'.

I just hope that they fix the bugs (including Stealing) soon and not ruin something else in the process - I have now really started to get fed up with this kind of thing being the norm, and it does'nt seem like changing anytime some.

Time to vote with your wallet.

Such a shame, this game has become barely playable for me and judging from this thread many others. I wanted to start a brand new character before I go into Awakenings but constant crashes to desktop is ruining it. Never had one crash or problem before and I've played since release, only started happening since I started playing the game again recently but good to hear that it's most definitely this 1.03 patch that is the cause. I am running the Steam version though so it's pretty awkward to roll back to 1.02.

I was planning to buy Awakening this week but I'll have to put it on hold if these random crashes keep occuring. I never crashed once during the beginning of the game, it was only after Lothering that I started to crash big time, randomly usually in fights mostly every 5-10 mins or so.

Please fix this ASAP BioWare...

I think holding off buying Awakening is a good idea.  Me too.  They will have to fix the crashes, pickpocketing, and DLC imports before I am willing to pay and play (I understand that the later two has user mod fix but I prefer an official fix).

As for me, after DAO, I will go back to ME 2.  Now that I have seen the instability of DAO, I get to appreciate ME 2 much more.  I just hope that the new ME 2 patch doesn't break the game like 1.03 does to DAO.

Bioware is a good game developer but when EA crap take control, they reputation tarnished. EA really desperate to fill it coffer, releasing game with full of annoying bug and glitch. even patching didn't solve the problem but making it even more worse.i respect everyone in the forum helping each other to solve

the problem but we are not going anywhere if Bioware/EA don't take this matter seriously.

I do believe that the time for niceties with both EA and BioWare is over. That's why I sent this statement to EA tech support --as well as to BioWare:

QUOTE

"First and foremost, I don’t think you are going to appreciate or respond
well to this email tech support ticket; regarding Dragon Age Origin’s
DAO) 1.03 patch or the new expansion game, the Awakening.

I have
the deluxe downloaded version plus all of the add-ons and after
installing the 1.03 patch I have had nothing but problems with crashes
to the desktop. Sometimes this happens every ten to fifteen minutes of
play. Things come up missing pick pocketing doesn’t work and the cut
scenes and dialogue are off queue.

If anyone from EA or BioWare
has seen and read the forum thread regarding the bug laden patch they
will some twenty-four pages of complaints of various kinds. They will
see that we, the consumer/customer are very upset with these bus: based,
in part, on the money that we have all spent to play DAO.

To
date EA or BioWare has acknowledged these bug laden issues with the
patch—except to tell some customers that these issues are small and
isolated. In addition, EA has offered some customers an appeasement in
the form of a downloaded add-on and a $15 gift certificate –toward the
purchase of a new game.

Personally, I prefer a playable game fee
from bugs and crashes: Because that’s what I paid for.

Furthermore,
despite the recorded and apparent bugs and crashes with this new patch,
along with the new Awakening game both EA and BioWare continue to push
people into installing the patch and purchasing the Awakening. That
being said, based upon their responses to these issues both EA and
BioWare are more concerned about generating revenue than fixing the
bugs. They are in utter and complete denial: And, are refusing to
acknowledge them or fixing them.

Perhaps it is time to push
Congress into regulating software developers and publishers into selling
reliable well coded and working software. It is time that quality
assurance took a front row seat to the investors and the lobbyist.

If
I don't get a timely response to these issues I will assume that you
really don't care about the customer."

Jallard, you'd have much better luck with lawsuits. Unless it fills a politician's pockets, they don't care what your problem is. Nice representation eh? And more likely, they would pull operations in the US and deal only with the eastern hemisphere if that were to pass.

You are probably right. They have destroyed this country enough already. People have jobs, homes and the like; all because of their need for greed.

All my DLC has dissapeared... I reinstalled the game completely but it didn't help. Now the game doesnt seem to recognize my user, and even tho I've bought warden's keep and the stone prisoner they are still in the available content section, and if I click buy again it says they are installed. Return to ostagar just stops at 0% when installing, and all the collectors edition and preorder stuff (like rings and stuff) has vanished from the list. If I start a new game I'm effectively without a single piece of DLC.

Is this due to 1.03 or Awakening? I installed them at the same time.

okay i submitted a tech support questiong to EA support with link to this thread telling them that patch 1.03 is a bust also attached my dxdiag because of the long load times that still occur that the patch was suppose to fix lol. i just hope they respond with some kind of acknowlegment that 1.03 is a bust. and that they will do something to fix it no dlc hand outs and such not like you could use them anyways so its more like a smack in the face.

on dissapperaing DLC i get that sometimes usually i just close DA and load it up again and its fixed.

Just crashed to desktop immediately when I tried to use the Cleanse Area ability in Dragon Age: Awakening. It was as if clicking the icon had caused the game to crash. To to be clear: the particle effect for the ability did not appear. It was just an instant crash when I clicked on the icon.

I ascertain from this that whatever the change that was made in Patch 1.03, it is also present in Awakening and crashing it, too. :crying:

Minor spoiler:

This occured when I encountered the Genlock Emissary that breaks down the huge doors in Vigil's Keep.

Is this the only crash  you've encountered so far since installing the patch? When did you install it? If you've had it a while and only crashed once casting that ability, you're probably better off than myself and others who can't last between 5-30 minutes.

Patch 1.03 has spoiled my experience of Dragon Age, too, DeadJediJamie. Check my post history.

The game never crashed in 1.02 for me - only the long load times after a few hours' play.

I'm starting to think these crashes have something to do with the Mana Clash spell and Cleanse Area ability. The only thing that they have in common, however, is that they use the same particle effect.

When I get a chance, I'll try spamming these spells in a variety of different situations...

I doubt it is singularly linked to one or two particle effect spells. I've had crashes that required no spell casting whatsoever. My character was a warrior and simply engaging in combat/entering a new area can cause the game to come to an abrupt halt. Spell casting might exasperate the problem but with so many variables it's impossible to say for sure.

All I can say is that Bioware has got their hands full.

For all with crashes after installing patch 1.03 when not previously having that problem;

As I posted earlier, I successfully rolled-back to 1.02 (well, uninstalled/reinstalled, then re-d/l'd DLC and extracted, then reaapplied mods), now I'm reporting that I did as our favorite Moderator (and, I might point out, the ONLY one posting to this forum) suggested and did another complete install and patched STRAIGHT to 1.03.

Here's what I've experienced so far:
1. First check was the final battle using my Level-22 Mage. Encountered a CtD, but *think* it was NOT related to 1.03. I *think* there's a reproducible crash if one uses the ballista(s) excessively. I belive that if it is NOT a P-or-NP C that takes out the Archdemon, bad things happen in the game logic. The CtD occured at exactly this point at least four times in a row before I thought, "Maybe I shouldn't tell Leliana to keep twanging that big crossbow!" Once I had the PC take the last-before-the-cut-scene swipe, success!
2. Loaded another save with my Level-16 Rogue (about 3/4-way through) Don't usually pickpocket except for plot items, so not as familiar with the "correct" behavior, but can confirm it appears to be broken: I get the success message every time, get gold sometimes, get non-plot items... never! But no CtD.

3. Started brand new Warrior from scratch. Now Level-10 and have completed Lothering, Soldier's Peak, Sulcher's Pass, and Redcliffe Village/Castle. Total time this playthrough, 15 hours. Longest period at a strech, about 6 hours. So far, not a single CtD! But I am just now starting to see conversation and transition / loading lags. In fact, posting this during a save/quitbreak to see if that helps.

System Specs:

Windows 7 x64

Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad, 2.4GHz

8BG RAM

nVidia GT240, 1GB

Mods:

Equal Love (won't play without)

Polygamey

du_nohat

Improved Atmosphere

Practical Female Dalish Armor

Skip_the_Fade (new this playthrough... haven't got there yet!)

Anyway, thought I'd let folk know what I've learned with a fresh load patched with 1.03 only.

[Addon to immediately preceding post]

Almost forgot:

For this new playthrough with 1.03, I unchecked "Autosave", since that seemed to be the point in the action that was causing my most frequent CtD. May re-enable later if all else seems stable.

I updated to the 1.03 at the worst possible time. I'm fighting the archdaemon. That's right... the very last battle in the whole game. And now, it keeps crashing by every time the daemon is down to about 25% health. This is not good. not good at all.

I feel your pain.  I just completed the game with quite a few crashes at the final battle.  The hardest thing about the final battle turned out to be the patch 1.03 crash.  Irony eh?
